Will listening to dark ambient fuck me up?
>>
I've become a much better person after listening to Coil. Embrace dark ambient, OP, and be saved.

pls post some dark ambient essentials, will judge
>>
>>54521519
This, Coil is very helpful and thought provoking music.

Raime - Quarter Turns Over A Living Line
Lustmord - Metavoid

This is my first time on /mu/, what's the opinion on dark ambient? I mean is it popular and discussed?
>>
whats in that picture

Not excessively popular, but it is discussed from time to time.

I wish it was discussed more, it's one of my favorite genres, despite the fact that it is exceedingly easy to make.

This shit is creepy as fuck but I can't stop listening

i don't care if it's entry-level as fuck

If you guys want some entry level dark ambient try this:

Not too creepy but still kinda spooky. And it's more "musical" than most other dark ambient stuff
>>
Lustmord, Kelly Bailey

have fun
>>
>>54521778
Yes, exactly.

Fuck that though. I want to use tape loops, drone guitar, various other instruments and record acoustic songs on top of the backing ambient stuff.

Maybe make something like Spiral Insana with more interesting music.

Atrium Carceri, probably the most basic or? First thing that comes out when I search dark ambient on yt.

Try Raime, that album I listed below Excavation. It's in a similar style.

I've found /mu/ in general to be a more useful board when it comes to recommendations than /tv/. The people here are more knowledgeable about stuff. On /tv/ only the most mainstream Hollywood capeshit gets over 20 posts and the rest is just trolling/waifushit.
>>
>>54522071
Yep. The craziest music genres have the nicest listeners.
/noise/, for example, is filled with normal dudes with whom you can actually discuss music without being called a hipster/cuck/faggot/whatever
>>
>>54521735
It's easy to make bad music in any genre
Good dark ambient is as difficult to make as any other genre
>>
>>54522206
>/noise/, for example, is filled with normal dudes with whom you can actually discuss music without being called a hipster/cuck/faggot/whatever

Welp, I like /noise/ threads as well, so yes.

>>54522237
I guess so, anything good requires a certain degree of skill and artistic creativity to make.
>>
That guy from Upstream Color made me want to record some dark ambient of my own with distorted field recordings.
>>
>>54521487
>hurr I want to listen to music with dark, disturbed and austere imagery in order to hone a completely inauthentic online persona

cue the neofolk kids on last.fm

I'm not saying everyone who listens to noise/etc. does this, but there's far too many of them on /mu/
>>
Never listened to anything like this before but I just heard The Haxan Cloak self-titled and damn, I kinda like this shit. Nice and spoopy but still enjoyable somehow
>>
Why is there such a large overlap between dark ambient and black metal?
>>
I really like Stalker but I'm not sure where to go after that. Any suggestions for dark ambient with subtle spoken word or other sounds? Also I've listened to Haxan Cloak and enjoyed that, but I really like the subtle field recordings in Stalker.

>>
Every album tagged as dark ambient that I've ever heard has either been aggressively cheesy or just pretty cheesy and really boring. As an alternative to dark ambient I would recommend Miseri Lares by Valerio Tricoli or other musique concrete albums.

>>54522715

This. I don't tell most people I listen to Nine Inch Nails, let alone this.

>>
>>54522604
A lot of BM artists have dark ambient projects of their own or would have projects which initially started out as BM turn into dark ambient along the way(Burzum being the most prominent example). Naturally a part of their audience would follow them into those waters.
Same as the black metal/noise crossover(Ash Pool/Prurient, Ames Sanglantes/Akitsa, Grunt/Clandestine Blaze etc.).
>>
I'd recommend Deathprod and Svarte Greiner
>>
>>54522647

Atrium Carceri uses a lot of speech samples. Check out his album Kapnobatai.

This is a great first dark ambient album; it covers both the relaxing sides and the sinister inner-workings of the genre.

I don't know very many teens who listen to any form of ambient.
>>
>>54523825

>>
>>54523742
Just looked it up and apparently, Lustmord released his debut in 1981 together with Nocturnal Emissions. Also, TG has proto-dark ambient elements in their albums, like "After Cease to Exist" and "Beachy Head", among others.

Eno released this in 1982, so he probably didn't invent it. Even with ambient itself, bands like Tangerine Dream were experimenting at the same years. He merely gave it a name and gave us some essentials
>>
Anbody know of some good ambient that is dark and bleak, but not scary/horror/disturbed? Perfect example of what Im looking for is the second half of Bowie's "Heroes." Specifically stuff like "Sense of Doubt" and "Neukoln." Thanks in advance.

>"We are now in a position to elucidate the mode of being of the possible. The possible is the something which the For-itself lacks in order to be itself. Consequently it is not appropriate to say that it is qua possible--unless by being we are to understand the being of an existent which "is made-to-be" in so far it is made-not-to-be, or if you prefer, the appearance at a distance of what I am. The possible does not exist as a pure representation, not even as a denied one, but as a real being of a lack and as lack, it lacks being. The Possible is not, the possible is possibilized to the exact degree that the Foritself makes itself be; the possible determines in schematic out-beyond itself. Naturally it is not at first thematically posited; it its meaning as this is apprehended in the world in the circuit of selfness. But neither is the Possible ignored or unconscious; it outlines the limits of the non-thetic self-consciousness as a non-thetic consciousness. The non-reflective consciousness (of) thirst is apprehended by means of the glass of water as desirable, without putting the Self in the centripetal position as the end of the desire. But the possible repletion appears as a non-positioned correlate of the non-thetic self-consciousness on the horizon of the glass-in-the-midst-of-the-world."

Dark ambient is made in 4 ways
A)Soundtrack to a horror movie
B)The field recording of a horror movie
C)A + B
D)Just a wierd song
And if you want to be specific:
E)A with minimalistic B
F)B With minimalistic A

Also artists usually try to fit on those themes

Average dark ambient
Themes:All kinds of themes
Artist: Lustmord
Type: A, D, C and E

Drone Ambient
Themes: Mistery, "something is going to happen but I dont know why"
Artists: Oophoi
Types:A and D
Other: Has drone music influences.

Black Ambient
Theme: Black metal themes
Types: D
Other: Has black metal influences

Death Ambient
Themes: Monsters, apocalipse
Types:B and F
Other: Here, the sounds of the stuff happening is in your face.

Deep Ambient
Themes: Caves, top of amoutain, lost somewhere
Artist:Amon
Type: B and D
Other Very minimalistic, sometimes windy stuff

Ritual Ambient
Types: All
Theme:Ritual or meditative stuff
Artists: Endvra
Other: traditional Folk influences, sometimes new age influences,....

Some guys split into more stuff, but the other stuff they name its basically the same stuff posted here (most of them would fit in average dark ambient type)
>>
>>54526860
There is also military ambient and neoclassical ambient, but I am not putting them here, because most of the time those names are wrongly used to stuff that is not dark ambient, on the case of military ambient they use it for martial industrial and on the case of neoclassical ambient most of the time they use for neoclassical darkwave.
