Jazz fucking sucks anon, everyone who actually likes music is laughing at you right now for enjoying that shit. The whole genre is the definition of the word wank, literal aural masturbation with no depth whatsoever.

I like this album a lot. Where should I go from here?
>>
>>54400116
>uncultured pleb
Typical jazz fan, resorting to buzzwords and calling others "uncultured" as an argument. It's funny you say that I'm "uncultured" but your the one listening to the completely vapid noodling that is jazz; also I didn't really care for TPAB (6/10) but I can guarantee it has more depth than anything Miles Davis or Ornette Coleman or any other fucking jazz "artist" ever produced.
>>
>>54400327
not him but I like Jazz because it makes me feel good
sounds like you don't listen to music to feel good
>>
>>54400430
If I wanted to feel good I would listen to Pet Sounds, because at least it means something and conveys actual emotion instead of aimlessely noodling around for 10-20 minutes (if not longer.) Post some jazz albums that you think have some level of depth to them, and actually express those ideas in the music instead of some shitty 'concept' tacked onto the peice.
>>
>>54400130
Mellow Dream by the same artist. It's even better.

Fuck, I'd kill someone to find a reasonably priced version of Scenery and Mellow Dream on vinyl.
>>
>>54400656
why does it matter if its aimless noodling or not? if it makes you feel good it makes you feel good.
not everything has to convey emotion and depth.

Does it really matter if its top quality music or not?
>>
>>54400955
Well I can't speak for you but I don't enjoy listening to shitty music. What I was getting at in my last post was that you seem to consider jazz a high quality form of music, but only on the basis that it makes you "feel good" not that it actually has any intellectual or emotional depth; I made the comparison to Top 40 pop because it is essentially the same way, totally vapid, and I'm assuming you don't consider it to be on the same level as jazz, what exactly constitutes the difference in quality between something like Katy Perry and Thelonious Monk?
>>
>>54401269
music being shitty is subjective though
>>
>>54401416
Did you only read the first sentance of my post?

thats my favorite album anon

currently listening to non-jazz (abner jay) but last jazz album i listened to way johnny griffith - a blowin session. my local record store has a cioy of the vinyl but it's like 80 bucks :(

scenery is seriously such a great album. even my nonjazz friends love it
>>
>>54401522
it doesn't matter to me if music has intellectual or emotional depth, all that matters to me is that it sounds good to me and makes me feel good.
you don't like music that you don't consider intellectual and deep, and since that's the case don't listen to shit you think isn't intellectual and deep and don't be an autist who goes around shitting up threads and saying his opinion is fact
>>
It's a real shame when one post ruins a thread. Hide any unrelated posts :)

I've been really getting into robert glasper lately. My favorite is in my element. i can't stop listening to maiden voyage/everything in it's right place.

Was anyone else let down by black radio 2? even black radio 1 was mediocre. i'm really glad hes returning to jazz for his next album
>>
>>54401731
I never said my opinion was fact, don't put words in my mouth. I was just trying to get a good discussion going, if I hadn't been "shitting up" this thread it would be near the last page and dead. I apologize for attempting to understand your opinion and express mine on a music dsicussion board.

Damn I'm impressed that you're this anti-jazz. I read your first post and I thought you were trolling. But even if you trolling are you're making good enough points to be taken seriously.

Now go fuck yourself because jazz is my shit and the shit generally. Here's why:

1.) Musicianship:
I am one. Not professional but good enough and with enough experience that I can claim to give a damn. Jazz has some of the best musicians I've ever heard. Elvin Jones how the hell do you manage to get 100+ tones out of 5 drumheads? With creativity, a discerning ear, creativity, and excellent wrist/hand control.

Miles Davis. So. fucking. deliberate. Every note is so well weighted, he just takes his time and places his shit exactly where it needs to go. There are so few Miles Davis solos where I feel certain notes could be better off elsewhere or gone.
John Coltrane polar opposite. Loose, daring, powerful. Overplayed a little bit early in his career, this record included. Just as dynamic as Miles is versatile. You know what? Just as versatile as Miles is versatile too.

.) Ingenuity:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k94zDsJ-JMU
Here they are playing modal jazz while it was still fresh and early. Solos like these had not been heard often before (on record, I can't speak to live performances), and it only sounds a teeny bit forced. But I didn't pick this track because it's the first quintet's best, I picked it because it is exemplary. They consistently went at new shit like it's been their main bitch since way back when. Jazz at one point was just bland swing-esque dance music. Then bebop happened. Hard bop happened. Cool happened. Modal happened. The ridiculous orgy of sound called the 60s happened. Then free jazzed happened because shit, what do you do when the best have been at it for two decades strong? You say fuck it, I'm going wild.
Speaking of which: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX24Ry3HxhM

3.) Rhythm:
Good jazz is witty and light on its feet, like a good philosopher (extreme props if you pick up the reference).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h3F8GLz0q0
I put this shit on and I dance. I honestly, most of the time, could give less of a damn about melody. Don’t even bother me with lyrics. I pick something, I press play, and then I go back to what I was doing. And then I stop what I was doing and I dance, because that’s how I express my gratitude to music. Maybe it’s because I’m a drummer but I love the fact that jazz is constantly smashing together different rhythms. If you have ever earnestly enjoyed snapping along to music then you should be listening to jazz. It just gives you so much freedom and so much room to work with, that’s the whole point. It’s like 90% improvisation, which some people don’t like, but I really dig music that has so little pre-conceit and puts so high a priority on self-expression in the moment.

It's been more than hour since my last post and I don't really feel like keeping this up; as you suspected I was just fucking around, I have as much respect for Jazz as the next guy, both as a listener and a musician. I actually grew up listening to Jazz, as that was all my father listened to at the time, especially fusion and the more avant garde styles (although it was mixed together.) I don't listen to a lot of Jazz myself, but I always enjoy it when I do, my favourite Jazz album could be Sketches Of Spain but Headhunters would be a close second. Sorry if I genuinely offended anyone.

Then let's bring the share threads back.

Thelonious Monk - Misterioso (1958)
>I think one of his last great albums before the triplet from 1963. Johnny Griffin on sax kills it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuHjgKQDofs

Sun Ra - Sun Song/Jazz By Sun Ra (1956)
>Back before he was the cosmic overlord he was still one of the most creative jazz musicians around.
https://youtu.be/FuHjgKQDofs?t=57s

George Russell - Ezz-Thetics (1961)
>Not super well known but George Russell is one of jazz's intellectual pioneers. Eric Dolphy leads the way on this one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19PzDh7GEa8

Cecil Taylor - Nefertiti the Beautiful One Has Come (1962)
>Early free jazz, maybe my favorite jazz album ever. Piano trio that plays way bigger than should be possible for a three piece. Music for movers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFdWVFTNqUc

All of these are personal favs but also important albums from their discographies. 3 of the 4 should be moderately easy to find. I really wish I had upload links to give, I'll be able to do that soon.

also, I'll give OP a try
>>
>>54411716
Well, you can start with the often highly rated holy trinity

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Charles Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

and sometimes along with them but not is

Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come

Miles Davis has a second quintet that made some nifty stuff:

Miles Davis - Miles Smiles
Miles Davis - Nefertiti

John Coltrane later started doing more avant garde shit:

John Coltrane - Ascension

Miles later on became an amazing jazz fusion guy

Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew
Miles Davis - Jack Johnson

there are other cool jazz fusion albums, too

Sun Ra - Atlantis
Sun Ra - Lanquidity
Herbie Hancock - Headhunters
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Inner Mounting Flame
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats

Then there's some other, cooler, less accessible stuff

Thelonious Monk - Brilliant Corners
Ornette Coleman - Free Jazz: A collective Improvisation
Pharoah Sanders - Karma
John Zorn - Kristallnacht
Fushitsusha and Peter Brotzmann - Nothing Changes No One Can Change Anything, I Am Ever-Changing Only You Can Change Yourself
>>
>>54411955
Shit, I wasn't expecting such a good response. Thank you

>>54412022
Oh son of a bitch, I forgot jazz guitarists. Sorry bruh, I am drunk posting.

Django Reinhardt - Djangology or really any greatest hits type album he has
Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery
Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life
Guthrie Govan - Erotic Cakes

Each a different style of jazz guitar. All good.

That´s perhaps more accurate. I do know he scared every saxophone player playing with him.

i think a lot of people are turned off by the novelty aspect of roland kirk, or by the fact that a lot of his records are not all that great... that and also he wasn't really an innovative player.
in the canon of jazz, kirk is really somewhat of an insignificant player, especially when you compare him to people like joe henderson, sonny rollins, john coltrane etc
>>
>>54420862
You can make any player look insignificant when you compare them to the worshiped heroes of the jazz canon.

Doesn't say anything interesting about their art. See: players/composers like Sam Rivers.

>You can make any player look insignificant when you compare them to the worshiped heroes of the jazz canon.
you can take any comment on 4chan and turn it into an argument that you can craft in your favor

Sam Rivers was an innovative writer and player, quite different from Roland Kirk

there's a reason why the 'worshiped heroes' ARE the worshiped heroes - quite simply, they could do what others couldn't

Currently listening to a John Coltrane compilation , Trane's Blues, I bought for $3 a while ago. It's quite good, although I prefer his more avant garde stuff. I've had it for a few weeks but I bought it along with a few other cds and I guess it got overlooked.
