lets talk prog. I'm looking to get into it, big fan of king cirmson, soft machine, pink floyd (but not the wall) but can't stomach the likes rush/jethro tull/genesis. recommendations?
>>
>>54210987
Listen to Exposure by Robert Fripp if you haven't. It will show you exactly the point in which prog ends and post-rock begins. It's also very good.

I felt it got stronger toward the end, the first few tracks didn't really grab me all that much but they were nice

Toward the end I did start to feel it but then it was all over and left me wanting more. I liked it, but I agree it's not his strongest record. My favorite is probably still Insurgentes

Still, I'm pretty hype about going to see him live in May. He always puts on a great show
>>
Van Der Graaf Generator are sorta like a mix between Genesis and KC, but very unique in their own right. Give Godbluff and Pawn hearts a try.

Also try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cTp5xwAl58

Family and Music In A Doll's House specifically is great mesh of prog and psychedelic with oen of the GOAT vocalists of all time but I almost never hear them talked about.

Then try Gentle Giant. Octopus is the most accessible album.

eh, other than perfect life (absolute turd of a song, complete filler), I think the first half is a lot stronger. I haven't heard a ton of his stuff, but it seems like writing pop songs is his strong suit, not all the drawn out instrumental prog stuff. The title track is corny as hell, but it's a great fucking pop song. Real strong melody. Then you get to a song like Ancestral which is just a total snoozer start to finish.

>>
>>54213930
Different strokes for different folks I guess, because I loved Ancestral

I think his best prog stuff is in Insurgentes and Grace for Drowning. In "Raven" and this one he tried some less proggy stuff

Check out Porcupine Tree and Blackfield if you're at the very least intrigued. His other stuff is really good, in my opinion. This new album was just alright

lol the Hare's a fun little intermission. I can see how it kind of kills the momentum but the rest of the album more than makes up for it I think.

>SHOW ME A GOOD MAN AND I'LL SHOW YOU THE DOOR
>THE LAST HYMN IS SUNG AND THE DEVIL CRIES MORE
>busts into soprano sax solo

>>54213971
Blackfield's his "pop" project, right? Maybe I'll check that out. I've heard one or two Porcupine Tree albums (years ago) and remember it being a little boring and spacey for me.
>>
>>54214074
Yes correct, Blackfield is his pop project.

Which PT albums did you check out? Because their style varied and evolved quite a lot along the years. Maybe you listened to their earlier stuff, which is definitely quite spacey and stuck in vibes similar to Pink Floyd's Echoes. After the years passed they gained more experience and started being bolder imo, with records like In Absentia, Fear of a Blank Planet, and Deadwing. The Incident as well, for the grand finish into a more aggressive side of prog

I hope they come back soon
>>
>>54214128
>Which PT albums did you check out?

I honestly don't remember. It was a long time ago. I think Blank Planet might have been one though since it had just come out. I'll try the Incident since I "aggressive" sounds pretty good to me

If you have yet to listen to Yes' 'Close to the Edge', you need to. It's a fabulous album and I imagine the title track will blow you away. Jon Anderson's vocals are incredible, he has a lot of power, charisma and range with them. All the musicianship on the album is fantastic.

After that I'd recommend moving onto Fragile. I would normally recommended vise versa but because you already seem to really enjoy King Crimson then you should be able to stomach Close to the Edge no problem.

That's their best really. The most poppy band of the Canterbury scene. I admit most of their songs are mediocre, but Nine Feet Underground is great. If you like the vocals on that album but wish for more complex jazzy arrangements, again, Hatfield and the North is GOAT. Richards Sinclair's bass playing and vocals are miles ahead compared to his previous work with Caravan.
