>Pale Saints -
>>54121914
I considered putting Rites of Spring but it seems so aesthetically different if someone was starting out with emo

Hardcore (modern):
Scooter - The Fifth Chapter
Special Request - Soul Music
Suburban Base - History Of Hardcore
>>54121987
you can't have all those as your favorite genre.
>>54122041
Oh go on, please.
>>54122041
The only one that doesn't fit is Garifuna, which isn't actually a genre of music, sort of in the same way that MPB isn't a genre.
>>54122039
i guess that works too
>>54121987
>dub
>no King Tubby and Pablo Meets Rockers Uptown
>>54122058
Punta and Paranda are technically the genres but muh
>>54122083
>going for the obvious
Post-Punk
Joy Division - Closer
Mission of Burma - Vs.
The Pop Group - Y
>>54122099
>14 Dub Blackboard Jungle
>not obvious
>noise rock
The microphones- the glow pt2
Shellac- 1000 hurts
Lightning bolt- hyper magic mountain
>>54122121
True, ah well
>>54122152
The Glow isn't noise rock.
Replace it with 77 Live.
>>54122166
Haha, Rockers Uptown is a percy for me. I myself, would take it over Blackboard.
>>54122152
>noise rock
>the glow pt2
Is that what genre you'd call it? Music similar to the glow, anybody? Never found any shit quite like it.
>>54122051
what does that even mean?!!??!?
>trip hop
>Morcheeba
>no Tricky, no Massive Attack, no Portishead
I know it says "your" 3 picks but come one. You owe it to someone new to pick at least one classic.
>Post Hardcore
Fugazi-Repeater
Slint - Spiderland
Drive Like Jehu - s/t
>>54121914
i probably agree,
>>54121836
10/10, wouldn't have chose it as my favorite genre but if I did I would choose those exact three albums
>>54122368
Lo-fi indie
>>54122368
I really wouldn't call it noise rock, but I think you'd probably like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFLR-4849oc
Weird hiphop
J Dilla - Donuts
Madvillainy
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
>>54121836
>Essential doom
>No Pentagram - Relentless
>>54122434
I am.
>>54122368
Unfortunatly just anything else Phil has done. Especially those adjacent to it in his discography. Outside if honestly the closest u might get is maybe some of Karl Brau's stuff or if ur into memes ITAOTS
>>54122455
>essential Pentagram-core
Pentagram - Relentless
St Vitus - Born Too Late
Witchcraft - s/t
>>54122537
>>54122501
>or if ur into memes
I'm not not into them.
>>54121987
>downtempo
My choices
>The K&D Sessions
>Bonobo (first 3 albums)
>Lack of Afro - Press On (jazzy curveball)
>>54122396
pretty much a perfect list for starting out
Black Metal.
>Burzum - Filosofem
>Dark throne - Transylvanian Hunger
>Ulver - Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr I 5 Capitler
>>54122621
Do one for each wave, like:
>Venom - Black Metal
>Forgotten Woods - As the Wolves Gather
>Leviathan - The Tenth Sublevel of Suicide
>>54122705
True, but I think mine explores three different aesthetics present in first wave. Plus those are just the essential of the essential.
>>54122746
Yeah I see what you mean, but I think it'd sort of avoid the misconception that the 90's Norwegian scene is all black metal has to offer.
Either way, those are all great albums
>>54122811
Agreed, and likewise.
>No Wave
Various Artists - No New York
The Contortions - Buy
Swans - Filth
>>54122953
The Contortions are on No New York.
And Swans is a bit late in the game.
How about The Jerks, DNA, Lizzy Mercier?
>noise rock
Nisennenmondai - Tori-Neji
midnite cobras - caвьep
Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain
Rock
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Burzum - Filosofem
Swans - Filth
>>54123309
That's not even anything.
>>54123309
10/10 best edm chart online
HipHop
3 essentials
Illmatic
Ridin' Dirty
Doggystyle
I know this list is pleb as fuck but they really are the best introduction to hip hop from all three major regions.
>>54121818
Atmospheric Misery
> Uaral - Sounds of pain
> Bohren and der club of gore - Geisterfaust
> Skagos - Anarchic
>>54123517
>no Wu-Tang
apart from that not bad.
>Avant-garde metal
Shining - Blackjazz
Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape
Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium
>>54123635
I still think Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is way better than Unexpect.
I guess Unexpect would be a bit more entry-level, but we are talking about avant-garde metal. Anyone who wants to into it should go for something at least a little challenging first.
>>54123686
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum is way better but Unexpect is still something any newcomers should at least hear.
>>54123517
>Illmatic/36 Chambers
>Straight Outta Compton/Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
>Soul Food/Southerplayalisticadillacmuzi
My two cents on the the best intros to each region. Also enough diversity within those albums, pick and choose whichever.
>>54123623
I love wu tang but i was limited to three, and illmatic is a better introductory album for the whole east coast. If I was doing a list for exclusively east coast
Ilmatic
enter the 36
and either the low end theory, moment of truth, or Ready to Die
>>54123635
My avantgarde metal essentials would probably look like this
>gorguts - obscura
>maudlin of the well - bath
>sigh - in somniphobia
>>54123707
all great picks
>East
these were my top two picks
>West
I love both of these albums, but I feel like Doggystyle incorporates the gangsta of SOC and the g-funk movement which were both essential to the region. The Pharcyde have always felt more in tune with the whole Native Tounges movement, so I would include them in an intro to that group.
>South
honestly I'm from Houston so I'm biased towards UGK but these would both be just as good, although I'd probably pick Aquemini just because of how it brought the styles of Kast's two previous albums together and seems to be generally more cohesive as an album.
You do have good taste in hiphop though anon, I totally blanked on goodie mob
>>54123695
That makes sense, especially if they already enjoy progressive metal.
Mine would go:
maudlin of the Well - Bath / Leaving Your Body Map
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of Natural History
Portal - Outre'
I think that would cover basic, a bit more difficult, and full-blown impenetrable.
>>54121979
dont listen to him
>>54123826
Shit. I forgot about Gorguts.
Definitely replace Portal with that if you like death metal more than black metal.
post-punk:
New Order - Substance (1987)
The Chameleons - Strange Times
Wire - Chairs Missing
>>54123635
My avant garde metal would be
>Naked City - Torture Garden
>Peste Noire - Ballade cuntre
>motW - Bath
jazz noise:
one bird two bird by akita/gustafsson/o'rouke
borbetomagus by borbetomagus
stones by gustafsson/stetson
>>54124042
Hmm lets see
Acyl - Algebra
Giant squid - The ichthyologist
Callisto - Noir
>>54121818
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme/ascension
Duke Ellington - Money Jungle
Jackie McClean - let Freedom Ring
>>54124186
Post bop btw.
Alternative Rock
Pixies - Doolittle
Weezer - Buddy Holly
The Rentals - Return of The Rentals
>>54124583
Shit I meant to say "Weezer - Blue Album", I honestly have no clue why I said "Buddy Holly".
>>54123635
>No Aluk Todolo
>No Painkiller/Naked City
>No Murmuure
>No The Mausoleums
>No O.L.D.
>No Timeghoul
>No Demilich
>No Qulielfi
>>54121987
>trip hop
>Major Force West - 93-97
>Nigo - Ape Sounds
>Morcheeba - Big Calm
No Maxinquaye? I feel as if that LP is pretty much the cornerstone of trip-hop and still is a good starting point for the genre.
>>54121927
>ethereal wave
>lists shoegaze bands
Sludge Metal
>Eyehategod - Dopesick
>Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops
>Isis - Panopticon
Freak Folk
>Fire on Fire - The Orchard
>Faun Fables - Mother Twilight
>The Valerie Project - s/t
>>54123923
>implying any of these 4 aren't 8/8 greatest of all time
>post-punk
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Talking Heads - Fear of Music
Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
Pretty hard to sum up the entire genre in four albums and try to fit some of my favourites in there as well.
>>54123742
>love wu tang but i was limited to three
no excuses
>>54121979
This is fucking shockingly bad.
>Shoegaze
>My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
>My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
>My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
>>54125296
>inb4
>Tool - Ænima
>Tool - Lateralus
>Tool - 10,000 Days
Better intro prog albums, go
>>54125361
King Crimson - ITCOTCK
Can - Future Days
Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning
Bonus: Third Ear Band - s/t
>Math Rock
Don Caballero - What Burns Never Returns
Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is
>Post-Rock
Slint - Spiderland
Cul de Sac - China Gate
Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die
>Noise Rock
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me
Big Black - Atomizer
Sonic Youth - Sister
>Post-Hardcore
Fugazi - Repeater
The Jesus Lizard - Goat
Unwound - Fake Train
>>54125445
ITCOTCK i'll grant you. The others are barely prog rock at all and, although they are diverse I don't think they'd act as a good introduction.
My 2p anyhow.
NOISE
>Kjottmeisel - Gullkassett ov Doom
>Maeror Tri - Myein
>The Taj-Mahal Travellers - July 15, 1972
BONUS PICK:
>Sword Heaven - Entrance
>>54125564
>Sister
Ew
>>54121979
>not including itcotck
>>54125651
It's good tho
>>54125445
>Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning
uhh, that might be a bit much for a beginner.
>>54125697
It's ok but Daydream Nation & Confusion Is Sex are much better
>>54121836
All stoner? Shit list, friend. Shouldn't have expected anything different from /mu/ though. Get some traditional or funeral or sludge. Doom is too broad to cover with three albums anyway
>>54125583
i'd pick lizard or Larks' Tongues in Aspic before ITSCOCK
>>54121818
>drum n bass
dieselboy - substance D
dj dara - future perfect
ak1200 - shoot to kill
>>54125445
Prog is too vast to cover with just three albums. But this covers some decent ground. Though I prefer other symphonic prog albums to ITCOCK and I think The Mothers Of Invention are a better avant prog band, it still covers the styles
Dream Pop
>Beach House - Teen Dream
>Deerhunter - Halycon Digest
>Grouper - Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill
>>54125445
>Henry Cow - In Praise of Learning
i approve of this.
but tago mago might be better choice
there is nothing wrong with starting with "advanced" stuff
Prog rock
>ITCOTCK
>Close to the edge
>Thick as a brick
Jazz fusion
>Hot Rats
>Bitches Brew
>Head Hunters
>>54121979
wow
this is shit
don't get me wrong, there are other bad ones in this thread, but this is just so outrageously bad that i feel obligated to go out of my way to post about how fucking terrible it is
congrats
Black metal
>Vegas Martyrs
>Wounder
>Kristallnacht
>prog rock
Genesis - Foxtrot
Can - Tago Mago
The Mothers of Invention - Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Bonus: In The Court of the Crimson King (for your prog boy points)
Prog rock
>Brain Salad Surgery
>Discipline
>Hemispheres
How do you even find a favorite genre?
Songs I like are usually random.
>>54125945
>songs
>>54125361
>Better intro prog albums, go
Anything Rush did between '76 and '82
It's great that these prog lists have no Pink Floyd. No seriously, you guys are wrong.
Meddle would be my choice on the list.
Canterbury Scene
>Soft Machine - Third
>Caravan - In the land of grey and pink
>Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
>>54125945
kek
>>54125898
but genesis a shit
>not even yes
>>54126013
But Genesis is the best symphonic prog band. Yes is great too but Genesis is better. Sorry.
>>54125971
>>54126009
why are you laughing?
>>54125898
Weasels ripped my flesh goes more for the free jazz side and is in general really weird to be considered prog
>>54126044
I just consider it avant prog
>>54122705
>not Welcome to Hell
>>54125998
>Meddle
I'll be damned if anyone shits on One of These Days.
>>54126099
Uncle Meat is probably a better choice
>>54126153
Yeah probably, I just prefer Weasels. I still think my list was decent.
>>54125853
Both of those are spot on. Good job, anon.
Just so you know anons, I'm saving this thread and if I find any albums I don't like I'm never taking your recommendations again.
>>54126296
Thanks!
Longshot: anyone a chiptune fan? Need some essentials.
