I'll add Tom Waits

>>54012822
If you're going to include classical music, you can't include Brahms and no one else. I'd say Beethoven and Schoenberg. And Grouper, Fugazi, GY!BE, and AnCo should definitely go.
>>
>>54013203
I'm just trying to include those that have created experimental/interesting/influential music in as many realms as possible.

Actually I don't know how I missed Bach and Palestrina right next to Brahms. Still, Beethoven (or even Mozart, though I don't prefer him) and Schoenberg were much more important and succinctly demonstrate a range of tonality.
>>54013223
Which is why those should go. Replace them with Mark Hollis (synth pop, post-rock, ambient pop, singer/songwriter, pop rock), Lou Reed (shit-ton of genres, goes without saying), Ishmael Butler (entire evolution of hip-hop music can be traced through him), Colin Lloyd Tucker (post-punk, art punk, new wave, minimal wave, ambient, dream pop, Celtic music), and Jim O'Rourke (too much shit to list). It's better to use individual artists so everything they're associated with counts too. Of course, the latter three choices aren't as well-known but I think they undoubtedly deserve to be on the list.
>>
>>54013600
Fair. Just wanted to try to get a real list started. My knowledge on hip hop is weak and I didn't know who to throw in for that.
I could see pulling Brahms and putting in Beethoven and Schoenberg.
Mark Hollis, Lou Reed make sense.
Jim O'Rourke is a great pull. I've been obsessed with In Bern recently but he's done so much.
Colin Lloyd Tucker I'm not very familiar with. I'll look into Ishmael Butler.
I still feel like Ian MacKaye is worthy but I'll leave him out for now.

So how do you feel about.

Palestrina
Bach
Beethoven

I just don't think hardcore/post-hardcore is an important enough genre. Might as well add in a shoegaze band if we're including that.
Having both Steve Reich and Phillip Glass might be a little unnecessary, but I can see why you'd include both. If you have to pick one, though, my vote goes to Glass.
Anyway, it's looking a lot better. I'll let you know if I think of anyone else.

I was really confused by your list at first.

not including classical, blues or country because I dont know much about them. any recommendations?
