I mean MA and portishead are unmatched classics. Classics by the sense that the music can be enjoyed all without context and in the sense that no one else has been able to improve on them without radically stumbling into other territories. Hence my earlier comment.

If anything, trip hop was already an accumulation of remarkable styles into a very enjoyable and poppy format, so there really was nowhere to take it to, if that makes any sense.
