In my opinion his best albums are The Boatman's Call and Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus.
There are people--especially here--that prefer his earliest stuff with the Bad Seeds (or The Birthday Party) due to the more aggressive arrangements, but I don't think his songwriting was nearly as strong. I don't think he really kicked into gear until Tender Prey or The Good Son.
