I'm so apathetic guys. I'm depressed and unhappy, drugs aren't even making me happy anymore. Shot up heroin a couple times in the last week, but I know that drugs aren't the answer. I NEED an outlet to let out my emotions before I succumb to heroin addiction because I'm close to the point of completely not caring if my life spirals out of control.

How do I become less apathetic to start doing what I love? My dream is to make music, mainly for myself. I feel like it's the only path towards my own contentment. I just can't find the motivation.

Not necessarily. There are plenty of tutorials for each major DAW online both text and video. Knowing theory only helps with a few things like composing harmonies, etc which is still possible to do well if you develop and trust your ears.

What about across the country? I may have a chance to move from the east coast US to California. But I just can't see how that would help. People are the same everywhere. No one wants to be around someone like me who's just gonna bring them down. Idk why the few friends that I have left even hang out with me. Fuck, I don't even care about them really. And I'm ashamed to say I don't feel much love for my family who are nothing but loving people. What's wrong with me? Is my brain lacking a certain chemical? Do I need to be put on antidepressants to feel happy to be alive?
>>

>why is the internet a detrimental place for music
Easy to get suckered into the mentality of "I'll never get gud why even try" as well as the mentality that mixing will solve all your problems, it's ok to be crap, let me viral my soundcloud/bandcamp instead of improving my music, etc.

in the piano roll context, c5/6/7 refers to a certain octave. c0 is a very very low c (i don't think it goes into negative numbers because they would definitely be beyond the range of human hearing) i think the piano starts at a2 or a1 and goes up to c7/8

The terms "C5" and "C7", etc refer to a "C" chord (i.e. a triad with C as the root) that includes the fifth (the fifth would be included in a regular C chord anyway so it'd be uncommon to see a chord written in notation as C5) or seventh, which they will tell you is often used in jazz but is really used in many other genres of popular music.

If you have a decent microphone or even a smartphone you could try recording your own in 24-bit, but otherwise if there's a particular vintage drum machine sound you're interested in or something then Google is your friend. There are so many different resources out there that it'd be difficult to choose a single "best". If you're looking for samples from actual recorded music then use the Internet Archive as most of the recordings on there are in the public domain.

I've been trying to by messing around with FL Studio Demo.

I literally can not get past the default patterns even though I have several drum machine packs(808). I am trying to teach myself music theory but it seems like a lot to learn and the only thing I can apply it to is piano. I have no equipment and never learned how to play an instrument.

That is the main reason, but I am trying.

Should I just focus on playing the piano then moving to a DAW? Where should I go from here?
>>
>>53951237
If you can manage piano try finding a string based VST

Staccato strings are pretty easy to learn at first
>>
>>53951237
Music theory can be applied to any sound. Try making a melody out of the sound of you coughing into a microphone.

See? Now learn some theory, and you'll be able to extrapolate from the 3 notes you used that you're in the key of E minor and you can put some chords on top of that accordingly, and then learn your DAW and you'll be able to design a synth sound around that, and once you've got a few synth sounds playing at the same time you can put some effects on them and mix them, and then you have a track. Really, just listen to the artist you like and really think about how they could've done what they do. Also see the advice in >>53950330.

my grandfather and pretty much everyone i know is a musician, or in the case of my grandfather was, but i'm honestly afraid to try it because i hate failing. i tried to learn how to play guitar a few years ago from a friend and he said i was probably the fastest person to ever pick it up that he has taught and that i should keep with it, but i never did and now i forgot everything.

i want to learn how to play the violin and guitar since i have them in my closet. the violin needs new strings and a new bow though, and i just keep putting off buying them. i don't know what my real excuse is, but here i sit day after day not doing it. i'm also nowhere near social enough to be in a band, although i have been told if i learned violin and got good at it they could use me for singing at my mother's church and other places friends do stuff.

i don't know, man.

Yeah I've been there. You just have to fail, that is life. It is failure, over and over again. It's much better to be a failure, trust me I cannot make this point any stronger. All great musicians are failures, that's how they are strong enough to make music.

Every person on this goddamn thread is a bunch of winners, that's why they don't make music. If you really want it, you'll let go of it. Trust me, I was a shitty player 4 years ago, and now I'm more confident and I'm 23 and I'm going to do this for my entire life because I can't do anything else.

If you're in high school it's a great time because you can get off this forum and sit down and do your time on the instruments. Then work on getting together with others, you think "I can't do it" but you will. Have faith you already know what to do, and say.. the music comes OUT OF YOU. It is inside of you, it doesnt just come from nowhere. You will know yourself and find the music. Just play your music

My advice to all would-be composers is listen to classical music. I am pretty shite at composition but since I started regularly listening to shit that isn't just riffs and licks and hooks I have constant inspiration. I can come up with a melody on the fly now. Although they aren't all worth turning into music of course. Another thing is with a wide range of classical repertoire in your head, you'll be able to think of how to do key modulations more convincingly since pretty much every kind of key modulation crops up. This is obviously useful for linking multiple themes together.
>>
I used to play guitar in a band when I was 14 until like 16, then around 20 I slowly stopped playing guitar everyday. Always recorded small bits but never went anywhere with them or even made one complete song.

Now, as funny as it is, I've been really into playing around on the keyboard on GarageBand on my damn iphone. Don't know a damn thing about playing piano but I can come up with something I love every now and then that I'll save and record, yet I don't know what to do with them ever. I have a hard time adding things to a song or even knowing where i want to go with them. just dicking around with the different presets is calming though

>tfw recently purchased shitty synths, drum pads, and controllers off ebay
I have no idea what I doing, and I'm having a wonderful time.

No whether its 25 or 23 or that 32 year old guy. Music has no age. If you want to pick up an instrument, then go for that. It is fun, and very frustrating.. but it changes people in a good way.

However you want to do it, just keep going for it. After you don't make the sound you want in a hundred times. It will probably take many more, but the fun is in the art, not in the product

how do i make music with no money

That's what I'm saying. I just haven't gotten the hang of it yet. Where fl had little things you had to know but was smooth sailing.
>>
>>53952801
nobody cares about how you feel
>>
>>53952944
how do you even live with no money?

you need a solid life/income before you can start doing recreational stuff like making music.

I couldn't really think of what to do afterwards.

you guys use any controllers/pads/physical hardware stuff, or just the keyboard?

Tried using FL with just keyboard, gave up after a few weeks.

Are you stupid?
You need a shit life to write good lyrics. Literally no excuse other than your own stupidity.
>>
>>53949828
what headphones is he wearing here?
>>
>>53952991
a cheap USB MIDI keyboard, but that's the extent of it
>>
>>53952985
Congratulations! You have successfully created Vaporwave.

what if he had a shitty education and didn't read enough books to be able to articulate his thoughts into coherent and/or interesting lyrics?
>>

i plan on buying a midi keyboard but right now the laptop keyboard works for me

Thanks friendano

:^)

I worked hard on it.

>shitty life

could just as easily be a mundane inspirationless one than a dark past with truckloads of negative experiences to write about

Speaking of keyboards, I found this old keyboard in a dumpster outside my apartment, what could I do with it? Don't think it's even full range, only like 60 keys.

most rappers didnt make it through highschool

shit looks decent, id use it to the max
>>

for what though?
>>

hence why most rap is about weed, bitches and ho's, and the lyrics are poor.

There are some good rappers (sage francis for example) but rap isn't usually the first choice for lyrics posterchild

the sound from these things is generally not that great but i think it'd be useful for composing and planning things out before you take them to a DAW
i hate using a MIDI keyboard because there aren't enough keys on mine, but that has plenty
>>
>>53953126
man put your mind to it, i make beats so it would help me tons
>>53953127
but my point is you dont need a great edu=cation to write compelling lyrics

Pirate some software and get writing, making music on 0 dollars isn't hard.

I don't use any controllers or anything special when I write music, I've just got a nice soundcard and some good cans, I don't really need much else most of the time unless I'm recording guitar or bass or something which doesn't happen much these days.

Everything I fucking had was pirated when I did this one here as I couldn't afford any libs at the time.
>>
I write a new melody/chord progression everyday but sometimes it's problem to me to develop them (mostly a mental thing). I do have a few finished pieces and i'm really proud of one of them.

bought Sonar in steam sale for like $50
>>
>>53953168
my point is that you do.

or at least read plenty of books
>>
I want to. I pirated Ableton and Pro Tools but I feel like that's not enough because I don't own or know how to play any instruments.

My drumset broke and I'm still saving for a new one to start another band, pls don't hurt me /mu/ ;_;

>>53953314
Either you're fat as fuck, or your technique is horrible to break a fucking drumset.
