Experimental jazz comeback? Anyone else think this shit is completely amazing? Odd thing is that RYM freaking loves this band: look at jazz charts 2013/2014, they're that site's most adored jazz band right now. But they have no buzz anywhere else: no US tours, no p4k reviews, not even a Downbeat Magazine review. At least my lame website gave it enough attention for me to become a fan

nice blog post

Not a huge fan of this group. I like Gustafsson's work with the Thing more.
Fire! Orchestra is the weakest example of modern "experimental jazz". Exit isn't a bad album, but Mats has done much better, even with the original Fire!, than anything the Orchestra has done.
Enter was also an incredibly weak album that not only failed to build on what Exit did, but just sounded like a weak rehash.
Anyone not listening to BBNG for the last few years is retarded. They just came out with some new shit with Ghostface Killah, but you gotta listen to their older stuff.
You can download the first and second albums off their site for free. They're a bunch of way young white kids with style for miles.
I'd be shilling right now if it weren't free

Hell yeah, a meme albums general!

Weak how? I get that the technical abilities of most of the musicians aren't strong, but free jazz is about passion, intensity. And this band is always very very intense.

Is /mu/ not the same anymore? I remember this getting posted constantly 2013 and a general buzz about it.

What i meant was the world of jazz has no clue about this band, there are only famous on the internet basically, which is an anomaly

Yep, you're the only enlightened jazz enthusiast in this world of sheeps
>>53845216
The circles Gustafsson is known in are very small anyway. The allaboutjazz review of this album has almost 11500 views.

>I get that the technical abilities of most of the musicians aren't strong
Hahaha woah, no, most everyone involved is a great player. The weakness comes from the fact that Mats isn't the greatest composer, so all the composed parts are rather bland, and the improvised parts never really explore what the musicians are capable of. It's not awful, but the interplay between the musicians during the improvising is pretty mediocre. It's fun music, but there's not a whole lot to come back to. Plenty of other bands straddle the line between composition and improvisation much better. And have stronger interplay between the musicians.
Also, free jazz isn't only about intensity. That's a very narrow-minded view of an entire movement. Especially Fire! Orchestra, where they do know when to take a step back and not just blow their lungs out. I suppose you could make the argument that it's more of a quiet intensity, but it still doesn't apply to all of free jazz, especially in a world where the AACM exists.

at the moment they're the in house band at orionteatern in stockholm as a part of the play "det flygande barnet" (the flying child, originally written by Roland Schimmelpfenning)
one of the most intense and captivating music-related experiences of my life, if anyone who lives in stockholm reads this, please go see it. the drummer from refused is playing one of the roles!
mats gustafsson is an absolutely incredible musician and it's amazing to see him in action

That sounds great. I watched a short video interview of Gustafsson a while back, and he sounded very excited about this project (it was around the time Exit came out).
>>53845431
oh, forgot to mention one detail
mariam wallentin, who is heavily involved in fire! orchestra as a vocalist plays one of the other roles
her presence in the play is amazing as she almost constantly does some kind of vocal improv or droning melodies and has little to no dialogue. it's difficult to explain but she's basically like the fourth part of the band but on stage and her voice being her instrument
i'm honestly trying to push this play because when i saw it there were very few people in the audience. would be saddening to see such a great performance go largely unnoticed
newfags and plebs in this thread

>but free jazz is about passion, intensity
kek this is what 16 year olds think
passion and intensity is only a small part of what free jazz is about. contour, interplay, and group cohesion are all just as important as passion and intensity.
another rookie mistake is thinking that loud/aggressive = passionate/intense

I'm not sure I like this album... I like experimental music, but I don't really dig music that's annoying sounding but justifies it by being "experimental".
I really like an experimental jazz band called Atomic, they're from Sweden/Norway. Met them when they played at a bar near me, nice guys.

yes BBNG is my favourite jazz band right now. They totally abandon the notion (that i feel is isolating and killing jazz) that playing jazz is all about impressing other jazz students, and other people shouldn't "get it"

You're confusing correlation and causation kiddo
