>Spacedust - Gym and Tonic

http://www.discogs.com/artist/32922-Spacedust
Commercial dance act that took profit of the juridic void over the Thomas Bangalter record "Gym Tonic" (released by Bob Sinclar). Their single "Gym And Tonic", a recreated mash-up of Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You" and "Gym Tonic", reached #1 in the UK Singles Chart in 1998. The video for the song, despite being made in the late 1990's, was gloriously cheaply made. It is unclear as to how intentional this was. It regularly features on VH1's "Worst Videos" lists.
Another act, very similar to Spacedust, was Groovy 69.

Beginning with the cover art of the CDs, V/vm has decided to cut up covers of various Aphex Twin album cover art and to patch it together into a collage. Anyone familiar with Aphex Twin releases knows that the cover art is usually a little disconcerting but V/vm has taken it to another level with this technique. The faces are distorted and disembodied. Each cover has an amalgamation of the various covers featuring the Twin's face that have appeared on his latest releases.

The music is reminiscent of the collage technique used in the cover art. The tracks have not been remixed as much as they have been distorted through numerous filters. They are still recognizable Aphex tunes but it seems as though V/vm has run the track through Cool Edit scientific filters to distort the tracks and keep them off-balance from their original form. It also sounds as though Aphex has not given them individual tracks to work with and that the group has merely taken the original track and worked from there. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me to hear that Richard D. James had not approved of the remixes beforehand and had not heard about the releases until their release date.

The idea was interesting: remix the most sacred of all IDM stars. The execution was less than interesting and merely serves to remind the listener that they could be doing the same at home on their own personal computer, if they put their mind to it. V/vm's release Help Aphex Twin Volume 1 and 2 have a subtitle for each. Volume One's is "We don't give a shit..." Volume Two's is "...Because you don't give a fuck." It's quite obvious to me after listening to this that V/vm don't give a shit. After careful reflection I've also decided that I don't give a shit...about their future releases.

>V/Vm - The Death of Rave

The concept is simple: a requiem/celebration of a now bygone age - the rave years. How it's done? Well, take several hours/days worth of late 80s/early 90s rave tunes and mangle away at them, hacking at the beats and distorting until what remains is a pulverised, sludgey residue of noise. Slowly, the beats become atomised leaving, mostly, a sheet of noise. Ugly, ugly noise, whirling, swirling and incoherently swarming. Occasionally the noise is punctuated by some luminous interludes of serene beauty, moments of clarity amid the chaos. But soon enough there's more noise... nightmarish blaring noise cascading down like monsoon rains.

There are parallels between The Death of Rave and Kirby's work as The Caretaker: in both cases, dance music (admittedly quite different forms of dance music) are sonically mutilated until they resemble something almost ghostly. But whereas, say, Persistent Repetition of Phrases invokes sound of music reverberated around the empty floorboards of some haunted dancehall, TDoR brings to mind the flaying limbs of ghostly dancers from distant warehouse raves... their frugging bodies twitching away to beats that have dissipated long, long ago, their spirits stuck forever between the barren, empty concrete floor and the rotten, rusting corrugated iron walls.

At times, The Death of Rave resembles an endurance task... listening to the full 111 tracks on the basic release and the 94 additional tracks on will take 19 and a bit hours. It's not a pleasant listen on the whole, it's not even that enjoyable - it's brutal, it's disorientating and it's unnerving. But somehow it's also kind of entrancing. And maybe that's the point...

"The idea for 'The Death Of Rave' was conceived in early 2006 after a visit to the Berghain Club in Berlin. At the time Berghain was about to explode on the international club scene as a temple. The feeling was in the air that something special was happening. I went and saw a pale shadow of the past. Grim and boring beats, endlessly pounding to an audience who felt they were part of an experience but who lacked cohesion and energy. For me personally something had died. Be it a spirit, be it an ideal, be it an adventure in sound. Rave and techno felt dead to me.

The original 'The Death Of Rave' project was vast, over two-hundred flashbacks, using all of the dance floor hits from the time and stripping theme of energy and spirit, turning them into shadows and ghosts. The material pre-dates the recent obsession younger musicians have for re-creating remembered rave textures and memories. This was not nostalgia, It was an inverted paean to a time when the music was about bringing people together for a shared experience. A time when only the music, advancement of sound and getting on one mattered.

Of course 'The Death Of Rave' was vast, too vast to digest. It was available for free download for a number of years via the V/Vm Test label. In the end the 'The Death Of Rave' died itself when the V/Vm Test website was deleted in full in 2008. In the intervening years I have at various times re-visited the work. And so eight tracks were lifted from the project and have now been remastered by Matt Colton as a 'document from a dead past'. A monument to a lost work, an idea finally set in stone via a physical format. Proof of its existence.
[...] The track-listing is in reference to the strongest rave-memories I have from those nights. The people, the DJ's, the cars, the violence and the long lost clubs. Flashbacks only, now consigned to my own dusty experiences. "

Far East Recording 2 for me. love them dominant asian folk elements in that comp.

on a side note someone seriously needs to buy pic related and rip it and upload it to the web one of these days. it's a j-pop remix album from the mid 90s which features 4 remixes by Terada, the two remixes that have been uploaded to the web are absolutely ace
