I think the last part I reached was the second garden/school. It's been like half a year since I paused my playthrough.
A friend of mine has told me that esentially, the cold Squall becomes worried about others over time in the story. Same happens with Cloud. The great difference, being that Squall is even more edgy, and the game's story is longer. Yeah, that gives deeper character development, but VII was the game that came first.
