So i gave this a full listen after all the praise and this is really great, my prog AOTY so far, barely any weak moments despite 2 hour length.
Listen to it here

No idea what to expect from new Steven Wilson since it will sound totally different from the first 2 revealed songs. Same with Neal Morse album.
>>53493100
>Jazz Fusion
That's cutting it a bit fine. Like Miles Davis wasn't playing prog rock. He was playing jazz influenced by rock but he was no more a rock artist than Flying Lotus is a jazz artist.

I'm sure everyone's heard this already,but it's worth hearing if you haven't.
>>53493202
No
Sounds nice so far
>>53493100
Listened to this the other day and loved it
it's my first experience with the Raga Rock genre but I am definitely going to explore it more now, I love the way they blend traditional southeast asian instrumentation with krautrockish jams.

I think he means jazz fusion more in the vein of Frank Zappa's Hot Rats, but it should probably be changed to jazz rock or something
guess I'll post this here since no one really cared when I made a thread for it.

Gentle Giant is the bomb, Acquiring the taste is my favorite by them
>recent discoveries
I listened to Three Friends by Gentle Giant, very good, possibly my second favorite by them
This is pretty much a perfect album
>>53493217
I've also got this, but it's not quite as obscure,as it's featuring everybody's favorite prog drummer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRl-IIPezn4
Been listening to The Rotters Club by Hatfield and the North and let me just say, it's great. I adore their self titled, but I'm leaning toward their latter album as my favorite. Also, Yes is my favorite prog band get at me.
>>53493348
Early gentle giant is fantastic, didn't care for their debut though
>>53493394
I actually liked their debut but it's true that it sounds a little aimless
CHON - Puddle

Isn't It Quiet and Cold? is one of their best songs
>>53493443
It is for me, also very underrated
>>53493390
If yes is your favorite, you should listen to Bruford in the post above yours.

also y'all should check out the orient express for some zesty sitar-driven prog. heard about them for the first time yesterday, really cool stuff
>>53493520
If anyone is familiar with Plini, he is a solo guitarist from Australia who makes sort of CHON - like short EPs, he has a third one coming out soon.
https://plini.bandcamp.com/album/sweet-nothings
this guy's guitar gymnastics are good as fuck, songs are fun and catchy and jazzy. I think its light enough to stay in the category of prog rock and not quite pass into the category of prog metal.

no but I am enjoying it, I also enjoy those other 4 sumerican records albums they have displayed off to the right. Specially that DEP.
one of my favorites from 2013.

i've finally found prog. rock that i can enjoy, namely strawbs' from the witchhood and grave new world. i guess i like the folky sound. also the song structures don't ever get too complex for my tastes.

Le Tangerine Dream face
>>53493100
I've been jamming to this a lot lately. It's short but very good. I also bought the cassette.
https://unicornporn.bandcamp.com/album/the-white-stag
>>53493709
The drummer stole the show so hard on that album.
>>53494369
tried them a while ago, I remember it being ok, I'll try them out again though
>>53493100
I keep seeing prog thread after prog thread so I can't hold my tongue any longer. Prog or "progressive" rock is Olive Garden in music form. By that I of course mean that it is low culture which masquerades as high culture in order to make those who want to appear intellectual without actually putting in the effort feel as if they have arrived at that end. In its attempts to add elements of music which is ACTUALLY progressive and artful and elite (classical, electronic, the purer forms of jazz) to rock, which is by its very nature generic, simple, and made to appeal to the lowest common denominator, "prog" ends up not only being the antithesis of both but more objectively terrible than either, for it knows that it has failed in transcending mediocrity but continues to pretend as if it has.
>>53493709
This is great.
Is this their bst lie album? Love Sleepless on this one, Bruford's on fire.
>>53493536
saved! thanks dude.
>>53494489
I like it.
>>53493709
TRAM gives me such a boner.
>>53494489
I just like the way it sounds.
>>53494489
nice b8 faggot
>>53494519
>best
>live
>>53494489
> By that I of course
are people often mistaken about what person is making your statements?
>>53494489
no music is objectively better or 'more intelectual' than any other.
just let people like what they like
>>53494489
I keep seeing this type of comments. Why not listen to all of them? I listen to classical (mostly baroque era) and jazz but why not enjoy or listen to other genres? This just comes as close minded
>>53494489
*fits tedora*
>>53494665
You do realize most of the people in this board are teens.
>>53494616
Well you see, people who are easily duped into believing ideas as ludicrous as rock being able to become "progressive" by poorly appropriating elements of genres which are truly more majestic are usually a bit slow so I was just making sure you could get it.
>>53494634
>I don't know anything about music theory yet I think I can have a well informed opinion about music
Laugh every time.jpg
>>53494762
I guess. I'm just tired of people treating genres and artists as if they were in some sort of contest to decide which one is the best
>>53494769
>music theory
ohboyherewegoagain.jpg
It's always shitposters like you that bring it into subject
favorite heavy prog album?
mine is pic related
>>53494769
>he doesn't know about the is-ought problem
what a pleb
>>53494769
>music theory
I play in my college's symphonic band, music theory still has nothing to do with any perceived intellectual value of music
also prog rock borrows heavily from classical composition and if you can't tell that I think you need a lesson in theory
>>53494769
>i don't know anything about music theory
well at least you admitted you don't shit about music. fuck off already.
>>53494816
Gib malvinas
This is a far cry, but if the anon who told me to go get The Great Deceiver is here, you're great. I really prefer it over the other KC live stuff.
>>53494785
I never understood that. Giving an artist you really like a numerical rating.
>>53494905
I do it for AllMusic recommendations but it really has no meaning at all. I've found that most of my favorite albums have 3.0-3.80 raing on RYM and I don't really see why I and anybody else should care
>>53494959
I think is more logical to explain why you like something (or dislike) than just giving it a number. Maybe I'm wrong.
>>53494995
Yeah. Pulling a number out of your ass just trivializes someones hard work
Hello /prog/ friends
I'm going to be attending ROSfest this may
http://home.rosfest.com/2014-schedule/
I've heard of most of these bands but the only ones I've actually listened to are Spocks Beard and Haken
Are any of these other ones a must-hear?
Prog rock = Music for Perpetual virgins!
>>53495098
But your here in 4chan.
>>53493100
Am I the only one who thinks this album is just pretty mediocre overall and one of GG's worst? They've got plenty of other great albums.
>>53495390
I can understand not enjoying Gentle Giant as a whole but I feel like it is quite similar to most of their early material, especially acquiring the taste, so I see no reason to enjoy some and not Octopus. I personally think it is their best. Would you care to explain why you don't enjoy it?
>>53495506
I can't really explain it. I didn't find a lot of the compositions interesting and some tracks - namely Think of Me With Kindness and A Cry for Everyone - just bore me.
>>53495555
I would say those are the two weakest songs, still think they are pretty dang. good though
nice quads btw
>>53495555
>>53495599
checked
>>53495390
i think gentle giant is gay. i like prog but any with cheesy ass pop or theatrical vocals is just too corny for me.
>>53495506
Not him but I found Octopus overall rather dull. The Boys In The Band is their best song ever, though
>>53495555
>>53495599
>>53495611
CAN IT BE!?!?
>>53495651
Ok, you got me there. I admit that Boys in the Band is really good.
