What are your thoughts on songs in odd time signatures?

Also, dump your favorites.
>>
What thoughts would we have other than "Cool?"

Come on, there's no productive discussion from this.

It it just a gimmick for making a song unique and usual? Does it have a place in mainstream music outside of experimental stuff? Does it work universally in every genre?

There's plenty to discus.

usually different time signatures sound unnatural or shit but for some songs it works out

15/16 sounds odd as fuck when you look at it but it's pretty normal depending how you count it.
What's stranger is uh, Everything in it's Right Place I can't remember the sig but it was an odd one. Not too odd, but odd.

I think if there's a reason for it in the song it's neat.
Not much else to it than that though.
I write stuff in 21/16 when I want it to give the feel of being a bit frantic and off kilter but I don't think it's something worthy of noting I guess.
I used to be more interested in it.
>>
How would you guys notate something like 15/8 but with emphasis every five notes instead of every three? Like an inverted compound five, I guess.

two of my favorites:

DJ Shadow- Changeling (7/4)

Exactly like that. Thanks you.

It's usually just a cheap gimmick so I mostly hate it. But some people can work it out as more than a gimmick.
>>
>>53429227
It just depends on how something's written. I don't usually pay attention to the meter when I'm listening to something, so sometimes I don't even know if a song or section is in an odd time signature unless I'm learning how to play it.
>>
Polyrhythm is a bit hectic for me, but there are a few good ones:

These both have some buildup, so be warned.

Is that like pitch-shifted up or something? Sounds like ass.

But, yeah, didn't know that.

Most of this is NOT written in far out time signatures, but by clever use of polyrhythms and accents, it can sound more complicated than it really is

First one I found that didn't have the music video intro.

Not >>53428212 but

Sometimes
>Does it have a place in mainstream music outside of experimental stuff?
In top 40 probably no.
In reasonably popular music yes.
>Does it work universally in every genre?
No

Can someone give an example of 2/2 or 2/4?

It's effectively in four, but a measure of 2 thrown in at a point at the end of the verses.

>It's usually just a cheap gimmick
What kind of shitty music are you listening to, it's usually not even that noticeable

they will sound literally the same as 4/4, they are just an "easier" way organize slow songs
>>
>>53428190
I think odd time signatures are the future of music
>>
>>53430215
March-type songs are the best example, I think.

one time i accidentally wrote a song with fractional meter, somethin like "15 and two thirds 8" but it just had a triplet length quarter note it didn't need maybe. i like the way it sounded better with the extra 2/3 of an 8th note.
