What's /mu/'s honest opinion of Fender guitars?
>>
>>53361052
Generally cheap and good clean sounds
Very versatile and common
Overrated with the indie crowd along with Teiscos and Danelectros
A standard in the instrument world
They're fine
>>
>>53361052
I love mine. Telecasters are the shit. And the others I've played are really nice.
>>
good quality but jaguars and jazzmasters are fucking hideous
>>
>>53361173
That's subjective. They're my personal favorite.
>>
>>53361173
u out of your mind m8
jazzmasters are the shit
>>
really nice. decent price used and very playable. i do laugh at their ultra fancy stuff that they charge thousnads for though.
>>
>>53361140
overated in general, but yeah they are just standard ass guitars
>>
>>53361237
I said, theyre good guitars. they just look terrible. also theres the stigma of having one, theyre the joy division shirt of guitars. I know thats a secondary consideration but still.
>>
>>53361283
>also theres the stigma of having one
Are you really that insecure?
>>
>>53361283
>I post on /fa/
>it influences my life

take a break from the Internet kid
>>
>>53361283
i like they way they look. ive had my jazzmaster for years now. i honestly dont care that they became trendy. no one in real life acts like the people on /mu/ do about them

>>53361263
Agreed. Got my tele deluxe used for decent price, but the fact that they have the balls to charge over a grand for anything is a hoot
>>
Telecaster > ES-335 > Duo Jet > SG > Jazzmaster > Stratocaster > human feces > Les Paul > Jaguar
>>
>>53361364
PS Those things come with 250k pots stock. From the factory. How retarded is that? Switched to 500k and now she sings.
>>
>>53361395
>likes 335
>hates LPs
they have so many common features. this is dumb as all hell
>>
I haven't ever owned anything other than Fender, they were the first guitars I ever remember seeing and it's just worked out that way.

72 Telecaster Deluxe
Classic Player Jazzmaster
Fender Blacktop Telecaster (constantly modding)
Mark Hoppus Precision Bass
>>
>>53361283
>theyre the joy division shirt of guitars
I love Jazzmasters but that's fucking hilarious.
>>
>>53361052
strats are terrible. jazz masters and jags are great usually, teles are a mixed bag.
>>
>>53363016
>strats are terrible

The word your looking for is popular, champ.
>>
>>53361052
At first I was never really a fan of the Fender guitars, but over time they have grown on me. I especially love the bright sound of the Stratocaster.
>>
>>53361052
They're not bad (specially Telecaster and Stratocaster) but I prefer Gibson ones
>>
>>53363227

i can confirm. Many guitarists struggle with the pedestrian looks, but some love it

Well this is the only Strat I've had but it is by far the best guitar I've ever had.
>>
>>53363016
what do you want from a guitar that a strat can't do if you are a competent player? like i can understand if usually you play like 7 string extend range heavy low end stuff but there's a reason the strat is the 'default' electric guitar design
>>
>>53363016
>strats are terrible
*tips trillby*

G&L is the way to go if you like Fenders though.
>>
>>53363297
Agreed there. I am tempted to make a few metal songs with the Stratocaster because it just sounds so good.
>>
>>53363294
That's one sweet finish on there.

I've never owned a fender before, I've had squiers and plenty of knock offs, but I've never found a fullfledged fender guitar that I've really really liked.
>>
>>53363016
You have objectively a shit taste. Telecaster, stratocaster >>>>>>>> your pieces of shit for indie and shoegaze
>>
>>53363297
always lul at people who actually hate strats for no apparent reason than their edgy shit lords

or really any of the more "standard" guitars

gibson and fender are popular for a reason, if you can't make them sound good it's because you suck ass at your instrument

How so?
>>
>>53363227
>>53363297
>>53363387

they play like dog shit, have to be set-up constantly, and never stay in tune. They sound pretty good, but jesus christ do they play like shit.
>>
I like the sound of strat style guitars, I own a knockoff one which I changed the pickups in and it shines. The looks are pretty boring though. Does anyone know of a strat-sounding guitar that has a better design?
>>
>>53363485
Most Gibsons suck because most have humbuckers. Strats suck because they have a useless middle pickup.
>>
>>53361364
I am now erect.
Thank.
>>
>>53363638

What are you talking about when you say they never stay in tune? If you constantly do dive bombs with the floating bridge, then yeah they go out of tune, but other than they are generally pretty close to your tuning. Sure they may go a few cents sharp or flat, but every guitar does with. With the strat though, all the strings either go a little sharp or a little flat.

I love my strat. I remember a year ago when I bitched about the same problems, but over time I learned to control my Stratocaster. Now it is my primary guitar.
>>
can anybody explain the difference between a jazzmaster and jaguar? Do they sound different? I don't really see any aesthetic differences
>>
>>53363761
They're the exact same guitar.
>>
>>53363761
Different pickups and scale length
>>
>>53363776
then why the different names?
>>
>>53363798

>>53363790
>>
>>53363790
ahh i see. ty anon.
>>
>>53363761
Every guitar is going to have its variations in tones, even among the same model. From what I can see, the Jazzmaster is going to have a more murky tone while the Jaguar might offer a brighter tone. It all comes down to what you prefer more though. I would try out both guitars if you can, or read on forums what they sound like to other people.
>>
>>53363761
they have different pick ups and scale length and they're wired slightly differently, the Jazzy has a 3 way selector, but the Jag has on off switches for each pick up.
>>
>>53363798
One was made for Jazz players. Jaguars got rebranded as Jaguars to appeal to the latest style of music which at the time was Jag-rock.
>>
>>53363826
>i can tell you what a guitar will sound like just by looking at it yet i will essentially tell you nothing
>>
>>53363663
the middle pickup is good if you use guitar for ambient effects or soundscapes
>>
>>53363882
>ambient effects or soundscapes
Like I said earlier, useless.
>>
>>53363904
Not useless. I myself make ambient soundscapes and the middle pickup has a good tone to it.
>>
>>53363663
i'll indulge in some bait

i don't hear to often people complaining about humbuckers lol. different sound, not bad

combining pickups is the main draw of the middle. alone it's still noticeably different than the others. especially clean. not at all useless. strats have an amazingly flexible clean tone m8, u just suck at tones
>>
>>53363916
Nah it's useless. Especially considering most stock Strats are wired so that you can't have the neck and bridge on with the middle off. It's an easy fix but still annoying.
>>
Fenders are generally what are used in surf music, right? I know jack shit about guitars, but I've always loved that garage-y surf sound
>>
>>53363974
Not bait. I don't like humbuckers because they don't twang.
>>
>>53363991
I find that position to be too bass heavy. I find the middle single coil pickup to be pleasant to my ears.
>>
>>53364020
What's your favorite surf band?
>>
>>53364046
That middle pickup is nothing but quack. Also gets in the way of picking.
>>
>>53364025
WELP, depends on the kind of music mate, doesn't make em suck
>>
>>53361052
i like them.
>>
>>53364020
Mosrite is the most surf rock
>>
>>53364319
No.
>>
>>53364050
Classically? Probably The Chantays or Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnys. But Thee Headcoats is my favorite revival band
>>
>>53364415
Neither band you listed even used Fenders. Also, Thee Headcoats are not a surf band.
>>
>>53364468
I listed 3, I never said they use Fenders, and Thee Headcoats have put out multiple surf albums, although it's mixed in between regular garage rock. Cute that you're trying to one-up me when I was asking a question, though.
>>
>>53364570
>Thee Headcoats have put out multiple surf albums
But that's not true.
>>
Best friends.
>>
>>53363387
Fuck you, holmes, some of us use jags for their intended surf punk purpose, don't lump us in with those antisocial shoegaze aspies.

>>
>>53364468
not him but its pretty clear fenders were popular in the original surf scene. other stuff was also used of course
>>
>>53364840
I know that but he was trying to talk about a sound he clearly knows nothing about. Just saying.
>>
>>53364746
surf punk is a shit genre, it's just even more boring garage rock, as if that was even possible
>>
>>53365083
>>53364746
Not even a real genre. Jags were invented for surf-rock anyway after Fender saw the Jazzmaster was more popular with surf-rockers than jazzers. First guitar ever created with a specific genre in mind.
>>
>>53365190
it is

surf punk is dumbed down surf rock that barely resembles surf rock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYbJmQj5VkE
>>
I'm obsessed with Fender instruments, every bass or guitar I've ever owned has been a Fender.

I love Fender.
>>
>>53365220
That's not even surf-punk. More like pop-punk. This is what actual surf-punk sounds like.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWdVMLgfm6I

Not enough bands to have it's own genre though. Basically just Agent Orange, Dead Kennedy's and Night Birds so I just lump them with all other punk bands.

got a jap fender stratocaster
best guitar i've used and tried, never want to switch it out
>>
>>53363638
>has obviously never played anything other than squier strat or bottom of the line fender.
>>
>>53361052
Wonderful clean tones, very 'comfy' and easily playable, good ergonomics and all that.
In the band I prefer playing a german vintage semiacoustic since it gets a bigger sound (and I'm the only guitar in our band), but for practice, playing jazz or simply jamming, Stratocaster is perfect.
>>
>>53363638
Sounds like you only played fake strats made by other companies and/or are really bad at playing guitar. A Strat is one of the easiest guitars to play, especially compared to chunky pieces of sludge like a Les Paul (though I like and use both for different things).
>>
>>53365272
So is this surf-punk? or am i getting confused because it's got surfing in it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cLxbAQMeWE
>>
>>53361173
>Best looking Fender design
>hideous
>>
>>53361283
Who cares about stigma? If you like it you like it.
>>
>>53361052
Literally the best guitar to play if youre into shoegaze/rock/indie/alternative/jazz music
>>
>>53367452
>Fender best for jazz

lolwut
>>
>>53365220
Yeah, fuck Fidlar, Wavves and all those bands.
>>53365272
is correct in terms of surf punk.
>>53367392
You are getting confused. The surf sound is usually any combination of 50s reverbed tremolo picking and chilled out drum beats.
Never example https://soundcloud.com/i-am-the-sun/dive-deeper
>>
>>53367529
Best clean sound and playability. Soundwise, a semiacoustic might be better, but you'll also fuck up your tendons from the higher action.
>>
>>53367570
>fuck up your tendons
expand on this pls
>>
>>53367809
Due to the higher string action, complex chords involving barré- and thumbuse require more pressure from fingers and different hand positions, which also have to switch quickly.
Such quick changes and chords put additional strain on the tendons in your hand, possibly leading to tenosynovitis (which is a common problem in jazz guitar players).
This is alleviated by a thinner neck on the guitar, low action (as in low distance from string to fret/fretboard) and a overall ergonomic design.

Try playing a few jazz chords (lets say Dm7 to G7 to Em7 to A7 which is the opening of the exercise I'm currently doing) in quick succession on a Gibson Les Paul or other guitar with a chunky neck (or worse yet, a semiacoustic with high action and a thick neck). Then try playing the same on a Fender guitar, for example the Strat or Jazzmaster.
>>

>there's a stigma

>Strats are terrible

Learn to set up the bridge properly, float the tremolo, and get a moderately warm bridge (the standard MIM bridge pups suck) I don't even used a single coil in my bridge.

Jazzmasters are good, Jaguars are okay, Teles might be the best guitar out there.

>>53363638
I've only had to set my strat up twice in the five years I've had, once when I got it, once when I went from 9 gauge strings to 10 gauge.

>>53363663
I use the middle pick up the most, it has the power of the bridge, but the tone of the neck, it sounds quite nice actually, and in 2nd and 4th position it goes out of phase with the neck or bridge giving you the signature snappy/jangly strat sound

Telecasters are the GOAT versatile guitar. if you're judicious with tone settings you can do everything short of maybe death metal

I can somewhat understand getting the same guitar twice, but both white?!
