yo anon, all of this rather lovely - I think after dinner was my favorite
some recs from myself:
Takako Minekawa
>experimental pop
Ex-wife of Cornelius, she just got back in the music game, working with Dustin Wong on a couple of albums

Panicsmile
>krautrock, post punk
Very Captain Beefheart-esque, and throw in a little deerhoof too. I really enjoyed their latest album, really raw

Mitsume
>indie rock, funk-infused rock, dream-pop
These guys are the ideal indie band - they have no label so they manage their own advertisement, press their own CDs, and even made their own website (one of the members is a programmer, go figure).

hmmm, I feel like there are a ton, but I just haven't gotten very much into that end.
You could try: Yann Tomita, Cornelius, Yellow Magic Orchestra - but I feel they all have a different aesthetic when compared to Minekawa

Ogre You Asshole
>Indie rock, funk and bossa nova influenced rock
I'm pretty sure most of you are familiar with OYA, but if you think they are just a run-of-the-mill J-rock band, listen to their latest album. The compositions get tighter, and funky bass lines and beats take the floor - a definite growth and a successful presentation of that growth. They definitely have taken some inspiration from Shin-chan.

>triphop, ambient, bossa
>>53271864
this is really dope - the lead vox plays a mean bass too
The sheer energy reminds of Teashikuchibiru (they released an album last year but I can't find anything yet)

dammit beat me to the punch - and with their best track too
Also: Buddha Brand, DJ Krush (with estero for trip hop needs), Schaa Dara Paar
Sparta Locals
>post punk
The bass lines are what make this band great - not that the angular screeches of the lead are chopped liver and the vox have a strange power behind them.

Yoshinori Sunahara
>techno, beats, bossa nova,
Sunahara has a storied career - first active in Denki Groove before going to solo career, which also included him acting as a producer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9cQ8b87Wts
(my favorite beat of all time)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXlSQ-NrDkE
If there was a required Japanese listening list, Not for Sale by him and Hibiki Tokiwa would be on it - there is nothing like it.

Supercar
>Shoegaze, electro-rock, garage/punk
Speaking of Sunahara, he helped produce Supercar's Highvision, apparent in the heay use of synths. SUpercar are my absolute favorite band of all time so all I can say is - listen! They have something for everybody.

yuji ohno (sure you've listened to - he's the guy who did the music for Lupin)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TymcURUBQI
>Sadistic mika band
while more of a rock band, they got few tracks that are heavy with the funk stylings
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTJXY0yW6JA

Ryo Fukui
>Jazz, post-bop/modal (I dunno)
If you haven't yet listened to scenery, please do - its a classic that transcends nationality. I think he stills plays at a bar in Sapporo
(early summer is the highlight)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIxHWj0pGwU
Takeshi Inomata and Sound Unlimited
>jazz, modal
Ethereal stuff over here, the vocals on the album are really light and airy that pair real well with the composition.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5e7iS6THyDc
Isao Quartet
>jazz
Vreates a very ambient atmosphere with most of his works. First track from this album was actually sampled by the Buddha Brand
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxQA22rEjzQ

yeah this is hot, when that bass hit, my face just contorted in disgust - too nasty

Zazen Boys
>funk influence, post-punk
I'm big number girl guy, so listening to zazen boys was something of a shock at first. Even though its also a Mukai-led project, the melodies chased is a lot different - much more avant-garde
