>Things you like/dislike about the style shoegaze as a whole?
I guess one thing I don't like is lack of experimentation in genre or lack of pushing it forward. That's why I love gaze bands from Japan or Kairon;IRSE! They are making interesting things in the genre. Now that being said, that doesn't mean I don't like shoegaze coming from other bands. Just something they should think about I guess.

>>53265757
The list or Drop Nineteens?
>>
>>53260246
I'd recommend these in order of appearance:

Curve - Doppelgänger is essential dancy-shoegaze
Lilys - In The Presence of Nothing is essential non-mbv amazing early 90s shoegaze
Medicine - Shot Forth Self Living is essential noise pop
Moose - ...XYZ is essential britpop/gaze
Lovesliescrushing - Bloweyelashwish and Flying Saucer Attack - Flying Saucer Attack are essential ambient shoegaze. Seriously I really highly recommend these.
Astrobrite is amazing but don't listen to Crush, if you want conventional shoegaze go for Super Crush, for noise shoegaze Pinkshinyultrablast, and for experimental noisy shoegaze Whitenoise Superstar.
M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts is pretty cool electronic shoegaze.
Skywave and A Place To Bury Strangers does/did really cool punk/post punky shoegaze.

That's not to say all the others suck, but these are standout ones in my mind.

>>
>>53259453
is that a girl
>>
>>53265598
>It's pretty much harsh noise with drums and vocals
it really isnt. Despite being wildly distorted, the bass and guitar still establish an organized melody and pattern or every song.

What 'harsh noise' do you listen to?
>>
>What have you been listening to recently?
pinkshinyultrablast, wildhoney, title fight, cloakroom
>>
>>53268522
Cloakroom's cool, they have the distortion and the subdued melodies/songwriting but not the guitars that blend into each other like most of these bands have. It really sets them apart.
>>
>>53268515
Don't really listen to a lot of it. I got the impression from what I've heard. They also seem to owe a lot to Sunn O)))
>>
>>53267294
Yeah, also they're one of those bands where although most of their songs are throwaways, no one else is going what they do, so you don't really have any alternative. When they do make a good track though it's usually great.
>>
>>53268799
Actually, the guy in the band once said he was really into Melvins. I'm not sure what he's said about Sunn O))).
>>
I've never managed to get into Shoegaze but it seems conceptually like something I'd like, since I love noise rock.

Can you suggest an album for me?

>>
>>53269261
So you just thought it was boring? Are you not really into like dreamy pop stuff? A lot of shoegaze was inspired by that type of thing.

Why are you afraid of britpop? Because it isn't a "cool" genre or spoiled by Oasis? There's alot of good britpop, and alot of them like Suede and Pulp are very guitar heavy.

Ride's peak is Nowhere and GBA. They had an inbetween EP, Today Forever that is also excellent. After GBA, their quality went downwards. I would check out their short-lived reunion EP they recorded live in 2001, Coming Up For Air. Its very much in the vein of shoegaze Ride.

Coming Up for Air makes up for it.

>>

2/3rd of these albums are overrated shit. Protip: when a genre is fairly new there's probably not that many essential albums. Protip 2 : sunbather is shit

MBV of course

I'd say this is one of my favourite shoegaze albums and is as good as Souvlaki nearly. Spanish Air is one of my favourite songs.

The December Sound. Definitely.

>>53288822
God, why? Moose fucking sucks and M83 isn't like either of the bands he liked.

Pretty good almost as good as soulvaki

I'm just testing out this new project I've wanted to try for a while, sort of a have a nice life-esque industrial post-punk shoegaze kind of thing

I haven't bought a mic yet, but I've spent the last few days just putting down some very general ideas for backing tracks

https://soundcloud.com/smidan-1

I really hope adding my voice will make it sound less like HANL, because right now I'm not very proud of how exactly similar I think it sounds in ways

demo 4 is sounding corny as FUCK with that melodramatic af guitar lead and those weird mechanical drum sounds, but it guess it's not really finished because it's pretty much just a guitar lead and a drum machine.

demo 3 is sounding good though, i'd probably like it if it droned on for a little longer, and maybe if it wasn't just two repeating chords.

i get what you mean by the HANL resemblance. I'm not sure if I'd even like adding vocals to these though.

slowdive are probably the most lukewarm band of the shoegaze stuff tbh, they do nothing for me
>>
I think the problem that most people have with Ride is their innate britpop/jangle-pop roots and that turns people off because people like to think that shoegaze always has to be slow and drone-y which is far from the truth. Shoegaze has roots heavily ingrained in jangle pop and Ride were masters of their craft in blurring the line between the two.
>>
>>53298600
This, but a lot of people also say that Going Blank Again is the GOAT, so it's not like everyone thinks that way.
>>
>>53298613

Well those people already like Ride, so they completely understand them as a musical entity. I'm referring to the people that don't like Ride and/or just can't into them
>>
>>53298600
Well, most shoegaze seems to be that way, which is why I love Going Blank Again so much.
It's literally the only shoegaze album I can think of that has so much energy and happiness to it in place of haziness and heavy moods. Though the lyrics can get quite melancholy at parts (OX4), the musical aspect just feels so fucking lush and lively. It's one of my essential summer albums because it's just so warm and colorful.
It really sets itself apart from the rest of the genre.

I do, but I'm not at my computer. If I remember, I'll upload it when I get back to my house later tonight, unless someone else posts it beforehand. Just check the archive tomorrow and I'll have it on here.

Hey guys,

I'm trying to make the ultimate playlist of shoegaze songs to play on my commute. What should I put on there? Dream pop, noise pop, and space rock/psychedelic rock are fine too.

So far I have:
Ride - Leave Them All Behind, Vapour Trail, Seagull, Dreams Burn Down
The Verve - Gravity Grave, She's a Superstar, Slide Away
Slowdive - Alison, Souvlaki Space Station, Machine Gun, When The Sun Hits
My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow, To Here Knows When, Sometimes, Soon
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Evergreen, Wisdom
Yo La Tengo - I Heard You Looking
Lush - De-Luxe
Blur - Sing, She's So High
>>
>>53304038
Because people who organized NBDPD have no idea what dream pop is. The XX, Smitn Westerns, Mac Demarco, that is not dreampop.
>>
>>53304038
I tried to make it happen man no one would post
I even got a few comments that told me to stop posting :(
It was great in 2013.
These generals are cool though

Have a Nice Life - I Don't Love
The Depreciation Guild - Butterfly Kisses, Digital Solace
Asobi Seksu - Red Sea, Pink Cloud Tracing Paper
The Ecstasy of St. Theresa - Square Wave, Honeyrain, Ice Cream Star
