>this passage
Goddamn it Gombert, you can't just have 6 overlapping statements of the same sequence at crotchet distance from each other with two pairs in parallel 3rds and expect no consequences. Sorting the correct application of ficta, if any, is going to be a bloody nightmare.
>>
>>53061581
Hang on, why is the tenor doubling the superius at an octave below, something's off here...
>>
>>53061560
>I’m amazed that quite a few people, including one famous conductor who likens the end to a “scream”, have got this music so utterly wrong. Doom laden? Screams? The end of the world? That closing blast is the culmination of a rollercoaster ride of peaks and troughs across all of these great symphonies, especially this one. It is the perfect end to the whole cycle of this giant’s symphonies. You can liken it to a landscape, or you can liken it to a life journey, but those closing moments are when you get to a summit, look around, and see a magnificent sight. It is the sound of making it through, the apex, final success, whatever, but NOT a scream, and certainly not doom.

Why does everyone obsess over Schubert's 14th and 15th string quartets when the 13th is just as good or even better?
>>
>>53062027

haven't a clue mate.
>>

Because CLT meme'd him

>you better follow muh strict arbitrary rules

this is why classical music died
>>
>>53062413

It's not dead. And OP is being facetious; unless you have a very very good sense of pitch, you wouldn't notice anything amiss in the situation.
>>
>>53062449
or if u listen to just intoned music

i've developed this distaste, too, and i'm not a trained musician.

i like to play one on tv tho :-)

>14th
Because it's the most popular, most frequently performed, and most likely to appear in pop culture.
>15th
Because it's CLT's favorite piece of music.
>>
heres the official rankings anyway

1. 15th
2. 13th
3. 14th
4. 12th
5. D112

>>
ades is a good composer
>>
>>53064863

He is indeed. Have you listened to either of his operas yet?

Undecided whether my favourite Ades is his piano quintet or Totentanz
>>
>>53064950

And just looking at his website, one of my favourite quartets will be performing the quintet in April. However it's in Sydney, so I doubt I'll be in a position to see it.
>>
>>53055298
I sang in choirs a whole lot growing up, sometimes a piano is all that's available for accompaniment, you just gotta roll with it even when it's not ideal. Frankly I think a choir on its own is preferable to a choir being backed up by a piano, but I think that's mostly because all of the pieces written for choir w/ piano are trash.
>>
>>53065012

Sort of missing the point there.

But yeah, often pieces for piano and choir are just to allow amateur choirs full of old people to sing stuff, with the piano able to cover up the horrendous tuning (and lack thereof) of the choir
>>
>>53064950
nope, but i'm about to hear part of the tempest i think, just grabbed this

March 25, 2011 Symphony Hall Boston

Tchaikovsky The Tempest, Op.18
Adès Violin Concerto, Op. 24 "Concentric Paths", Anthony Marwood-Violin
Sibelius The Tempest, Op. 109
Adès The Tempest
Hila Plitmann & Kate Royal- Sopranos
Toby Spence - Tenor
Christopher Maltman - Baritone

Thomas Adès cond. Boston Symphony Orchestra

fun theme concert, love when orchestra do those
>>
>>53065258

Hm, I would have thought they'd just go for the overture to The Tempest if they were performing any part of it, but the fact that they've got vocalists suggests they'll be doing a bit more. The soprano part for Ariel is absolutely insane at times, so hopefully they include some of that, because it's very impressive when done well
>>
>>53056683
I think you might be using the word terrible too loosely.
>>
Can somebody explain the point of a symphony? They're just fucking drags as well nearly all pieces of music over 25 mins.
>>
>>53065401
no fan of the work either
>>
>>53065465
You could just say that
>>
>>53065445
