Wow anon who said I was referring to that picture? Way to jump to conclusions.
>>
>>52973118
you were referring to the man in the picture, but the picture shows him being decidedly unpretentious
therefore you're wrong and a pleb since you know nothing about stockhausen
he really wasn't pretentious, he was just an autist
he didn't get repetition, and I don't just mean that as a meme in reference to aphex meme
>>
>>52973118
i don't think he was pretentious at all
he might have been a bit patronising but i only ever saw him do it to troll lazy critics
>>
>>52973170

>>52973186
That's actually quite funny tbh.

if you read between the lines he could be hilarious at times

how is this not pretentious

also while we're at it. 4'33'' by John Cage is just as shit, but apparently half of /mu/ thinks it's soooo deep

I would but ehh

At least 4'33" has some kind of meaning and can be thought provoking when you first hear about it.
>>
>>52973272
yeah but think about the context he delivered it in and how annoying traditionalists found it
and then listen to his serious work and ask yourself whether he had a point

you don't even have to agree with him but he was right about people being fixated on certain ideas
>>
>>52972237
>this pic

it's like signal analysis for mentally retarded people lmao. easy as shit.
>>
>>52973272
See, what makes you an inferior retard here is not that you can't get some deeper meaning in 4 33 but that you assume that there is one
if you can't figure it out yourself just listen to john cages explanations, which he gave unpretentiously, the piece itself is simply about listening to environmental noise around the performer
in case you think that noise can't be music, well, that noise can be music is commonly accepted now, make up your own mind I guess
>>
>>52973261
Fuck he got fat.
>>52973272
4'33" isn't really that great but at least it's interesting.

funny, his sheets look like Schulze's, but Schulze at least made good music
>>
Mantra, definitely
>>
>>52973298
yeah but having been one of the first people to play with the boundary of pulse and tonality he was pretty well placed to employ the distinction
>>

like Klaus Schulze?

do you seriously not find Kontakte interesting?
>>
>>52973430
Nah, I was talking about Miroslav Schulze, but you've probablynever heard of him. Pleb.
>>
>>52973430
yeah, this is taken from X
but he always denied being influenced by avant garde music like Stockhausen's

Well I haven't listened to it since 2012 so I should give it another listen, but at the time not really.

It's not pretentious, just kind of... immature.
>also while we're at it. 4'33'' by John Cage is just as shit
John Cage's 4'33" is the near-perfect execution of a concept that is both extremely simple in idea and extremely powerful in impact. The only thing which could potentially detract from the execution is the necessity to be someplace specific to experience it ( and even then, that could be considered a strength) It is one of the purest, most sincere and unpretentious expressions of optimism in music; simply because it encourages the listener to find beauty in the world around them the way it is, without having to intentionally manipulate it to produce what we traditionally see as beautiful music.
>>
>>52972996
Those are his most important and influential works, but I'm not sure about masterpiece...
>>
>>52973170
>he didn't get repetition, and I don't just mean that as a meme in reference to aphex meme
Actually repetition was really frowned upon at the time. Stuff like total serialism was the hot thing at the time. It's not that he didn't get it, it's more that the postwar era centered around eliminating those things.
>>
>>52973298
no, only periodic tones; noise doesn't repeat
>>
>>52974572
>simply because it encourages the listener to find beauty in the world around them the way it is, without having to intentionally manipulate it to produce what we traditionally see as beautiful music.

I think the point is more that you don't necessarily have to "find beauty" at all; you take it for what it is without having to make value judgments. Cage didn't set out to make things that were beautiful so much as he just wanted to watch them unfold.
