>there are people in the world who think that this is the pinnacle of modern music
>there are people in the world who spent $500 for cassettes of slowed-down Diana ross songs
>there are people who think that this album is “a brief glimpse into the new possibilities of international communication" and "a parody of American hypercontextualization of e-Asia circa 1995" (it's words, not mine)

How the fuck is vapormeme still a thing in 2015? Is there a genre that requires less talent and attracts more pretentious windbags?

I don't get it. Is it because any moron can open up a cheesy 80s song in audacity, slow it down and make an ironic 90s album cover? Everyone on /mu/ can be a vapormeme "musician!"
>>
>>52607759
>Is there a genre that requires less talent and attracts more pretentious windbags?

Yeah, harsh noise, wall noise and noise in general. Just like vaporshit, it literally requires zero talent.

You're not a writer, you slow down ironic 80s pop songs in audacity.

Why would anyone want to slow down Dianna Ross songs unless they want to be "musicians."

I personally don't take vaporwave that seriously where I consider it a brief glimpse into the new possibilities of international communication or a parody of American hypercontextualization I mostly enjoy it for the nostalgic smooth sounds it gives off. And the combination of the sound and cover art put images of being on the internet late at night in a isolated room which is very relaxing for me almost like music for NEETS in a way. But I will admit the creation of vaporwave is a bit lazy but I feel that the sound makes up for it (also I treat it like what it is I try to avoid being pretentious).
>>
>>52608087
See, I can respect this.

Fuck, why is /mu/ always 3 years behind on fucking everything? Your perception of vaporwave is fucking stupid and based off this one shit album.
>>
>>52607759
lmao literally only that 420 chinese letters song is Diana Ross slowed down, and even that one has some chops here and there and some reverb. That song become a meme and you are part of it.The album has a great fucking nostalgic mood and achieves exactly what it wants to achieve.
>>
>>52608174
Oh my god, it has a reverb filter? Sorry I underestimated it's talents. :^)

no. i was here in 2012 and we were talking about vaporwave then.

i am in fact surprised vaporwave is still generating interest as i thought it would die off in 2013 but i think the reason why it's still being talked about it that it does speak to and resonate with a certain cultural mood that this generation identifies with - this is something i did feel at the time but did not anticipate it to have any broader appeal beyond internet music nerds

i could go into it a lot more with the ideas of digital nativism, accelerationism, and virtuality of experience but i'll leave it at

this is exactly why i was so reluctant to elaborate further on those points.

anyway, read wire magazine, vaporwave is definitely a serious current in electronic music conceptualisations (eg fatima al qadiri - asiatich) and no longer just some tumblr internet plaything you can write off

Hey guys, can this be a Vaporwave reccomendations thread?

I had a Youtube channel where I uploaded guys from Soundcloud and bandcamp but it got pulled down for copyright violations and I lost over 1000 favs :((((

>>>52608087
This. I don't listen to Vaporwave for any purposed ideologies, just because it sounds really good to me and a lot of the tracks would emotional value to me or tug at my heart because they are very capable at bringing back sounds, images and feelings from my childhood and coupling it with things I think are beautiful, like neon lights, chinese, japanese and korean characters, futurism, retro futurism, neet culture, etc.

I listen to it unironically because I think it sounds and looks good.

What upsets is that people think that others are incapable of enjoying the aesthetic for what it is, which is fun, campy music to make you think you're in a shopping center in 1989.

It's made worse by the fact there are some that do take it seriously as if it was some anti-consumerist, high concept cultural movement, which stokes the memefire even more.

OP is making the same point about vaporwave that Karl Pilkington makes about outsider art: that anyone could have done it. Well, no one did actually do it. Part of creativity and art is coming up with things that others just haven't thought to do.

People should read this book. It will help you understand vapourwave and it's one of the best 20th century books by far, if not the best.

I think I might switch to listening to exclusively to vapourwave. I don't think you can really listen to vapourwave and other music, because vapourwave is really anti-music. Music is there to awaken and play with emotions but wavpourwave is about dampening or even crushing them. You can't really be a vapourwave fan and a fan of regular music.

The book is written by a lonely clerk, but his attitude in life is pretty NEETish. The book has no plot or story whatsoever, it's just a collection of hundreds of notes/fragments. He talks constantly about dreaming and detachment from reality.
This detachment from the world, fragmentation, and dreaming is the essence of vapourwave imo.

"All I asked of life is that it ask nothing of me. At the
door of the cottage I never had, I sat in the sunlight that
never fell there, and I enjoyed the future old age of my
tired reality (glad that I hadn’t arrived there yet). To still
not have died is enough for life’s wretches, and to still
have hope .....
..... satisfied with dreams only when I’m not dreaming,
satisfied with the world only when I’m dreaming far
away from it. A swinging pendulum, back and forth,
forever moving to arrive nowhere, eternally captive to
the twin fatality of a centre and a useless motion."

"Today I was struck by an absurd but valid sensation. I
realized, in an inner ash, that I’m no one. Absolutely no
one. In that ash, what I’d supposed was a city proved to
be a barren plain, and the sinister light that showed me
myself revealed no sky above. Before the world existed, I
was deprived of the power to be. If I was reincarnated, it
was without myself, without my I.
I’m the suburbs of a non-existent town, the longwinded commentary on a book never written. I’m no
one, no one at all. I don’t know how to feel, how to
think, how to want. I’m the character of an unwritten
novel, wafting in the air, dispersed without ever having
been, among the dreams of someone who didn’t know
how to complete me."

Nothing irks me more than the vocabulary of social
responsibility. The very word ‘duty’ is unpleasant to me,
like an unwanted guest. But the terms ‘civic duty’,
‘solidarity’, ‘humanitarianism’ and others of the same ilk
disgust me like rubbish dumped out of a window right
on top of me. I’m offended by the implicit assumption
that these expressions pertain to me, that I should find
them worthwhile and even meaningful.
I recently saw in a toy-shop window some objects that
reminded me exactly of what these expressions are:
make-believe dishes filled with make-believe tidbits for
the miniature table of a doll. For the real, sensual, vain
and selfish man, the friend of others because he has the
gift of speech and the enemy of others because he has
the gift of life, what is there to gain from playing with
the dolls of hollow and meaningless words?
Government is based on two things: restraint and
deception. The problem with those glittering expressions
is that they neither restrain nor deceive. At most they
intoxicate, which is something else again.
If there’s one thing I hate, it’s a reformer. A reformer is
a man who sees the world’s superficial ills and sets out
to cure them by aggravating the more basic ills. A doctor
tries to bring a sick body into conformity with a normal,
healthy body, but we don’t know what’s healthy or sick
in the social sphere.
I see humanity as merely one of Nature’s latest schools
of decorative painting. I don’t distinguish in any
fundamental way between a man and a tree, and I
naturally prefer whichever is more decorative, whichever
interests my thinking eyes. If the tree is more interesting
to me than the man, I’m sorrier to see the tree felled
than to see the man die. There are departing sunsets that
grieve me more than the deaths of children. I keep my
own feelings out of everything, in order to be able to
feel.

here's a poem from the same author

From my village I see as much in the Universe as you can see from earth...
So my village is as big as any other land
Because I’m the size of what I see,
Not the size of my height...

In the cities life is smaller
Than here in my house on top of this hill.
In the city the big houses shut your sight with a key,
Hide the horizon, push your eyes far away from all the sky,
Make us smaller because they take away what our eyes can give us,
And make us poor because our only wealth is seeing.

Love is companionship.
I don’t know how to walk alone on the roads anymore
Because I can’t walk alone anymore.
A visible thought makes me walk faster
And see less and at the same time really enjoy seeing everything.
Even her absence is a thing that’s with me.
And I love her so much I don’t know how to want her.
If I don’t see her, I pretend I do and I’m as strong as trees are tall.
But if I see her I tremble, I don’t know what happens to what I feel when she’s not there.
All I am is some strength abandoning me.
All reality looks at me like a sunflower with her face in the middle of it.

------

You talk about civilization, and that it shouldn’t be,
Or shouldn’t be the way it is.
You say everybody suffers, or the majority of everybody,
And it’s because humans make things that way.
You say if things were different, we’d suffer less.
You say if things were like you want them, it would be better.
I hear you without listening.
Why should I want to listen to you?
Listening to you won’t make me know any better.
If things were different, they’d be different: that’s all.
If things were like you want them, they’d only be like you want them.
Oh, you and everybody else going through life
Wanting to invent a machine for making happiness!

Look faggot, if you're not going to take the time to find more music in the genre (literally so many albums are better than floral shoppe) you don't deserve to understand it. If you think it's fair to determine a whole genre of music just by listening to one album and saying "lol it's all just slowed down 80s music" you're an ignorant retard.
