Hello /mu/. I have 17 shares for you. They're all in the vein of field recordings, drone, warm ambient, cold ambient, sound experimentation, and 1 or 2 lowercase releases. I think they're all interesting and share-worthy releases.

Let's begin.

Beautytone - Four Landscapes
>Ambient, Field Recording, Warm, Nature
>Simple ambient tracks that change mood multiple times.
https://mega.co.nz/#F!nNgwiS6L!lQhlW_FyhdYzg7apD5jlfA

If you guys would like samples with these shares let me know, I'll try to find some.

Beautytone - Summer
>Ambient, Field Recording, Sound Collage
>Interesting release that reminds me of Boards of Canada (through some songs' samples) and Oneohtrix Point Never (through some songs' synths and repeated samples). Would recommend.

DR - Minimalism
>Ambient, Drone, Tape Loop
>Incredibly soft ambient. Imagine a bright, serene equivalent to Eno's ambient 4. no pun intended, very minimalist.
>Released on the same label as that of Beautytone.

Jana Winderen - Debris
>Field Recording, Sound Collage
>Very interesting release from one of my favorite field recording experimenters. This release, like others of hers, is very wintery and cold. It features wind sounds, rain and droplet sounds, melting ice, and odd, unidentifiable sounds that work in the release. Jana Winderen's pieces always seem constantly interesting and sound like asmr audio.

>Field Recording, Sound Collage
>3rd of my 4 Jana Winderen shares. This one takes a set of hers from a show in Tokyo. This release compiles pieces of her other releases into a single set and, therefore, includes a wide range of textures. It's like a sampler of some of her works.

Jana Winderen - Out of Range
>Field Recording, Sound Collage, Audio Experimentation
>My final Winderen share, this release has the coolest concept by far (quotation from the TouchShop [the label]):
>"Out of Range" is an audio work based on ultrasound and echolocation used by bats, dolphins and other creatures who operate beyond the range of human hearing - 'seeing' with sound, or perhaps 'hearing' objects. The ultrasound is time-stretched to bring it into a frequency range audible for human beings.

Yann Novak - 3 Renditions

A 48-minute track consisting of field recordings of near-silent places; you can always hear something, but it's very quiet, very peaceful. This is followed by a second, 20-minute track that reworks field recordings into an ambient track — still subtle but the contrast is striking. (label: Room40)

Nice thread OP, I like this stuff.

I'm an avid field recordist and composer and I've never really mixed the two together, but lately I'm working on some new amibient stuff and I think I'm going to incorporate some field recordings from my library.

It's weird that I don't listen too much to this kind of music but it's almost obvious it's the kind of music I should be piecing together.

The trick is to keep it from sounding like "new age relaxation" cheese but to also feature location and nature recordings.

Anybody else make this stuff?

that's the gist of it yes. I have a number of mics but generally when I'm /out/ I don't take a whole lot of stuff. Sometimes just the recorder and headphones, sometimes the omnis with tripods. I also have a binaural bowling ball mic that captures absolutely stunning immersive stuff, but it's a beast and you can't exactly hike with it. I also built a parabolic mic which is cool as hell and have super long distance focus, but those mics don't sound "pretty" at all.
>>
>>52603962
That bowling ball dummy head looks fantastic and ridiculous at the same time.
>>
>>52604035
it is definitely both of those things

here's a silly recording I got with it whilst camping with some friends

spooky... were these wolves or something
>>
>>52605192
thanks bro! in a weird way it's my passion, i just wish I lived somwhere with more interesting stuff to record. the woods is cool and call and there's weather (thunder, rain, wind I guess) but there's a whole world out there that pops alive in a very peculiar and specific way when it's JUST sound without image. it's like smelling a kitchen with all the food cooking as opposed to an instagram of a plate on a table, if you know what i mean.

>>52605304
close, coyotes. i would LOVE to get wolves but there aren't any near where I am. the sound of wolves is actually quite different and it stirs some seriously stomach-churning prehistoric instinct when you hear them.

Can you tell us some stories from when you go recording, please?
I find it genuinly interesting.
Also it helps keep this great thread alive for a bit longer.

I don't really have a whole lot of stories. I usually take whatever rig I've decided on and hike out to a camping spot and set up, and I run it off and on (as to save batteries and such) and hope I get somethng cool.

Even shit like a plane flying over when you're out alone in the forest sounds so vast and awesome when you listen back to the recording. You can hear the sound echoing back from the horizon, with the fire crackling and the minute little crunches and sounds of the forest.

Pic is my parabolic mic - I don't have anything interesting recorded with it, but it's pretty good. I used it to hunt-down a cricket in the basement once. Good for birdwatchers if they want to focus-in on a certain birdsong from a hundred feet away without disturbing it

I'd love to get to the newly-restored wolves in Yellowstone (plus all the hydrothermal stuff I guess). I love the sound of erupting volcanoes but that's a tough one! Plus just city streets with buskers and shit is cool. Large-scale construction is surprisingly beautiful. This one time I got a surround recording with 5 shotgun mics near a highrise development and I didn't even notice until I listened-back later that there were these long tone-like chords being played by the machines. If you cleaned it up in RX or something to extract just the tones it was like scifi mooscape shit! That recording is now lost though, one of my friends might still have it.

Here's a couple piezo contact mics and a stethoscope mic I made. I was hoping to get cool recordings of insect colonies and a beehive or something but that opportunity is rare and hasn't happened yet. Enjoy my heart instead.

you should check out michael pisaro's recording from this year, Continuum Unbound.

also check out pretty much everything from Toshiya Tsunoda.

They weave field recordings into larger structures in a beautiful way. I think you'll like their music.

How would you go about recording in a city?
Don't you get people interfering or police asking what you're doing?
>>
>>52606054
Awesome thanks! I will check those out. I remember stumbling across someone who would record bridges with contact mics (the cables and beams and shit) and make music out of them. It was amazing stuff. I have hopes to record train rails with my contact mics but I'm afraid of passing trains seeing the tracks wired-up and reporting it as *highly* suspicious.

>>52606059
Haha yeah, we were drunk and myf riend was telling a really bad joke and the only laugh he got at the punchline was the coyotes, it was hilarious.

>>52606108
I haven't had a problem yet. You need to stay away from personal/private conversations and places of business. If you look like a journalist or some sort of professional you'll be fine. I've never been approached by police, one time a guy pulled over in his car and asked wtf I was doing, said "come on over a sec and I'll give you something to fuckin' record". lel.

One of my friends go thrown out of a train station with a recording rig though but he's a retard.

You use more discrete mics. I hate when I see pics of recordists lugging a MS config in a blimp through the middle of London because no one would ever do that.

Sometimes people interfere but they're usually just curious. Police don't care, it's not illegal. I once got thrown out of a casino though because "photography" wasn't allowed, and the meathead couldn't understand that I wasn't photographing anything.

Geir Jenssen - Stromboli (2013)

>Geir Jenssen (aka Biosphere) presents two ultra vivid and dynamic field recordings of the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean" - an active volcano on the northern coast of Sicily. Made on July 19th 2012 at 9:30pm by the edge of Stromboli's crater, 924m above sea level, both pieces ironically sound as though they were captured underwater, but in fact document the active volcano spitting molten rocks and ash into a night sky against a gentle breeze. This surreal feeling of elemental, geological motion and morphosis is emphasised further in a swirling B-side Dub where the famed sound designer subtly manipulates the core recording's natural features. It's genuinely immersive stuff and makes a great package together with the beautiful cover photography.

I like Seefeel a lot. For people who don't know them, their first releases were ambient techno with dream pop influences (dream pop loops and techno beats), then they got darker, more ambient and minimal before disbanding. They reunited a few years ago, but with a different line-up and a glitchier sound (not quite as good, though still worth a listen).

Also somewhat similar: Bowery Electric, Main.

>>52608574
Same here, I like Garamond a lot and I've listened to quite a few Sacred Bones albums just because of their design. Most of them weren't my thing though, the only one I got into was the first Pharmakon album (haven't listened to the second one yet because I rarely listen to the first one).

Listening to this right now, I like it a lot. (Nice cover art too.)

>>52609125
Biosphere is probably my favourite ambient artist. I still haven't listened to his entire discography, but Microgravity (ambient techno), Substrata (arctic ambient) and Shenzhou (warm ambient based on Debussy) are great.

Dropsonde, Cho Oyu 8201m (as Geir Jenssen) and both releases with Higher Intelligence Agency are also really good. Autour de la Lune is nice, but only when in the right mood (it's surprisingly minimal and austere). N-Plants and L'Incoronazione di Poppea were disappointing.

I'll listen to Cirque and Patashnik next.
