Hey /mu/tants,
I'm having an art gallery opening in January and right now I'm going to be crafting a playlist for the event. Originally the plan was to create a playlist consisting of mostly hip hop because I live in an urban area and a big chunk of the people that will be attending listen to hip hop. But I want to expand the music genres within the playlist. I come to you guys in search of some good music for my gallery opening. I'm open to all kinds of musical suggestion there are no limits.

Get James Ferraro to compose an entire soundtrack for you.

I made a list for a friend having a photoshoot. It went over pretty well, mainly because the photographer was seriously into hip-hop but was open to other stuff.

This is pretty good right here. Thanks man!

if i went to an art gallery and there was hip hop playing i'd walk straight out the door. get some ambient or something

100% onkyo soundtrack. The extremely quiet, "is there even anything playing" kind. Or just don't play anything, pretty much the same thing.

David Bowie's 1970s run (with the exception of Young Americans and Lodger) produced the GOAT art gallery music. Especially the instrumentals from the Berlin stuff.

Alternately, do Eno.
>>
Having music playing in the background is extremely disruptive to the experience, and sounds like it would be disrespectful to the artists, who likely didn't intend to place their art in such a context.
>>
play quite instrumental music in the background. some of the quieter Do Make Say Think songs would be fine.

or you could play nothing.

playing hip hop is a terrible idea unless it is an exhibit of really amateur art.

play something that won't be a distraction but isn't completely ignorable

examples:

etc etc. classical music (chamber or solo piano) is probably your safest bet outside of playing nothing, which may be preferred depending on the context

Mussorgsky's pictures at an exhibition, obviously

All the people telling you that nothing should be played have probably never been to an opening. A gallery opening is much more of a social event than a place to experiente art. Its a place to talk to artists, critics, curators and meet people and estabilish contacts.
