Well fuck I didn't see this thread and made my own, I'm retarded. Been fucking jamming out to these bands lately, me and my friend cant decide what the best metal album of 2014 is yet. its between these choices:
Alterbeast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umBATwrpQ9I

Soreption: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLN016ZKB_E

JFAC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayvKDxoVCcI

Beyond Creation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--ubJ062_PE

For me id say either Soreption or Alterbeast. Soreption improved a lot since they're 2010 album. But god damn that alterbeast though. My friend says its JFAC's sun eater. Not to say its a bad album but none of the songs really stand out.

I think the main reason most of those tech deathcore bands are utter shit is because of the focus on being faster and more technical than the guys before them and are willing to throw away most of their musicality to play even 10 bpm faster.

I think any genre with technical in front of it is going to end up with a lot of cancer.

Immolation are decidedly mediocre to me. I think the best tracks on that album however are Into Everlasting Fire, Those Left Behind, and Immolation. But even with those tracks, i'd still much rather to listen to some other Death Metal band. The absolutely flat production just murders the listening experience...and the lack of captivating riffs. Even though I sort of do enjoy the vocals, they get rather grating after a while because of being essentially monotone.

Holy fuck, look at this faggot.

I wonder what kind of death metal you don't find boring, if you find Immolation boring.

That band has moved death metal to new planes. From the exclusive aggressive rapid fire intensity music with horror lyrics, to the mystic and intricate, heavy-on-atmosphere metal.

yeah, I can't really get into much black metal so it kinda sucks.

I think Death Metal should take a step back from all the ridiculous overtly technical shit for a while so the genre can get back in touch with its sloppy, gritty as fuck roots.

>i.e. less Origin/Necrophagist and more early Autopsy/early Cannibal Corpse/Possessed and Brutality.

>>
>>52328100
>more larger than death metal
>all the way back in the late 80s

outside of Bathory and the other first wave groups (who don't really sound all that black metal to current listeners), black metal wasn't even nearly as big as death, thrash and grindcore.

It wasn't until at least 1992 when black metal really started to pick up some major steam if you ask me.

So much this.
Luckily bm as a genre is pretty much immune for those overly wanky kids.
Death metal and also progressive metal have really been ruined by kids who just want to play faster for the sake of being faster than the rest.

>>52328169
It's a shame that it's become very hard to find new bm bands that sound like early Bathory or To Mega Therion from Celtic Frost.

BABYMETAL NO.1
>>
>>52330629
Yet even their non-experimental early albums were pretty strange for black metal at the time, being one of the first bands to incorporate keyboards into black metal and having guitar solos and more of a doom/NWOBHM style of riffing rather than tremolos and a focus on atmosphere that most other second wave bands did at the time.
>>
>>52330704
>>52330767

I don't know what to tell you guys. Sigh used to make black metal, and they did so in a more straightforward fashion than the random crap they make now. I didn't say their early stuff wasn't experimental, I said it wasn't the lolsorandum garbage they make now. It is possible to be experimental, especially in the early development of a scene or genre, without having to use saxophones and female vocals and jazz time signatures.

>>52330613
But I just want to know what it's like to have a girlfriend.

Modern Sigh is garbage, I agree with you there, and they did use to make a lot more straightforward metal but for 1993 Scorn Defeat was strange for black metal at the time. their only good albums are their first 3 anyways and that one power metal album, everything else is garbage.

nope you are just a pleb fuck

This album is way beyond the conceived notion of how metal, or music, should be. In Essence it is a movie without pictures; a celluloid phantasmagoria. Accordingly, the film jumps, and another scene, seemingly unconnected with the previous context, is suddenly inserted in between frames. Every sound on this album is deliberate, and if you find that some parts of this album are strange, it isn't because the music is in itself strange, but because your conscious self is ill-equipped to comprehend the sounds produced on this recording.

>>
When you think of it, Sigh isn't really lolsorandom, they're just bizarre and use strange instrumentation. everything they do generally fits the theme of each respective album they have, hardly random at all.

>>52332438
>>52332524
Sigh's one of the only good avantgarde metal bands, because they don't rely on the eclectic genre-mashing gimmick as hard as some shittier bands, they actually know how to write killer riffs and don't pretend to be "above" metal like most avantgarde bands think or act like they are.

But if you remove the thing about good riffs, you've just described Sigh...
>>
>>52332653
Their riffs really are great, at least in their first 6 albums. They're catchy and fun and almost wreak of 70s and 80s cheesiness that you see in NWOBHM bands.

also what sets them apart from other avant-meal is that they combine genres so naturally, whereas other avant-meal makes the combined genres seem tacked on for the sake of being eclectic.

They're fun and catchy, but still take themselves seriously enough to the point it doesn't seem like a joke, that's generally why people like them. It's a refreshing take on black metal, but it's also one of the few good takes on avantgarde metal.

>>

Not really, they combine genres into the song when they feel like it adds to the song, rather than combining genres for the sake of being stalk full of genres for the sake of looking eclectic.

Every "random" genre they put into the song is only there for the sake of progressing the song, not to show off that they put a jazz/classical interlude in the middle of a blackened thrashy doom metal song ;^)

you aren't going to convince that guy and besides even though its ones of my alltime favorite albums I can see how some of the genre fuckery on Imaginary Soniscape can seem over the top or forced to someone who isn't a fan.

spot on with the riffs though

Honestly, probably not. That album is fucking god tier. Riffs out the asshole.
>>
>>52330644
I'm the same fuckhead that said they are mediocre. The only songs I really care about on that album are Lost Passion and the title track.

Which are really good slabs of death metal to me. I'm not saying they are bad or anything, they just don't really do anything for me. I remember finding it difficult to differentiate some of the songs on that album from each other. It was just fucking relentless blasts/double bass the entire time with average riffs.

Pick an sub-genre and tell us what band got you "into" it

Death Metal for me was Bolthrower
Black Metal was Bathory
>>
>>52340141
Black metal for me was Burzum I guess.
War was the first bm song I've ever heard.

Bathory is best bm though
>>
>>52340141
Death metal was cannibal corpse with the bleeding (their only completely good album)
Black metal was burzum with dunkelheit
>>
What is the best depressive black metal? For reference I really love Nocturnal Poisoning by Xasthur.

depressive bm/blackgaze

Hope this is what you're looking for.

I think it's a solid release, but it's not all that depressing. Verwustung did the depression better IMO.

I would make one man metal, but I only play drums. I have no formal musical training either.

I suppose I could be the first band that programs guitars and plays actual drums.
>>
>>52340141
Death Metal was a combination of the Chris Barnes Cannibal Corpse albums, Possessed's Seven Churches and Scream Bloody Gore

Not really into Black Metal though, although I fuckin' love Impaled Nazarene.
