That's impossible. If you like mainstream music just pick the ones that get the least hate. As long as it's not Nickelback or whatever the current most popular thing to hate is, they won't care.
Whenever people ask what I mean by more "obscure" music I just say it's mostly indie stuff and old rock music. If they want to see, I just show them things like Radiohead, Bjork, Portishead, NMH, Pink Floyd, Slowdive, Cocteau Twins or dreampop in general, and indie rock bands. I generally keep shit like noise, drone and the more experimental music to myself.
If you listen to a bunch of different genres and you wanna look cool, just say the things that that person looks like they might want to hear. For example if they're an obvious metalhead they won't want to hear you talk about Sufjan Stevens or whatever, if you know what I mean. Or just ask them first what kind they like if you can't tell yourself, and then work on it from then. What's so fucking hard?

If they don't have any idea what the fuck you're talking about, then either give a short explanation or talk about something else. They asked you what you like, so they can't fault you for responding.
The only thing to consider is to try and avoid just mentioning a bunch of obscure bands by name. If you're gonna do that, you might be better off listing genres, but again, it's not a big deal.
