not OP but related
I want to get into synths and all that but I'm not sure if I won't realize it's not for me after a couple of months. is it safer for me to buy a midi keyboard for now?
>>
>>51942316
Yes but you will npr really get the real fun of synthesis out of it imo

What about the Korg MS20?

I've had a MIDI Controller for about two years and it's extremely inconvenient. Software synths sound too plastic (currently using Massive, open for software synth recommendations as well) and I really want to invest into a proper synthesizer. I want to make a lot of crazy abstract weird sounds or whatever, what would be a good choice? I mean I understand that you probably have to try them out, but I'll at least look em up online for starters.
>>
>>51942314
These. Best fucking options
>>
>>51942314
thank you, anon.
>>
>>51942257
>tfw no prophet
>>51942410
My MS20 mini is pretty nice. It's not the thickest synth, I find that it's actually pretty thin. It has this quality of thiness though that a softsynth wouldn't match. It's like a really brittle laserbeam. I think it's because I'm not using an echo pedal with it. It's pretty nice, but the filter makes a ton of noise, since they didn't update it from the 70s version.
>>
>>51942408
alright I'll think about it
also, since I know fuck all about it, what else do I need to record a synth(apart from synth of course)? Like, can I plug it directly into the computer and work like this?
>>
>>51942477
I think you need an audio interface. I'm not sure I record onto tape.
>>
>>51942477
You need a sound card, check out the scarlet seriea, its gud
>>
>>51942477
Get a USB interface (Thunderbolt > USB3 > Firewire > USB2), you'll be much more flexible and they are good, too.
>>
>>51942979
sorry, I meant external interface.
>>
>>51942469
The filter is the best part about the ms20

>Software synths sound too plastic
I don't think that's really the problem.

>I want to make a lot of crazy abstract weird sounds or whatever, what would be a good choice?
Evolver, or Kurzweil K2000 for expert mode.
>>
>>51943115
>Kurzweil K2000 for expert mode

this

vast is nuts
>>
>>51943095
I can see the appeal of the filter, but I don't like it that much other than the fact that it's 2 filters instead of one multimode filter. The way it starts resonating is annoying with the tiny knobs on the mini. The mini sounds 99% like the original, but it really sucks to use because of the knobs.

I made the bloops in this track with my mod

You could put a real big knob on there if you wanted to.

Actually thats a hilarious idea.
>>
>>51943158
This is really fucking neat. I've been trying to put stuff like this together. What drum sounds are you using?
>>
>>51942257
SH-201
Alpha Juno (1 or 2, your choice)
Xiosynth
>>
>>51943214
Just a drum rack I made in ableton a while ago

I'm gonna cop a tr-8 or machine drum for Xmas tho. If I go Roland route I'll cop a 909 clap module because the clap on the tr-8 is a piece of shit.

The drums are just put through some reverb ping pong and compressor

Could someone explain how does one achieve a sound like that? Is it a hardware synth? What about the distortion/noise sounds?

I hear a lot of sample manipulation and pitch shifting.

Guys I got really high last night and had this thought -

So yeah

These days look for a loaded K2500 w/KDFX, the price difference isn't that much and the KDFX board is much, much better than the original digitech fx. If you just want cheap cheap find a K2000VX, that'll have all the ROMs from factory. K2661 is the best bang for your buck and a great form factor but they're still almost a grand, they didn't make many before they got discontinued. :/
>>
>>51944444
it's actually more like subtractive synthesis

larynx as oscillator (generating glottal pulses) and airway, mouth, etc. as filters, plus noise and transients

>>
>>51945236
I think you've got its bases covered already by the K1/TG33. If you're looking for another Kawai from the era, I'd grab an XD-5, which is basically a K4 with drum partials instead. Great box.
>>
>>51946109
heres the page http://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/120450

rene is wonderful have it it playing like a mpc/keyboard most of the time since i dont have a clock to sync

the sequncer is pretty indepth and can get swing to it if you do it right.
>>
>>51946027
no prob. In hardware synths, volcas should be your next purchase after a monotron
>>
>>51942257
provided you're still here OP, u-he DIVA has superb analog modelling (if you have the compute power for it) It really sounds amazing despite being as soft synth. You might as well get that and a decent hardware midi controller
>>
Should I get a microKORG or a miniNova?
I want as much synthesis options as possible, I don't want a preset machine
>>
>>51945896
what can a midi controller do that a DAW can't do? could you post a video as an example of the possibilities of a controller? also how much would a cheap but decet one cost?
>>
>>51946471
>I want as much synthesis options as possible

save, go analog. get a polyvoks.
>>
>>51946203
not a bad idea, i'll keep my eyes peeled for one
>>

then don't get either
>>
>>51946471
Novation Mininova for sure.
>>
>>51946515

I meant between the two. I understand both are very preset heavy but I want whichever one allows you to tweak those presets more than the other
>>
>>51946484
Nigga

MidiControlers Control parameters in a daw.

All a daw does is house vsts and sounds and control parameters vsts

Midi controllers let you actually play your instruments as oppoosed to sitting infront of a computer and typing.

TL;DR

Better interface but you need a daw to properly use the midi controller

You can build one for under $30. At least a basic one with multiple oscillators.
>>
where do you guys get vintage synths that aren't available on places like amazon or sweetwater?
Just ebay, or is there like a synth marketplace I don't know about
>>
I bought a Yamaha TX-81 Z last year. They have a great sound, are versatile and usually cost under 100 dollar. But it's an FM synth which means that it's hard to program, you can't really edit it live and it doesn't have that warm fuzzy analog sound.
I am very content with mine.
>>
>>51947026
How?
>>
Question:

Should I get the Microbrute, MicroKORG or Novation BassStation II as a first synth.

Money is a matter, but I want quality.

The KORG's appeal is polysynth, microbrute's is price, and BassStation II's is high reviews.

Which is best as a first/general-purpose synth?
