Sure, there's good, interesting, and even experimental VGM, it's just exceedingly rare. Especially around the SNES era due to the timbrel restrictions the soundchips had, a lot of great compositions have been made for vidya that otherwise never could have been created.
But on that note, I fucking hate music that tries to replicate VGM like chiptunes, as well as people who think they're cultured because they listen to vaguely orchestral video game music.
I don't even know why people get defensive about soundtrack music.
It's music.
/mu/ also loves non-musical things like bandcamp-tier noise projects and field recordings that take very little effort to make.
At least video game soundtracks require some modicum of effort, especially with older games.
