On The Sunday of life?
That's universally considered their worst album yet Scaruffi considers it their best

Funny thing though is that when I was young and I got into PT I loved their prg metal phase the most while now, I prefer their psychedelic/pop-rock one
>>
>>51780678
Actually it wasn't their debut. Silly me. I listened to Up the Downstair.
>>
>>51780704
It's incredible how much better it is compared to debut, instead of being just a collection of random songs and tons of filler, this was made as a true band and as such it's much more cohesive, Synesthesia, Always Never and Burning Sky are incredible tracks.

>>
>>51781216

>>
>>51780854
Wankery is the indiefag word for being exceptionally good at your instrument and song writing right?
>>
>>51781253
Yeah I used to think that but the only think they have going for them are their melodies, which get really annoying after more than one listen. Even Beyond Man and Time, which was one of my favourite albums of the year in 2012, now rubs me the wrong way. Their solos are some of the worst I have ever heard
>>
>>51781272
No, I first heard the term from prog fans actually. It's technicality that doesn't add to the music in any way other than to show off
>>
>>51781272
Yes, theey probably consider Bach wank as well

>>51781283

For Hero For Fool.jpg
103 KB, 480x480
Progressive post-rap-rock counts too right?
>>
>>51781321
If you mean the really neo-prog synthy synths, then pretty much al the notable neo bands use them better. Pendragon and IQ are the best that are still around.
>>
>>51781307
But it's expanded much beyond that definition. People call King Crimson wankery. Fuck, people call PINK FLOYD wankery. People call anything with any sort of technicality wankery.
>>
>>51781307
King Crimson do have some of that, but there are certainly far worse offenders both inside and outside the realm of prog rock.
>>
>>51781367
Yeah but literally every negative musical descriptor gets blown out of proportion by some people. King Crimson do have a good wank every now an then though.
>>
>>51781405
They get technical, but I wouldnt call it wankery. I cant think of a single moment in King Crimsons catalog that got too technical for its own good.
>>
>>51781394
>far worse offenders both inside and outside the realm of prog rock.
ELP

Honestly every djent band, ever.

Although some of them are stopping, recent albums from Tesseract and Skyharbour have been relatively wank-free
>>
>>51781428
Animals As Leaders are an instrumental tech prog band, so I feel like they lack the pretentious element necessary for them to be called wankery.
Same with LTE. Those types of bands are really just skilled musicians having some fun.
Stuff like Dream Theater is certified wankery though, because they always try to work in some contrived story.

GOAT
>>
>>51781511
New tesseract sounds like Muse
>>
>>51781517
Hmm no I think you're missing the point of the term, it's not just "bad prog", it's specifically show-off instrumentalism that is really just key-mashing (or string-mashing) with no relation to key, time or melody. AAL are the fucking definition.

DT's solo sections from like 2000 onwards are also the definition though, especially Rudess' keyboard solos.
>>
>>51781517
>contrived story
>wankery
What you are talking about is pretention. Wankery is basically extreme displays of musicianship that don't really work from a song-writing perspective. Every single band you listed is guilty of wankery, but not because they make (shitty) concept albums.
>>
>>51781531
I know it's great

I for one am glad djent is dying and becoming Muse
>>
>>51781543
I don't know man. I think of AAL as more of a jam band, which I guess is typically wank to at least a certain extent.

>>
>>51781428
Is Haken and Leprous wankery done right?
>>
>>51780590
I don't know if I consider The Reign of Kindo prog. They are one of my fav bands, though.
>>
>>51781548
But that's what I'm saying.
If a band's only thing is instrumental complexity, then it's not really wank because it's not unnecessarily added to any sort of emotional or conceptual context.
>>
>>51781426
I'd say their last two albums get a bit too technical at times.
>>
>>51781567
They have absolutely no groove or rhythm or band chemistry so no they aren't a jam band

>>51781576
Mostly, although with Haken in particular they do push my buttons a bit with their god damn lelsorandom solos. Leprous rarely though, I think they're 99% solid.

>>51781582
The point of that chart is for not-really-prog-but-sort-of stuff.

>>51781595
Well, if a band's only thing is instrumental complexity, then they are an objectively bad band and not worth our time discussing
>>

>Well, if a band's only thing is instrumental complexity, then they are an objectively bad band and not worth our time discussing
I feel you, but I must disagree. I much prefer the cathartic complexity of Hella or Yowie to the contrived songwriting of Dream Theater or Pain Of Salvation.
I think that calculated intensity can sometimes convey a lot more emotion.
>>
>>51781726
The Faust Tapes is amazing though, as is Munich & Elsewhere.

you are not contributing with posts like this
>>
>>51781857
There is definitely worse fusion.
Mahavishnu actually had pretty good chemistry.
Romantic Warrior and Elegant Gypsy are both way more excessive.
>>
>>51781595
No, that would make it purely wank. It doesn't matter what the band is trying to accomplish. The question is: does this sound okay? Does this make sense in the context of the song? Are these guys just showing off? If the answer is yes, then it is wank, regardless of what their goal is.
>>
>>51781829
Nah. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum are one of the best prog metal bands.
POS is just a POS.
>>
Do you think The Raven Thar Refused To Sing is on par with Porcupine Tree's albums?
>>
>>51781967
It's better than The Incident, but Wilson is such a limp songwriter.
He was at his best with No-Man.
>>
>>51781920
but i like romantic warrior
>>
>>51782042
But somehow not Mahavishnu Orchestra?
Literally what the fuck?
>>
>>51781753
Yeah but if a band has "calculated intensity", then they probably have a good balance between soft and loud, manic and calm, which is something other than wankery

>>51781863
Yeah they're the only ones that are more prog than alt-rock. It's really just a chart for finding similar albums, all of them have prog elements to different levels

>>51781967
Definitely, above all but Deadwing and FOABP for me. (but Insurgentes is still best solo album)
>>
>>51782012
>He was at his best with No-Man.

I thought we unanimously agreed that No-Man was Wilson's shittiest project?

l'araignée-mal, by atoll
>>
>>51781428
ELP really?
Emerson parts are always very melodic and pleasant to hear, they might be fast and hard to play but that doesn't mean he does that to show off
>>
>>51782131
Nah. No-Man it sort of an acquired taste, but Bass Communion is shittier.
In any case, there is a ton of really beautiful instrumental and production work on Returning Jesus, Together We're Stranger and Flowermouth.
No-Man also draws influence from a lot of bands, from King Crimson to Talk Talk.
>>
hey, what modern prog rock albums would you guys suggest for someone who's into older prog rock but hasn't listened to much newer stuff. I /have/ heard The Raven That Refused to Sing and I loved that but what others are out there that I'm missing?
>>
>>51781857
inner mountain and birds of fire are great and not wankery at all. i am very curious to what you ahve to say about some one like coltrane if you call mclaughlin a wanker
>>
This brings up another question: is it physically possible to play fast and complex parts on an organ without it sounding like wankery?

Piano and guitar (at least acoustic guitar) are generally okay for fast parts, but pretty much every time an organ solo gets going I cringe endlessly. All the notes just blur into each other until its a corny mess of warbling wankery.
>>
>>51782220
Kingston Wall. Not as modern, but not to be missed out on either.
>>
>>51781898
then there's this handy feature called "image search"
>>
>>51782073
Romantic warrior at least sounds like they play together.

Mahavishnu to me seems like a great band came together to make great fusion. then after that's done some drugged up selfish guitar player recorded his playing over that to "show them how it's really done"
>>
>>51782217
I feel a great deal of my distaste for No-Man is Bowness. I just think his voice is so draining, the same reason I can't into a lot of gothic rock/darkwave. I have given them a lot of time but they seriously bore the fuck out of me, even more than Bass Communion. And I usually love Wilson's slow dreary emotional stuff

>>51782220
Do you want stuff that sounds like older prog or stuff that's actually good.

If you don't like metal or alternative rock you're going to have a hard time finding stuff in modern prog that's good, but if you do then it's basically endless. I'd recommend starting with Oceansize, Porcupine Tree and Riverside, they're pretty much considered the best/most influential

What do you think of this version?
>>
>>51782540
We've had this discussion before, if anything's going to replace it, it would be III, but I is far more concise, and gets through most of their styles in a very short time.

II, in my honest opinion, is overlong and frankly dull for a lot of its length.

Today I found out the father of my partner is a huge Yes fan and played the full Fragile album (among other things) through the turntable he bought today.

This week I have been enjoying Echolyn and Closure in Moscow a lot. Both are some kind of explosive/hyperactive/ambitious Prog. If you are into that kind of stuff, check them out!

I'm fairly new to prog, since I'm working my way up from the late 60s. Maybe you guys have heard it all, I don't know, but here's some tracks that I liked or would at least listen to again out of interest...

(Uriel) Arzachel- Garden of Earthly Delights
(Egg) Egg- Fugue in D Minor, Boilk, Symphony No. 2
(Egg) Polite Force- A Visit to Newport Hospital, Long Piece No. 3 (Part 2)
(Soft Machine) Volume Two
(King Crimson) The Court of the Crimson King, Cat Food
(Fields) A Friend of Mine, Over and Over Again, The Eagle
(Khan) Space Shanty- Stranded
(Hatfield and the North) Son of 'There's no Place like Homerton'
(Rare Bird) Iceberg, Times, You Went Away, Beautiful Scarlet
(Rare Bird) Epic Forest- Baby Listen, Her Darkest Hour, Title No. 1 Again, Roadside Welcome

Also, if you know of any 60s-70s prog bands that are above and beyond, let me know and I'll have a listen.
