some great 2014 jazz
as the title suggests it's only nouvelle vague movies themes (which are often pretty jazzy by themselves) and one or two songs

David Virelles- Mbókò: Sacred Music for Piano, Two Basses, Drum Set and Biankoméko Abakuá (2014)

>modern creative, spiritual jazz, Afro-Cuban
>Pianist David Virelles takes influence from his native land of Cuba and translates the traditional music of the Abakuá religion and interprets it with modern jazz sensibilities, producing music that sounds both traditional and sacred, and adventurous and modern. Between the dark harmony of the piano, the two double-basses, and the unique timbre of the Biankoméko drum, this is a very innovative and original record.

Do you guys think there is a lack of light hearted performers in modern jazz? There's a lot of good music being put out but I find myself gravitating more towards people like Dizzy Gillespie who were really amiable in the way they played and presented themselves.
It doesn't even have to be upbeat just that there doesn't seem to be as much playfulness.

Fusion like this is kinda in a weird place. This is very funk influenced and I'd be sooner to call it that than jazz. Funk has never had a problem with being too serious.
>>51734200
Never heard of this before but the cover makes me suspicious. What's it like?
>>
>>51734150
Nah. On certain record labels like ECM there definitely is, but even then there are some artists who don't take their music too seriously like Dave Holland or Paul Motion who recorded on ECM. In general I just see ECM as a serious artistic label where musicians record their ambitious and serious ideas. A lot of ECM artists also record on other labels with lighter ideas.
>>
>>51734318
Listen away. Allegedly, Moppa Elliot (bass) was inspired by 1970s/1980s smooth jazz and the album transpired from that.

>>
>>51734367
Where else is good? I usually go for ECM and sometimes Criss Cross for modern stuff if I'm not looking for a particular artist.
>>51734380
Ha, this is class. The drums are fucking all over the place.
>>
Can someone recommend some very fast, chaotic bebop? Just picked up "For Musicians Only" with Getz, Stitt, and Gillespie but need more.
>>
>>51734448
I loved that record. The soloing is mad in it. The soloists are always going in such abstract directions away from the structure but the bass and drums do a great job of anchoring the whole thing. Everyone just felt so under pressure during the recordings and it came across in the soloing because they all sound so frantic which fits really well with the way Dizzy writes tunes.
If you've just picked it up I'd spend a while listening to it. Like give it a while to sink in and then try out Kenny Dorham - Whistle Stop
Not quite as intense as For Musicians only but a really nice bebop album that goes from really angular and out there stuff to a bit more straightforward. Really nice drumming that probably goes towards what you're looking for.
>>
>>51734415

>>
>>51734680
You don't know what you're talking about. There were plenty of serious and 'elitist' jazz records being made even back into the 50's.

There's still some jazz that's serious and artistic but there's plenty that's fun and doesn't take itself to seriously too. Go see some live jazz.
>>
To all the people who ENJOYYYY this music... I have said it before, I will say it again, but this is the last time I will say it. This is crap. This is not real. I also like more "serious" jazz, but why does ALL of it has to be so serious all the time? I mean, jazz musician are usually light hearted people, it's a shame they don't reflect it on their art.
>>
>>51735004

You really have no idea what you're talking about, man. Go to mikesmastersclasses.com and watch some videos. Tell me if those folks are elitist dickheads or not.
>>
>>51735004
things got intellectualized by pretentious try-hards like monk and mingus. it's no coincidence both wore funny hats. of course there's lots of jazz that is entertaining and has artistic merit.
>>
>>51735084
lol, i'm not saying that all jazz is elitisitc. Just that it became more elitistic and serious over time.

Like i said before, Jazz musicians are usually light hearted and funny people, but it's a shame that they almost never (almost) reflect it with their art.

And jazz schools are definitely pretty elitistic, from my experience atleast.
>>
>>51735141

What are you even trying to say? That you wish light hearted people made light hearted jazz? Why? What the fuck does that even mean?

From your experience in jazz school? I went to jazz school, did you?
>>
>>51735141
>And jazz schools are definitely pretty elitistic, from my experience atleast.

Music schools can be like that. It's not just a jazz thing. Classical can be just as bad.
>>
>>51735219
All music schools are elitist in some way. The best of the best are going to be extra competitive.
>>
>>51735098
Except that they had really playful music too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcR2Q_teVM4
Mingus usually sounded like he was having a blast when he was playing and wrote and played his material to be really enjoyable.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxailNkhpXs
Monk did too in his own kinda odd syncopated, idiosyncratic way.
People were playing this music academically before them though so I wouldn't go around blaming them just because they were influential and often took their playing seriously.

>>
>jazz school

that's the problem right there. in the good ol' days of jazz music, there were no jazz schools. you'd start out in a high school band, if you had money, go to music school. but most of the real learning was done one the road.

jazz school... fuckin hell.
>>
>>51735195
I'm saying that people should reflect their personality on their art.

And not only i went to a jazz school, i visited a lot of them too. And it always felt like everybody took Jazz why more seriously than they should.
>>
>>51735237
It's really not that I'm pissed off, it's that I just think what you're saying (that it's a "shame" that more light-hearted people don't make more light-hearted jazz) is totally nonsensical. What do you want, man? If you want to listen to Sunday brunch jazz, fucking do it. There are hundreds of jazz musicians out there doing exactly that because that's what they want to do. There are more musicians out there than 10 dudes from the 60s, you know.
>>
>>51735272
yessssss! this is what i mean! Jazz schools ruined the cool image that jazz used to have. Now people just look at jazz like it's some boring old people music.
>>
>>51735229
That's mostly true. I like to think my school is pretty inclusive of non classical/jazz music. However I feel like if my school was more selective and serious about our players' skill levels things could be a lot better.

>>51735272
Times have changed. You really need to be a solid player to get gigs these days. There aren't too many of them and there some really good players out there who want even the crappier gigs cause they need the money.
>>
Could any of you people who've actually studied jazz recommend a rock bassist some good ways to transition over to jazz?
I know scales and how to construct chords quite well and I can play along aptly to a lot of simpler blues stuff but I find it hard to figure out a lot of the chords to bebop tunes by ear.
Could people maybe rec some standards that are easy enough to learn and play?

>Could people maybe rec some standards that are easy enough to learn

There are plenty of good resources on this for youtube. The biggest thing for me was learning how to play within form.

That and transcribing what other people are doing. It sounds stupid, but Mel Bay has a lot of good books. You'll need to learn how to read music but if you are looking to transition, there is an abundance of information. Just need to choose which methodology works best for you.
>>
>>51735407
Go download the real book and start playing some tunes. As a bassist you're gonna have to be able to play the head of the song, do a walking bass line over the changes and then solo over the changes. Walking is gonna be your biggest challenge for a while especially when you start playing tunes with harder changes.

>>
>>51735430
Lol this was actually one of the like 3 standards I have learned. I do like that it's really easy to fit in chormatisism and still keep it really fluid but I often find myself sticking too close to the shapes of the chords. Like I'm thinking "now I'm playing over the Cmaj7 and now the Dmaj7" without a lot of thought as to moving between the two really smoothly.
>>51735447
I haven't done any transcribing but I have heard that helps. Thing is, I don't have a huge amount of theory. I'm not classically trained so beyond noticing that something doesn't belong to a progression I don't think I'd actually be able to asses what I was transcribing. I can tentatively read music though so there's that.
>>51735495
>Go download the real book and start playing some tunes.
Will do. Most of the stuff I have been playing hasn't been too strenuous but I've not had a huge amount of trouble keeping up walking bass lines. I'm pretty strong rhythmically.
>>
for those in jazz school: do kids exclusively listen to 1960's (and later) jazz these days? or is there still some respect and interest for louis armstrong, lester young, coleman hawkins, roy eldridge etc. Are those greats of old still being taught at all?

Of course not. Bebop, swing and hard-bop are the styles that are really taught at jazz school. Pre-bop and bebop are probably what are studied the most. Most schools don't even really get into jazz after the early 60's. As for what the students listen to... It's a mixed bag. I know jazz students who don't listen to almost anything modern and I know some who really keep up with everything coming out now.
