Tempo is already somewhat arbitrary, can't really count along or do the mental maths on the spot.

Deciding to be a special little snowflake by writing crap like 7/9 is silly and pointless, it's 7/8 with a bit of doubt.

You can get a machine to do it, but a person never could accurately.
>>51392580
That's the definition you used?

At least clarify that, 70/8 is an odd signature because it is never really used.
3/4 is an odd signature because 3%2 gives us a non-integer.

I meant violin/ cello or full orchestra in modern music

I'm only into half of those.

Many operas are modern, see:>>51391252

Maybe I should've said contemporary

I like Woodkid.
the second one i don't know. Thanks!

>Have you ever played an instrument?
Yes. Piano for two years.

>Tempo is already somewhat arbitrary
Tempo is not arbitrary since it can be measured with a chronometer.

>7/9 is silly and pointless, it's 7/8 with a bit of doubt.
They are different things, you like it or not.

>You can get a machine to do it, but a person never could accurately.
Yes, a person can do it. Have you ever heard of Ferneyhough?

>>51392873
I know! Love those cute melodies!

Contemporary is everything since the middle ages.
>>51392913
>Yes. Piano for two years.
So you're incompetent.
>Tempo is not arbitrary since it can be measured with a chronometer.
Tempo is entirely arbitrary, it's impossible to be exact.

Verbal cues are far better than exact BPM.
>They are different things, you like it or not.
Not to the reader, to the reader it's 7/8 with some doubt.
>Yes, a person can do it. Have you ever heard of Ferneyhough?
Not accurate, nobody could play it on the spot
>>
>>51393025
What are you trying to say?

>>51393051
>So you're incompetent.
Nice assumption.
>Tempo is entirely arbitrary, it's impossible to be exact.
That goes for everything. Not even science is exact.
>Verbal cues are far better than exact BPM.
That' subjective. Time signatures are not.
>Not to the reader, to the reader it's 7/8 with some doubt.
>with some doubt.
That's ridiculous. Saying that is like saying that 4/4 is the same as 4/2 but slower.
>Not accurate, nobody could play it on the spot
Yes, they can (if we are talking about the 7/9 time signature).
>>
>>51393051
>Contemporary is everything since the middle ages.
Fine.
What do you call this era we're in RIGHT NOW?
Not even 2000, but 2010+. Music from whatever era this is.
>>
>>51393051
con·tem·po·rar·y (kn-tmp-rr)
adj.
1. Belonging to the same period of time: a fact documented by two contemporary sources.
2. Of about the same age.
3. Current; modern: contemporary trends in design.

>That's ridiculous. Saying that is like saying that 4/4 is the same as 4/2 but slower.
I've been a musician since you were around 4, I know this.
>Not even science is exact.
Science is glorified empiricism.
Mathematics is exact, everything can be reduced to axioms and proven via higher level mathematics that is based on axioms.
>Time signatures are not.
>time signatures are not related to tempii
Confirmed for incompetent musician.
7/8 and 7/9 only have superficial differences, signatures like 6/8 and 3/4 are technically the same but are played different
>>51393148
We're not in a different era
>>51393196
The proper musical definition?
'old fashioned' music exists before the popular era, all music in the popular era is contemporary.
>>
>>51393399
I already know them, but I'm not a big fan. I think they use asian instrumentation in a gimmicky way, like Within Temptation uses the orchestra, and that the metal part is too generic.

Thanks for trying though!

Anon talked about modern music. I don't know by which definition you could call pre-20th century music modern.

>popular era
What are you even talking about?

>contrast of dissonance and melody
>high-register harsh vocals (so no growls)
>syncopated rhythms

But it's true, we're in the modern era of humanity, same is true with the late, electrified 1800s.
>>51393620
>I don't know by which definition you could call pre-20th century music modern
All proper definitions, modern music has existed since the 1850s and 1860s.
>What are you even talking about?
Of music, think of it as a thought web.

We have the popular era, and eras like Baroque and Gothic branching from it.

The popular era branches off of the western art music timeline, which branches off of western music, which branches off of music.
