ITT: the many roots of the punk rock movement.

The Sonics: Created the garage rock sound: gravelly vocals, pushed distortion to the max. Them drums. Est. 1960.

The Velvets: New York heroin/drug scene. Still very heady/Bob Dylan influenced. Pic related further pushed the punk rock sound with fuzzed guitars, chaotic sonic experience. Est: 1964

my pre-70s "Hard Rock" chart.
Great thread so far, sorry for cluttering it up a bit, but I can't imagine this hitting the bump limit

I think that Subterranean Homesick Blues, Maggie's Farm, Like A Rolling Stone, Positively 4th Street, Outlaw Blues and a bunch of Dylan songs are all protopunk.

The Stooges.
The guitar hits like a punch in the face. Relentless drum beats that pound underneath Iggy Pop's flailing, drug addled yelps and screams. Listen for the cocaine snort halfway through TV Eye. If you don't have a black eye by the end of Fun House, you're doing it wrong. Est. Ann Arbor 1968.

What about 'Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey' by the Beatles? I think if John wasn't in the Beatles, he could have easily been in The Velvet Underground.

sad. I wish more people could discuss this topic. The whole rebel attitude shows itself in music long before The Ramones dawned a stage. All it's manifestations are fascinating to me.

The image of a musician as a rebel goes beyond the rock era.

Death: As progenitors of this genre they created in entirety, the musical schemes, lyrical, instrumental, and idiosyncratic innovations that comprise the punk rock standard. They are often inaccurately referred to as a "proto-punk" band and not more accurately, the nomenclature of "original punk" or simply "punk". The trio started out as a funk band but creatively developed the punk repertoire with themes of social justice and artistic aggression. The band broke up by 1977 but reformed in 2009 when the Drag City label released their 70s demos for the first time.

Est 1971.

Blues was called devil's music for a reason. It probably goes further than recorded music.
>>
>>51290490
I'm sure that has nothing to with race

>>51290445
Easiest off the top of my head is Woody Guthrie, the radical American patriot who defined music as a machine to kill fascists.
>>
>>51290516
It was called devils music primarily by black ministers.

Fuck, this is still your first year getting into music, isn't it?

>>51290553

Ah, excellent example.

Suicide: New York band featuring a batshit insane hispanic elvis impersonator on vocals and some nerd on both instruments-a synth and a primitive drum machine. proved punk was more about attitude and compositional minimalism than instrumentation. famous for their fucking psychotic live act and their even more fucked-up song "Frankie Teardrop"-an almost 10 minute long piece of absurdist horror shrieked over wispy (yet danceable) drum machine pulses and (literally) two synth bass notes. Followers of this band spread into both no wave and new wave.

The Beatles at the Hamburg club is their most protopunk stuff. The Germany years when they were playing at shady clubs and gay bars were their rowdiest and wildest years. Sadly only a few recording from this era exist.

The best anthology of these recordings, in terms of completeness and sound quality, is Purple Chick's "Live 01 - Star Club (Hamburg Germany - December 1962)"

It's the first two discs of this torrent:

How has this and The Rolling Stones not been mentioned?
>>
>>51290926

Rolling Stones are definitely a worthy mention. Just listen to anything on the Hot Rocks collection. This is polished garage rock.
>>
>>51289155
what makes you say that? if it's lyrical, i dont know if i buy it-- lots of music has and has had rebellious lyrics but only punk is punk. im willing to hear your argument though.

At this time The Killer's chance's of commercial success had been destroyed when the British press noticed his attractive young fiance was his 13 year old. cousin, freeing him up to go even more fucking crazy

Could be considered true. 'paranoid' is fast as fuuck, and written in the studio to make the record longer. That riff was by Iommi.
