My entire family is in the "I like it for the beat and happy melodies" camp, but it's fucking worse because my mother thinks she has amazing taste and is really big on music, but she listens to generic radio pop and one Van Morrison album (one of his live albums) non-stop. Not even kidding, this one Van Morrison live album has over 400 plays.
I knew this kid in high school who told me the only music he listened to was symphonies and The Beach Boys. He liked the symphonies for background, so I asked him why he only listened to the Beach Boys. He said all other music made you feel sad so why would you give it the time of day? Why would you intentionally make yourself sad?

She's described it as like a really bad headache, if I remember correctly it's either that it feels like her head is in a vice or that it's going to explode. I know those are polar opposites but I honestly can't exactly remember the way she described it, specifically. My personal theory about it is that since apparently sounds stop being musical at about 4000 Hz for the average person (hence why that's what the highest key on a piano reaches), she just has a really low threshold for discerning sounds as music.
