I figure it's because everyone who is into this shit found it out on their own/with minimal guidance. You hear something in a set, you track down it's name, you explore the label it was on, explore other artists on that same label, check out their stuff on other labels, repeat forever. Do that for a few years and you'll have built up a huge collection of music that only you like and that is specific to yourself, rather than just listening to recs someone gives you. With the first method you'll never run out of things to hear, with the second method once you stop getting recs then what are you going to listen to?
There might be an element of the fact that people in the old school days had to do this but IRL, which made shit ten times harder to keep up with, so people who don't want to find music like that now are just being lazy.
