What's the greatest ambient album of all time?
>>
I've only got one ambient album tbh, Oren Ambarchi - Grapes from the Estate. My opinion is that one.
>>
>>51183141
I would have to say that one OP
>>
>>51183141
The ones that combine noise and ambient are the best always.
>>
That's a great one.
My favorites are:
The Disintegration Loops
The Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid
Structures from Silence
The Nature of Nature

Ignore the inevitable "backpack ambient" faggots. They never have any real criticisms.

We'd get along. Download "Solo for Wounded CD" by Yasunao Tone and play it over any ambient album of your choosing. It instantly transforms the album into something much more. It's a really useful album on its own and paired with others.
>>
>>51183193
Do people actually think "backpack (genre)" is an actual criticism?

>>51183198
I laughed, I guess.

>>51183206
Interesting idea, never really paired any albums together like that, also I don't know how to do so in a computer, so that might have something to do with it.
>>
>>51183193
I haven't heard of The Nature of Nature but I love those other albums

I recommend it. It's one 70 minute long, shimmering drone. Really great music to exist in for a while. It's by JLIAT.

Just open it in youtube or a streaming service. It's really great. I recently did it with Ben Frost's "Steel Wound" and it was really nice.

You know, like a how a "backpacker" listens to underground or conscious hip hop as opposed to other kinds.

So I guess backpacker ambient would be like that, but I don't even know how the fuck people would classify ambient as conscious or underground.
>>
>>51183278
so in other words, it's meaningless and thrown around to insult people who stir insecurities in you with their taste in music
>>
>>51183294
Yeah, pretty much. Like the more hip hop version of calling something "hipster music".

Is anyone else into the Pop Ambient series? It's a shame they're not on the archive

I know 'P4k-core ambient' is frowned upon but honestly, I've never heard anything else that even comes close to the beauty of this album.

I have most of his stuff. The early berlin school sounding albums are pretty great to me.

Be careful, it's like an entry drug. You'll realize one day you spent hours listening to tribal/new age recordings and pondering existence.

Ive found that his work takes a lot of listenings to get into, but sure, if it's as good as Virgins i'll sacrifice some hours of nbbmn

>Ignore the inevitable "backpack ambient" faggots. They never have any real criticisms.
Stars of the Lid are very good, but I find their sound a little too polished and innocuous. Same thing for Kyle Bobby Dunn's latest album: it's really nice and soothing, but doesn't go much further than that. I prefer ambient that's a little more evocative.

>>51183159
>I've only got one ambient album tbh, Oren Ambarchi - Grapes from the Estate. My opinion is that one.
Well at least it's a good one.

>>51183626
Biosphere is one of my favourite ambient artists. Substrata is his masterpiece, but Microgravity (ambient techno) and Shenzhou (based on Debussy) are also great. And Dropsonde too.

>>51183386
>ambient techno isn't ambient, it's techno.
You've got a point, although the difference isn't always clear-cut in my opinion... Gas and Selected Ambient Works 85-92 are too techno to be really ambient, but a few beats here and there don't hurt.

It's not like the difference between drone and drone metal or noise and noise rock, which are very different in spirit.

>>51183699
Great selection; I've got quite a few favourites in common with you.

Last time I posted in an ambient thread I started a chart but didn't get around to finishing it, I should work on it now...

In the meantime, a few more recommendations:

Loscil – Plume
(soothing)

Nautic Depths – North Passage
(dark/cold)

Isnaj Dui – Duodecim
(acoustic, introspective)

Monolake – Gobi

From what I've seen backpambient is any ambient that is popularly posted here which doesn't make any sense because that's the opposite of what the backpacker part implies.

Amber, try denying it's one of the best albums of the genre.
>>
>>51184252
its by far the best ambient techno album out there

still, its far too beat driven to be considered ambient, although nine and yulquen are both some of the best ambient tracks theyve ever done
>>
>>51184227

Not that guy, but I always pop in ambient threads looking for new material but it's like the same posts all the time.

>check this obscure dark ambient project

I think there's room for everyone, but we lack diversity

Maeror Tri is pretty good, do you like Troum and :zoviet*france: too? They have more ties to tribal ambient and tape/industrial music, especially :z*f:, but I hear some resemblance between them.

I consider it to be ambient though. Not being pretentious or anything, but some beat is good with ambient, Biosphere style or like pic related (fucking great album).

Speaking of soundtracks, who else loves Akira's soundtrack?

aw ye! Troum is two doods from Maeror Tri so the resemblance is not surprising.
