I like it when the singer sounds like he's on the verge of laughing but must press on. Like that part in "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite" when he's all "Candy bar a fallen star or a reading from Dr. Seuss" and you can hear the shiteating grin on his face when he's going into the chorus.

Soft female vocals over fast, heavy, fuzzy guitar (Joanna Gruesome, Perfect Pussy)

Sample-heavy hip-hop (Public Enemy, "Paul's Boutique")

Non-political, carefree and cheesy punk rock (Nobunny, Ramones)

Metal of any sort with blatant occult/satanic overtones (Mercyful Fate, Black Sabbath)

Trip-hop with evident hip-hop roots (i.e., not just electronics downtempo; Massive Attack, Tricky)

OP I think you would really enjoy this album.
This Glocca Morra album is nothing like any of their others, it's essentially a prog/emo album that reads more like a narrative on the human condition. The struggle of coming of age, dealing with your past and keeping optimism for the future. Never a chorus, sparse guitar hooks, multiple vocalists.

Cool thread idea, I wish I'd found it earlier

>songs that build around a simple repeated rhythm
>raw/passionate/emotive female vocals (men who do this are cool too but I tend to prefer women)
>liberal use of violins or similar string instruments
>prominent, heavy, crushing drums
>dark, but cautiously optimistic lyricism
>>
Because I like being oddly specific:

>when the music gets loud and chaotic and the drummer starts using his ride cymbal
>when the singer's voice finaly breaks after a lot of screaming
>guitars with just enough distortion to make 'em sound vicious, but too little to sound 'distorted' per se
>beach-boy-esque vocal harmonies
>when a song starts 'falling apart', one instrument dropping out after another, feedback taking over, the drums losing speed until only the vocals are left behind

>>51137970
>weird breakdowns
