Someone on the soul/funk/R&B thread posted this last night, and holy shit, I was not disappointed.

What are your listening to? Favourite artists? Best labels? Are you into any modern stuff influenced by these genres?

I actually listened to this today and it was really good. I also listened to this album and at least five times I said wow holy shit out loud. It's funk, but with rock elements and it's sort of sung in french, but 9.5/10 for me

At their worst they're a bit cheesy, but their first few albums are really solid. That's the Way of the World was their zenith.

This is better, I don't understand why you don't have Bill Withers in it though. And that George Clinton album isn't really essential.

And no Isley Brothers, no Four Tops. Get rid of that comp and the Charles Bradley album.
>>

Charles Bradley covers the modern throwback styles and besides, its just a chart for people getting into the music, not a THE BEST AND DON'T YOU DARE LISTEN TO ANYTHING ELSE chart

Keep the comp. The songs on it are top-tier and soul isn't an album genre anyway.

It's up to all of us to start up a funk/soul thread whenever there isn't one. Also make sure to post funk and soul albums in misc/game threads.
>>
>>50934831
/soulfunkr&b/ will never become a thing as long as there's no "expert" tripfag.

can you imagine how /jazz/ would look like without jtg?
>>
>>50934875
And thats only because he shares so much.

Most want to be spoonfed and told what to listen to, preferably with a confirmation from some reviewer and an 8/10 or higher score attached.
>>
>>50934875
>>50934883
What about /bleep/? That's a healthy community without a tripfag who runs it all the time.
>>
>>50934916
Took years before there was a decent community though. From 2006 - 2011 the /bleep/ community of /mu/ was less than 20.
>>
>>50934883
>And thats only because he shares so much.
Nope. jtg is way more knowledgeable than anyone in /jazz/.

>Most want to be spoonfed and told what to listen to, preferably with a confirmation from some reviewer and an 8/10 or higher score attached.
Ok, so lets say, we keep spamming this thread daily, it gets some recognition, and there will be a lot of entry level soul and funk fans on /mu/. What will we do when everyone is already spoonfed? this thread will die quick, because barely anyone here knows shit about soul and funk (including me).
>>
>>50934925
/bleep/ is way harder to get into than funk and soul though. I feel like we could be successful more quickly than that.
>>
>>50934959
>What will we do when everyone is already spoonfed?

How about working on a collective pastebin of obscure funk and soul music, including compilations and singles? We could also include documentary links and PDFs of books about the development of the genre.
>>
>>50934994
>How about working on a collective pastebin of obscure funk and soul music, including compilations and singles?
Now you're just spoonfeeding them further

>We could also include documentary links and PDFs of books about the development of the genre.
This might help, but you're still just spoonfeeding them.
>>
>>50935026
>This might help, but you're still just spoonfeeding them.
Helping others to help themselves is the good kind of spoonfeeding.
>>
>>50935037
>Helping others to help themselves is the good kind of spoonfeeding.
Every spoonfeeding is good at this point, if we want to make /soulfunkr&b/ a thing. But we'll just have more entry level fans

But if we want to be an actual community we need actual discussion, we need more knowledgeable people.
>>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAReaudcwJA
>>
We need to develop a sticky sort of bulletin that we always open the thread with, including information about the most classic artists, labels to explore, where to find new music, information about the genre's history, etc.

Any ideas /FSR/?
>>
>>50935074
>Every spoonfeeding is good at this point, if we want to make /soulfunkr&b/ a thing
This. We need to spoonfeed people enough that they can enter the genre easily, whilst also providing resources to go deeper and build more in-depth knowledge and taste.
>>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbIwR6EUmN8

yeah
>>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMOJvKD_26I
>>
>>50935026
>Now you're just spoonfeeding them further

I meant it as a collaborative community exercise, i.e. we encourage new users to go out and find stuff for us to add to the pastebin.

I guess you guys should check out Pat Martino, Hermeto Pascoal, Dave Valentin, Chet Baker, Nat Nichols, Wes Montgomery, and Weldon Irvine.
>>
>>50935389
Sorry man, my tastes are pretty entry-level but there's only one or two other guys who ever start these threads.
>>
>>50935389
>Wes Montgomery

I haven't heard a lot of his discography, but isn't he mostly a jazz guitarist? What soul/funk stuff of his should I listen to?
>>
