>Only really hear about Boris, MOFTD and Midori on 4chan
>All these fags missing out on the perfect post-hardcore that Number Girl was making in the late 90's.
They have an incredibly diverse range of influences - The Pixies and Husker Du are their main influences but they draw from pop stuff like Prince, to post-punk stuff like The Pop Group (their biggest single rips from She Is Beyond Good & Evil), to traditional Japanese music. Also hear a bit of Fugazi in there.
All of it comes together to make really powerful, original punk music.

They had a bunch of reissues put out that I can't find anywhere, which is a bummer. David Friddmann (early bassist/founding member of Mercury Rev, probably best known as producer for The Flaming Lips) is involved in their last two albums, as well as the reissues.
Listened to too much Perfume recently, it's a bit mind-rotting

I listened to Thousand Knives recently and loved it, any recs on which of his stuff to check out after or should I just pick something and go for it?
>>50786045
Oh man, too bad I'll never get to see a bland and boring radio rock group.
>>50786008
thanks
Why are Japanese musicians so much more talented when it comes to playing instruments compared to western bands?
>Guitarists refrain from using basic power chords
>Bass players don't follow the rhythm and instead write interesting and complex bass lines (as a bass player, this is why I love J-Rock)
>Drummers don't rely on smashing drum kits and instead write interesting, complimentary parts
>Japanese music charts actually have talented bands chart regularly
>>50786074
Have you actually listened to their discography? They're actually quite talented and far from "radio rock". We'd never see bands liek that chart here.
>>50786108
I love the sense of melody Japanese music tries to achieve. Just take a band like Casiopea for instance. It's basically elevator muzak. But I love it!
>>50777751
woah, this is awesome, thanks for the rec
>>50786128
I hear you there. Japanese music has had a decent influence on me musically due to how creative the bands are there. I think it's due to the fact that people in Japan always buy there music, so real talent is always supported. That and when wider Asia, they'll never have to worry about having to sell out like American bands.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq2Ob5Z40Yg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxiQtvXiAUg
(Some Japanese guitar players honestly out play most dad rock bands as well)
>>50786127
I've listened to AKFG for the majority of high-school.
Their peak was Fanclub. Siren is the best song they have, that single is pretty strong.
Everything else is Weezer/Foo Fighters tier. Very predictable and bland.
Magic Disk was bad. Have not heard their new one.
I try to buy as much as I can througgh the Japanese iTunes store or amazon.jp
When I spend money on Japanese music it makes me feel good.
>>50786186
Their earlier stuff is definitely better, no doubt. Solanin from Magic Disk was pretty top tier though, best song they released in the last few years.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCwtmCxJgik
Anyone listened to the new OYA album?
>>50786057
me too. although I'm worried since there hasn't been any updates since his announcement in early July. I'm so glad I was able to see Sakamoto in concert in 2010 and YMO twice in 2011.
>>50786058
That's a great way to start off since that first album is no 'easy listening' kind of album. His next album after that one is Summer Nerves, which is a tropical/jazz fusion/discopop record that sounds nothing like Thousand Knives or like YMO. After that comes B2-Unit which is just kind of ambient/experimental electronica, nothing like Summer Nerves. Basically what I'm trying to say is...listen to anything you can get. Each one of his albums vary greatly, in particular his late 70s/early 80s stuff. If you want something more along the lines of Thousand Knives, you could probably listen to YMO's Technodelic (1981).
>>50786396
Japanese artists are so dedicated they don't take enough rest when they are ill and end up killing themselves.
>>50784260
Is he working on anything atm? Side projects? Anything?
Are there any Japanese Music Charts? I have picked up World's End Girlfriend, Shiina Ringo and Rei Harakami but would like something I can refer to when I have run out of stuff to listen to.
