In this link, I'm playing Needle in the Hay by Elliott Smith. I've been playing guitar for 3 years but I'm not very experienced in recording/producing etc. and I kinda just used Audacity. I THOUGHT I figured out how vocal-backing works, but I don't like the way it sounds because the chorus really just kinda stands out above the rest of the thing.

and the answer he gave you is incomplete hoenstly. any DAW is good enough to make actual studio-quality recordings if you know what you're doing. equalizing, mastering, balancing, etc. are all things you need to consider and become proficient at if you want to be a good producer.
it's really fucking hard to learn on your own. some people manage it but it's probably easiest to just take a class

Try to sing a bit "lower" if that makes any sense. Not lower as in pitch, but use more of your chest rather than your throat when your trying to force the air out. Just take it easy and make sure you're hitting the right notes.

I was one of the lead vocals on Ghost, and you can faintly here me singing the horns melody on The Fool. They were about to use my version of Two Headed Boy until that Johnny Cash sounding motherfucker came along.
