Daily soul, funk and R&B thread for everyone to ignore again.

Who are your top 5 artists of old and current?
>>
>Top 5
D'Angelo
Marvin Gaye
Erykah Badu
Terry Callier
Teddy Pendergrass

Your pic is also a definite honorable mention, but hasn't been on my mind for a while
>>
Frank Ocean, The Wkend, FKA Twigs, the list goes on...
>>
>>50314571
Guys I'm getting into Marvin Gaye and I really fucking love him right now. Who else should I try?
>>

>>
>>50314681
Sam Cooke
>>
top 5 current funk bands
New Mastersounds
The Getup
Jungle Fire
Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators (have to put this here since I´m from Finland)
Breakestra

Might be a different list tomorrow. Just so many great funk bands atm.
>>
Why isn't this kind of music talked about more? Is it because it's popular and black?
>>
>>50314829
It's because it doesn't have any subgenres
>>
>>50314810
Nice, never usually see anyone talking modern funk like these, heard this?

>>
>>50314829
Its not reviewed by Pitchfork or Fantano and Scaruffi is a racist.
>>
>>50314829
Hip-Hop is already there to suply the R&B needs
>>
>>50314886
>Its all made by black people so it all sounds the same
>>
>>50314859

Couple of good modern funk compilations here from the archive.

Craig Charles (yes that guy from Red Dwarf and Corrie)
>Modern funk and soul
>Freestyle Records was originally started by DJ and promoter, Adrian Gibson in 2003 and has spearheaded the resurgence in funk, jazz, soul, latin and most other forms of rootsy black music. Craig Charles Funk & Soul show in Radio 6 explores the best in funk and soul from the roots of black music through to the current club sounds, featuring classic tracks, new releases, sessions and interviews.

>funk, modern throwback soul
>hard funk, soul, and afrobeat by current artists. Made-up of musicians and producers but with great modern yet old style sound.

>>
>>50315089
thanks! i'll buy it from juno downloads
>>
>>50314681
Gil Scott-Heron - Pieces of a Man
Isaac Hayes - Hot Buttered Soul
>>
If you like funk, reggae and afrobeat I recommend that you check out http://www.parisdjs.com/ . They have lots of free dl albums also!

The still small funk scene in europe is growing fast! Too bad New Mastersounds migrated from GB to USA before I got to see them live.
>>
Top soul/funk single compilations, /mu/? Obscurity is preferred. I don't want to double dip.
>>
>>50315301
Dunno any but the ones ITT and the main Motown ones etc
>>
I'd heartily recommend the entirety of Tyrone Davis' discography (there's a compilation album, 'The Ultimate Tyrone Davis', which is actually a fantastic representation of his work). Also take a look at Regional Garland if you haven't already; Raphael Saadiq obviously; Anthony Hamilton's earlier albums; Jose James' two recent records if you like D'Angelo...

I've got to rush off anyway but I'll post some more specific/obscure stuff later on.
>>
>>50314571
Is that a picture of chuck berry?
>>
what do you guys think of kimbra?
considering shes a fusion of soul and funk
>>
What are some other labels for modern stuff like Freestyle Records and Daptone Records?
>>
>>50316139
Not bad, prefer nu soul singers like Kinny, Andreya Triana, Skye, Alice russell, Kylie Auldist, I should listen to more Kimbra probably

I'm not that much into funk/soul/rnb, i know the basics, but man, I am so grateful for posts like this. I follow soulful house mostly, tried searching for modern soul things myself but i hit the wall every time and give up.
Thanks Anon, you made a person happy.
>>
>>50316381
No problem, turnys upload not mine

You should have a look on discogs at labels like Daptone, Ubiquity Records, Dunham, Rawking Cuts and similar.
