Does /mu/ever read?
>>
I tried once.
>>
I don't really have time to read things that aren't technical manuals.
>>
>>50198654
a friend of mine just recommended me that 33 1/3 yesterday
>>
i read all the time

never about music though, that would be plain ridiculous
>>
>>50198730
You should read Lester Bangs. He's one of the best writers of his time, regardless of the fact that he only ever wrote about music. Try reading his stuff about Lou Reed, such as Let Us Now Praise Famous Death Dwarves
>>
>>50198654
this one made me wish I knew John Darnielle in real life
>>
>>50198654
I've read the ITAOTS 33 1/3 and the Ween - Chocolate and Cheese 33 1/3
>>
Just started getting into reading. Sometimes I'll read with music on but it's hard to concentrate unless it's really subtle music like SotL.

Yeah. I bought it because, Sabbath, and then as I got the premise, I was jealous that I had not thought of it myself.

Gödel, Escher, Bach is a great read
>>
Sure. I'm currently reading The Map and the Territory by Alan Greenspan.
>>
Yes. I only visit /mu/ and /lit/, I literally have those two boards open all the time.
>>
>>50200043

It's great reading those comics as an adult again, because of all the social and political commentary you didn't noticed as a child.

Yet I have time to be a pompous arse on a image board for Chinese cartoons.

what are the 10 most important american books in your opinion? I need to read more us authors
>>
I only ever read on the train, but now that I ride my bike everywhere I don't really have time. But this year I've read biographies on Moondog, Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra.
>>
>>50200299
some weird shit happened with the servers. We are coming back.
>>
I've read almost every book there is on the Ramones. Can't wait for Marky and CJ to finally release their books.
>>
>>50200359
Shit, that's a good question, lemme take a stab (in no particular order):
>Slaughterhouse 5
>The Recognitions
>Gravity's Rainbow
>Cannery Row
>A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
>The Day of the Locust
>Catch-22
>Infinite Jest (not my favorite, but important)
>American Psycho
>Lolita
>>
>>50198932
Hey I was in that /lit/ thread too!
>>
>>50200438
>nabokov
>american
>>
>>50200438
I think Thoreau's writing deserves a spot on that list.
>>
>>50200461
He's American, if anything, considering he was kicked out of Russia, hated Germany and never wrote in German anyway.
>>
How are the 33 1/3 books? I'm contemplating buying the one for Donuts and for Master of Reality, perhaps some others too
Has anyone read one that they can recommend for or against?

>>50200461
perhaps we can give him the benefit of doubt that he's listing it as being influential in american lit, which is an arguable point
>>
After reading the 33 1/3 on Loveless I was tempted to write a screenplay on it as a tame paranoid thriller. I was really interested in doing that.

The Unknown Pleasures one I read once. I didn't like and remember it being a Joy Division wankfest.

The Spiderland book is really interesting and insightful. It was like that Slint doc before the Slint doc was made.
>>
>>50200490
I was only considering novels. If went into philosophy and nonfiction I don't know if I could just make a top 10.
>>
>>50200517
fair enough
>>
>>50200508
>>50200512

Some are good, some eh. Do a little research by way of a particular book's review.
>>
>>50200438

I know most of these but I check out those I haven't read yet.

thx

>the president's a fool
>why do I have to keep reading this technical manual
>>
>>50198654
I read a lot, but I hate this kind of stuff
the 33 1/2 and the likes are cancer, short analysis that don't go anywhere nor teach you anything you would have learn by some google search
>>
>>50201339
You should try the Celine Dion one. It goes into Bourdieu, Kant, Adorno, aesthetics and Canadian history.

Last music related book I read. It's a collection of articles/essays on topics ranging from DJ culture to free improvisation.
