If you're looking to get into JF, The Empyrean is GOAT. It's a much, much more polished sound, and is probably my personal favorite album of all time. Shadows Collide With People is where he started to polish up his records a bit more and I guess "self-edit." I would try one of those records if you want to get into his more polished stuff.

I feel that it's one of the few records that Steven went for a singular mood for the entire piece, so it feels more cohesive. I think Signify fits that description quite nicely. Anyway, I get what you're saying about In Absentia but I disagree. I think Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are all over the place stylistically even though IA was an amalgamation of his psych, prog, and new-metal tendencies. I think he pulled it off really well and then mastered it with FOABP.

Agree on Signify, but most of the ambient tracks are pretty filler and the songwriting isn't to the same level. Either way yeah FOABP is his peak. I like to think of Insurgentes as another side to that record though, because it's got the same dark themes to it. I wish he had developed that style more rather than going straight into KC-prog

Meh, personal taste and all that, but you can dismiss almost any metal by saying it's 'cheesy.' It works for other genres too, if you take inherent aspects of a genre, and put them on an absolute scale, every genre's aspects (Except for maybe commercial pop) will seem exaggerated and dumb. Here are some examples:
Prog rock: Aimless guitar noodling trying to be as long-winded as possible.
Ambient: Empty soundscapes with no meaning or grounding
Hip-Hop: Sweary poetry with very little 'music.'
Now while all of those things are true on an absolute scale, it's the exaggeration of certain aspects and the ignoring or turning down of others, that makes each genre have its own identity.

I've only ever heard Hi, How Are You?. I really liked Walking The Cow but I can't really say that the rest of it did much for me.
That's a little strange; I typically enjoy lo-fi music with odd lyrics. I'm a huge fan of NMH and have listened to probably 99% of any material they've ever released accidentally or purposefully. This includes their early Monroe House Demos, which aren't "outsider" but have a similar lo-fi nonsensical sound, if a more psychedelic one.
I suppose some of John Frusciante's music could be considered outsider music. I'm sure some of the music I've written could be considered outsider music. Outsider is definitely a grab bag.
So I was disappointed but not surprised that Daniel Johnston didn't really fulfill my expectations. Maybe I just need another listen, or a different album.
