>>49712001

I don't own one (poor as fuck, and i get good results with my dr770 so i'm not too worried about getting a new drum machine), but i've spent a decent amount of time with one at multiple music stores, and it's pretty fucking good. It's so easy to use, pretty much what you'd wish for in a roland drum machine. I'm hoping that they add more kits to it like the 606 and 727, but for 500 bucks it can't be beat.
only thing i don't really like about it is the scatter
>>
>>49713865

>>
>>49714114
In my opinion, the only thing i'd look at in that price range is other than that is this kit (if you're good with a soldering iron) http://www.sonic-potions.com/lxr, to me it seems a bit more flexible with what i can do, but the TR-8 isn't a kit and would work just fine, might be a bit better in live situations with the individual volume control for each drum sound. if you're into modular wankery there's also a trigger out addon for the LXR

the dr770 is pretty good, especially for the price it goes for (around $100 US), the interface is simple (like an mpc), the quantization is good, but it needs a bit of EQ to sound good to me. It's like a limited Roland R-70 with more sounds, it's the same as the DR 660, but this one has the 909 hihats, some more and a different color, and only has one individual out. the reverb on it is pretty nice, it's easy as hell to use, but i would not use it live because you can't edit patterns and mute while playing, i usually just make the patterns and move from one to the next, works really well for me when just recording trax

>>
>>49719365
>I feel like these two threads should be merged, they're both pretty slow anyway.
Ok then. I've been fucking around with my extremely basic midi controller and ableton for a little while now.
I want to upgrade my keys with a cheap real synth with midi output so I can actually make some noise with friends rather than by myself in my room. Hopefully make it the start of a small collection.

Anyway, I have a pretty small budget. I was looking at the DS-8, it has some pretty gorgeous pads, but hell, I can do pads. A fair portion of what goes into good pads (in my amateur opinion) is sound design.

I'm really at a loss. I've got little idea at the average price things go for, and honestly little idea full stop.

TL;DR an undervalued (and therefore cheap) key synth with character and MIDI output plox
>>
>>49719492

>why's that?

"It doesn’t feel right to keep repressing things that existed in a certain time and space, and have a certain energy that is relevant to a certain period of time, even though they’re still relevant now, to some extent, in some people’s lives."
>>
>>49719607
about 5 GBP, so close to 10 AUD. Still works out cheaper than going to my local record store though. A double LP usually costs $45-$50 (27+ pound). Life down under is hard.
>>
>>49719706
That's pretty good shipping, what sort of protection do you have? Is that registered post?
>>
>>49719620
I'm assuming you don't have a laptop. There isn't very much in the ~$200 price range as far as I know. Once you get up to ~$500 there's a lot more stuff. If you want a polysynth and are OK with digital sounds, Waldorf Blofeld is usually recommended. Otherwise there are a lot of OK analog monosynths in that range
>>

I've got a bank of field recordings from when my mate was studying film. I've been making... I dunno what the correct term is, soundscapes? But enhancing the field recordings. Big inspiration was Music for Real Airports, but with a lot more use of samples. Wanky bloops shit basically.

I will be dicking around with some jungle at some point though for sure.

what do you think about this?

pinch:
"I find the album in dance music a bit of a self-contradictory thing. Because it's ultimately a layover from rock and blues and the traditional aspect of the music industry. Dance music is about continuous music presented by DJs, so I think that the more honest document is in the mix format. It's about how you work those tunes together. The idea of just listening to a straight minimal techno album, where you might have eight nine-minute tunes with two-minute intros and two-minute outros from start to finish—it's not meant to be listened to like that. "

anyone been listeing? p good
>>
>>49721284
i don't really agree with this. first, who's to say how anything is "meant to be listened to" in the first place? what is proper listening? is a recorded DJ mix really better than an album created as a complete work by a single artist? but aren't those mixes crafted in real time based on the feel of the dance floor? why would listening to these mixes out of context be any better than listening to an album?
mixes are monolithic arrangements by DJs, which precludes regular people from listening to this sort of music "properly". it needlessly elevates the importance of the DJ who basically exists to cue up the right part of the right track, i.e. skip those "two-minute intros and two-minute outros".
perhaps producers ought to create albums with the flowing nature of DJ mixes in mind, rather than having disjoint intros and outros for each track. but discounting home listening is just idiotic, considering the fact that it makes up the bulk of most people's listening.
>>
i literally never listen to mixes tbh
>>
>>49721964
me either. when you take them out of a context where you need a steady beat going, like a club or hell, even working out, they just seem like self-congratulatory pissing contests, sort of like last.fm 3x3 threads on /mu/.

>>
>>49722630

Album? His last one was wack
>>
>>49721943
I agree, mixes are more about the dj's expression through song choice, albums are to be consumed in a completely different format. Take claude's urban animal, most of the songs are good live, but as an album you gain additional context that you wouldn't get in a dj set.
>>
>>49722687
Nah just a single it looks like. Was half life his last album? I quite liked it
>>
>>49722730

Meta human was 100x better
>>
>>49721284

>I find the album in dance music a bit of a self-contradictory thing.

this is the only part I agree with. In a sense the mix format is authentic because it represents the club environment. at the same time it's a catch-22 because a lot of cool things about a dj mix is enjoying how and where the dj mixes the record, which is easier to hear if you've actually listened to the entire track.

intros and outros are only so relevant because you have a spectrum from djs like klock who tend to long mix to someone like EZ where you might get hit with 5 tracks in 60 seconds all dropped in different sections.
>>
fuck EZ style djs

m8 just put on a 10 minute track and leave it... if it's a good tune the person who wrote it will have all the necessary skills to make it an good experience, don't need some ADHD idiot dropping in different tunes e very 10 seconds
>>
>>49722823

i'm not sure how i feel about it sometimes. i like the creative idea in fast mixing but i hate dancing to it because i like to zone out and it breaks my rhythm too much.

Does anyone have a good quality rip of this?
>>
>>49723207
definitely not in america, you don't hear that shit at a frat party or in pop song beats like with trap
>>
>>49723241

i think if it happens it will be a weird bleed over into rave sound and breaks. pure footwork is too hard for bros to dance to.
>>
>>49723241

Na. Footwork is too frenetic for it to be something commercialized for the masses. Too niche.
>>
>>49723272

that's because footwork is for urban black people. it gets played at black events in the midwest.

more dubstep like this would also be nice:

yeah, i know. i go to school in the south side of chicago, but i'm white as fuck. black people in chicago have been footworking for quite a while though so i don't think that really counts as "hype" around here.

why is the amen break so fucking good?
>>
>>49723136
what's wrong with slamming on a mix while you're doing something else? it's a great way to hear a lot of different tunes put together in a tasteful compilation without getting bored of each one (let's face it, listening to a 4-bar loop for 7 minutes can definitely be boring) and to discover new music without having to search for it first

mixes are also the perfect backdrop to any sort of social event, whether it's a party, 10 guys drinking and getting rowdy or you and 2 of your mates smoking weed and giggling at stupid shit

Sounds tedious. Just listen to the mix...if you're worried about the quality don't listen to shitty djs
>>
>>49723335
If you like BSE I'd recommend Noisia, Phace, Misanthrop. Mayhem, Calyx & Teebee, Fierce, Telemetrik, old Icicle, Spor (fuck Feed Me) and The Upbeats. State of Mind are sounding quite Neurofunk-ish these days as well.

But seriously, listen to this man >>49723448

>>

completely agreed. mixes are also great because you can pay attention to the technical details or you can zone out and do other things while the mix sort of presents itself to you. it's also cool how particular songs and the way the DJ transitions into them become ingrained in your remembrance of that song.

Not 2014 I know - but here's hoping he announces something soon or early next year - but I found myself coming back to this as of late. Mainly because him and Machinedrum are perhaps the only two artists on Ninjatune that get a lot of interest from me, but I've also come to the realization that I love this track:

well if you know anything about the music you like then you already know exactly who you're gonna search for for a certain kind of mix... i don't see how you can really run into this problem unless you literally search like "jungle mix 2014" on soundcloud

>>
>>49726307
you've said before about the lion ninja, but the lion is traditionally a reggae thing, jungle just took that from reggae. the lion is farrrrrr more common and far more closely associated with reggae music than jungle. the jamaican guy samples in jungle tunes talking about zion and babylon and heart of a lion and all that is all sampled from old reggae tunes...
>>
>>49707691
remember when we tried to start a label?

>>49716591
thanks m8
>>
>>49726509
Reggae is also allowed to have lions, but the places I get my music from do not usually feature any reggae/dancehall uploads so I usually expect it to be Jungle. And then it turns out to be Techno or House or Trance or some other shit and that's not on.

any number of producers could have produced that record, including pearson sound but it's not a particularly signature sound of his. plus wouldn't it be strange for a UK artist to release on that label? i've not actually seen any evidence for this other than word of mouth
