Pretty much all of Bill Callahan's work both under his own name and the Smog/(Smog) moniker is pretty intensely lonely.
Wild Love, especially, is a very lonely album. His earliest work(Sewn to the Sky, Julius Caesar) is even lonelier, but a bit less accessible. Wild Love is about feeling lonely even when there are people around. Smog clicked with me in my most intense periods of alienation and isolation.

It never really hit me until I actually paid attention to lyrics of Wouldn't It Be Nice. It's traditionally known as such a happy song, but really it's quite depressing. He's just fantasizing about all of those lovely situations, and wouldn't it be nice if they were true.
