Beautiful lyrics, beautiful voices, beautiful instrumentation, and touches me on a personal level. Highly underrated, and in my opinion, the best album of all time.
Eureka too, Jim O'Rourke is so fucking great
Hip Hop perfection imo

Faust
Full of fucking great moments, doesn't take itself too seriously, can be incredibly moving at points (see the ending of Meadow Meal or the chants in Meadow Meal, as well as the ending of the entire album).
Why Don't You Eat Carrots
>great intro, love the use of noise and pop music
>the piano at the start is fantastic, sets the stage for the main theme
>when the band pauses and has some strange sounds, only to kick back in with a killer horn solo that just fits perfectly with everything else going on
>that moment where the horn starts the next theme by itself, and the band kicks back in with it
Meadow Meal
>when the first guitar comes in after the ambiance
>the chants (something about them just feels really emotional to me, can't really put my finger on it)
>the guitar solo
>that explosion of noise after the first part of the solo ends
>the storm at the end, followed by the organ (which felt like a rainbow to me for some reason)
Miss Fortune
>all of the beginning, building up
>when the band goes into a bluesy, slower style
>precisely 8:08
>"exploosiiooon" (found this really funny for some reason)
>the moment of silence before the acoustic guitar comes in at the end
>the voices alternating
>then finally ending together
>'Nobody knows if it really happened'
>also 'he told you to be free/and you obeyed'
Fucking fantastic album, really entertaining, really powerful, and always a joy to listen to for me. I don't listen to it often (don't want to overplay it) but it really leaves me bewildered for the rest of the day, kind of like that feeling when you finish a great book

yeah, i know what you mean. i only like a bit more than half the songs, but the ones that i do like are so good they make up for the rest. also
>not lichen
This is pretty much the pinnacle of jazz for me. Great compositions, great soloing, lots of interplay between the musicians, swings hard. It also touches on a variety of emotions and has some of the feelsiest jazz out there.
>>48741684
I think The Campfire Headphase is the best... the mix of the guitars with synths is amazing, and Dayvan Cowboy is the best song ever created. Shame it's their least liked, along with Twoism.

Another obvious choice, but it's so fantastic. The absence of real chord changes forces these songs in very interesting directions where they focus on melody, rhythm, and general atmosphere. "Take a look at these hands" along with David Byrne's delivery has given me legitimate chills. Experimental but still very poppy. Also has one of, if not the greatest, left-field pop songs of all time (Once in a Lifetime).

thanks for your arbitrary ratings, very quality addition to this thread
I'm going to sperg out for a second so I can talk about how much I fucking love this album.
>White Light/White Heat
This shit just kicks you off right into the thick of it, with Cale smashing down on the piano and all that sweet fuzz. Lou's vocals are playful and super energetic, doubly so when you realize he's crooning about the occult and amphetamine. I love it.
>The Gift
The fucking bass groove is ridiculous. Everyone always tells me that it's only good for one listen, and after you hear the story for the first time it's boring as fuck. I totally disagree. I find it really easy to get lost in the downright seductive instrumental in the background. It's fucking superb. Soon enough, Cale's Welsh narration is just another timbre in the mix, and it's perfectly deadpan. I almost want to relisten to it right now.
>Lady Godiva's Operation
This track is so wonderfully offputting. Cale's saccharine sweet vocals offset the forebodingly sharp guitar melody, and the lumbering bass that sounds like it's getting ready to fuck you up. When Lou Reed's voice cuts in on "The Doctor is coming, the nurse thinks...SWEETLY" is one of my favorite moments on the album.
>Here She Comes Now
It's really pretty. That's all there really is to say. On an album filled with spastic, amphetamine fueled energy, this is subdued but enthusiastic. Cale's piano is fucking fantastic on this one.
>Heard Her Call My Name
Holy fuck, the energy on this track is unbelievable. The catharsis of that second solo is just obscene. Lou just absolutely destroys it. I honestly can't believe this track was made in 1968.
>Sister Ray
This track absolutely speaks for itself. Cale's organ is fucking fantastic. Sterling's rhythm guitar is so understated until the end, when you realize that the drums have given out and he's the only thing left you can hold on to. Lou's vocals are amusing, and his delivery is just superb. Everything about Sister Ray is just GOAT as fuck.
Real 10/10.

Yes, After The Flood is such a fantastic song. Underrated album both on here and among plebs.

I hadn't thought about it before, but that's actually an interesting thing to consider. I'd say the style of the instrumental was definitely an influence. Specifically how Lou starts to play around with making his guitar screech and squeal as the song goes on. Those obviously weren't really traditional rock textures, least of all in 1968.
You could be right.

I've heard the interpretation that Born Under Punches is basically the deathbed ramblings of an actual "government man" who's seen some serious shit overseas and is having flashbacks as he dies.
I definitely saw the song in a much more poignant light after that, and Byrne's frantic delivery just got better.
