Both Bastro (Diablo Guapo) and Shellac (At Action Park) have enough Math Rock in them to be considered as part of the genre and as such serve as a decent "in" to the style without going all out.

Not sure how your listing influences will help OP though.

With Bastro are you saying only they aren't Math Rock or that the entire Louisville scene isn't Math Rock as there's no great gulf between Bastro and others? You can pick elements out of any track on that album to highlight that.

Same stands for At Action Park.

I'm not going to disrupt listening to an album I have on to fetch up glaringly obvious examples for albums. Song of the Minerals (especially the version without vocals - true of all the instrumental versions) is a track off the top of my head.

what about the one with vocals? does math rock not imply complex in at least some way? shellac has always seemed to make minimalism the very point of the entire band.

>>
>>48717069

It can imply complexity but it's not the be all and end all of the genre. The dynamics, stop/start nature, timesignatures and style are very much one foot in Math Rock the other in the wider Post-Hardcore scene. The minimalism didn't really become that pronounced until subsequent albums.

I'd say even the tracks with vocals fit as they don't differ too drastically.

As I said though, I'm not propping Shellac up as some key band but rather a decent entry point.

Could you explain what you mean with boring? I think their range of songs is very varied, they have the intense stuff, mid tempo stuff, slow stuff, some with a bit of all, the guitar lines have a distinct sound which couldn't just be by any band, and the way they manage to incorporate the sometimes really awkward combinations of time sig bars is impressive.
Like the intro to a different kind of tall, the main riff goes 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 6/8 and 3/4 before repeating, but it sounds so organic and unforced.

Why would you go about listening to music in such a mangled way? Ignoring lyrics and vocals on an album to just listen to the instruments is not the way go about listening to music (unless your studying the music or some shit). if you are going to do that, just listen to Don Cab and hear some fucking great instrumentalist. But listening to a whole album and ignoring the vocals and lyrics? thats's like ripping a painting in two, just ruining the whole piece. An album is a work of art, and if you gotta tear art apart to find the parts you like, go look at a different artist

Check out Tera Melos, they used to be pretty fucking crazy but they've calmed down and started making legitimately catchy and interesting music.

Caddywhompus is a band I've been pimping for a long time. They're great and put on a hell of a show. Here's one of their earlier tracks, since I can't find anything else on youtube.

Yowie are complex as fuck, probably disorienting on first listen but they have some interesting ideas.

Mylets is basically Tera Melos' little cousin. It's also a one man band. From what I can tell the kid's a little shit but he makes some good music.

>>
>>48717872
but they are still math rock bands. one out of the ordinary song doesn't make the band

I can highly recommend 13.0.0.0.0 then, I admit it's not flawless, they tried to throw in some low key, idm-ish inspired parts to some songs in the middle which I don't think worked out, but it was an enjoyable listen overall.

And REM wrote a bunch of country songs. that doesn't make them a country band. Not only that but that song, while clearly showing math com elements, is more closely related to post-hardcore which can be very close to math rock (Shellac). But this is not even that. It is an alternative Rock/Stoner Rock/ Psych rock band. They will pull influences form many places because they are smart and talented musicians. But that band is nowhere near a math rock band. OP is trying to learn math rock bands, not artists who happen to do a math rock song. I've heard basement punk bands play math rock songs, but they sure as shit don't represent the genre. And neither do Queens of the stone age. They are not a good artist for OP to turn to if he wants to get into math rock. If you disagree with me, then you are probably listen to post-avant-afro-jazz-funk-step and are easily swayed when naming/learning genres
