Shoegaze thread?

My library is too full of bleeps and bloops. I already like Ride's Nowhere, Loveless, Slowdive's Souvlaki and Pygmalion, Bark Psychosis' Codename Dustsucker, and Kinoko Teikoku's ????. Looking for emotional but powerful stuff. Could I get an essentials list or something?

I adore WHIRLPOOL on ????, the chorus riff and everything is great. Same goes for Dreams Burn Down on Nowhere and Alison on Souvlaki. I like to use Codename: Dustsucker and Pygmalion to calm down to but lately I think I'm wanting more dynamic, powerful kinds of shoegaze.

not OP

is there any more shoegazy music about being a NEET/intense loneliness? Not loneliness out of a desperation for love, just complete emptiness.

I listened to Deerhunter's Microcastle and Halycon Digest and enjoyed them

Less dream pop and more gaze than Deerhunter, but this album could work - tbh I've never paid too much attention to the lyrics but the music speaks for itself and the track titles definitely suggest some isolation. My AOTY last year as well

For sure, absolutely - also based on you liking Dreams Burn Down check out Chrome by Catherine Wheel, another great 90s shoegaze release in a similar style

>>
i listened to loveless recently as my intro to shoegaze and im not sure what to think

is it just me or was that album badly mixed?

the vocals sound too quiet and dry, the instruments don't ever pack a punch

it's like they were playing in quiet in a room because there were people sleeping next door
>>
>>48430400
You're not alone, I feel like it could have been much better.

Am I the only one who thinks Loveless is pretty much a 7/10 but completely defines the genre?
>>
>>48430472
Loveless a shit
>>
>>48430400
imo Loveless isn't a great entry to shoegaze, just because it remains pretty unique (even with the slew of imitators it spawned). Really, none of the top three 'pillars of shoegaze' (Loveless, Souvlaki, Nowhere) I think are that great a place to start. If you're looking for the beginnings of the genre check out Cocteau Twins and late 80s noise pop like JAMC, or if you're looking for what shoegaze becomes check out more recent things. Loveless really is a whole different beast once you've heard a lot of shoegaze.

>>
>>48430472
I kind of got to shoegaze through a backdoor (via the band Curve) and I've never been a big fan of Loveless although a lot of my respected music friends swear by MBV. I love the genre however, especially a lot of the outlying stuff.

Im so glad to see this mentioned on /mu/
such an overlooked album, its a shame because it was really good...not my AOTY last year but it made my top 25
>>
>>48430633
Nooo I hate it when people call DIIV shoegaze. They aren't really imo, more of a krautrock-inspired-dream-pop-mildly-noisy hybrid. And yeah Cocteau Twins are most definitely dream pop but dream pop and shoegaze go hand in hand (or at least they did at the start) - the twins were hugely influential to the genre
>>48430819
Yeah Loveless is accessible obviously, that's why so many people start there, but it doesn't give you a good feel for what shoegaze was / would become outside of MBV's specific sound. What Cocteau albums have you listened to?

Heaven or Las Vegas, Blue Bell Knoll, Treasure. I like them now, I just don't think they're a good representation of shoegaze at all.
>>
>>48430950
I wasn't ever saying they were representative of shoegaze, I was suggesting them if he wanted to hear the beginnings of the genre. And a few tracks on Heaven or Las Vegas are definitely early shoegaze - Frou frou foxes in midsummer fires is noisy as fuck with huge guitar textures

I remember listening to loveless and then reading that it was shoegaze. I looked it up and was really disappointed when i realized there's no other music like it. Loveless doesn't share anything with most other shoegaze albums. I really don't get why people group Ride, slowdive and mbv together as the same genre

yea i've heard all of them, some of astrobrites crush is pretty good. LSD and the search for god sounds more like the normal shoegaze to me, their approach to production and songwriting is completely different from mbvs and more like slowdives. It's not weird that we get the mbv vs rest of shoegaze debates every thread since it's completely different kinds of music. I do like other shoegaze than mbv though, oeil, burrrn, pasteboard and especially sweet trip are amazing.
