I would say HANL or The Angelic Process are just shoegaze fused with other styles. Same with Goslings. It's not like they're fitting in a new genre, but they fit into multiple ones.

I finally got around to listening to Candy Claws. I listened to Calypso first while i was high and it fucking floored me. SO many tiny little electronic effects reverbed to make them massage your ears. I listened to Sea Life next and it was probably even better

I'm just getting into Shoegaze, and I was going through the "influential" bands and got to this album, and I thought it was the most boring, simple, repetitive shite I have recently heard. I was listening to it while lying in bed trying to relax and I had to turn it off because lines like "my toes have faces" were making me legitimately laugh. Then I found out p4k gave it a 10. Why?

Hey, southpacific, cool band.
I (and others I have spoken to) dislike that the focus on the "shoegaze aesthetic" often undermines and removes focus from rewarding songwriting, going so far as to overshadow it completely and make for an unrewarding listen.
It's amazing how much of a power gap there is between Loveless and other shoegazing albums in this regard.
Some guy told me The Dead C is like the Goslings but better but they don't even sound similar this upsets me.

It's a scene and a fusion genre. The scene is long gone but the sound they had lives on. Some people talk about nu-gaze. It was influenced by dream pop, noise rock, alternative rock and post-punk just like you mentioned. Bands that could retrospectively be called shoegaze like Cocteau Twins, The Chameleons or The Jesus and Mary Chain don't exactly bring all the components of shoegaze together in the way the scene itself did, but they're important precursors.
To understand what exactly is shoegaze, you should also have a good idea of what dream pop is. Dream pop is not shoegaze's poppier brother, but rather a huge umbrella of different sounds that, in the form they had in the 80s, influenced shoegaze. Shoegaze on the other hand had a huge influence on dream pop so alot of post-shoegaze dream pop has a sound difficult or unnecessary to differentiate from shoegaze. Then again, nowadays there are also alot of dream pop artists (Sleep ? Over to name one), that don't really have the shoegaze elements apart from the dream pop, but get the label because, well, that's how notable shoegaze is. And then there are bands like Beach House which would sound completely different without the shoegaze influence, but people tend to be more comfortable with calling them dream pop as they don't have the apathy of shoegaze.
tl;dr: dream pop and some other genres clashed together as the shoegaze scene which created their own brand of music called shoegaze which in return influenced later dream pop artists alot and has been revivalized throughout the last couple decades

Shoegaze as in guitarists gazing at their shoes. Why? To control the huge amount of pedals they use to create their sound. To me shoegaze is all about highly processed guitar sound made possible by the technological advancement of the 80s - mostly digital reverb and delay units.

Let's just say it's no Slowdive, even though there are related band members. There are sonically interesting bits here and there, nothing groundbreaking though. I wasn't a fan of Lightfoils. Like Sunny Day in Glasgow's latest album, the vocals were a huge turnoff for me, and the guitars were cranked down to Mazzy Star levels in an album that's supposed to be shoegaze.

I found out about these guys last week and I'm obsessed, I must have listened to every song they got on Youtube and so far I've yet to hear one bad one. WTF is going here? Why aren't these guys selling millions? Why isn't the music industry promoting the f*ck out of them? Everybody i've showed them to so far says the same thing, they're amazing. I think that album is a little boring by shoegaze standards, not really my fav, it's ok. You're thick if you think that shoegaze is something with mass appeal and has the same audience as a shoegaze artist does. Also, I like Kanye.
