I'm just getting into Shoegaze, and I was going through the "influential" bands and got to this album, and I thought it was the most boring, simple, repetitive shite I have recently heard. I was listening to it while lying in bed trying to relax and I had to turn it off because lines like "my toes have faces" were making me legitimately laugh. Then I found out p4k gave it a 10. Why?
Someone please explain why this is good in any way.
>>
>>48327683
I kinda know what you mean. I can't really get into Galaxie 500. His vocals kind of bother me with with how bad they sound.

However, on at least some of the songs, like the one you quoted, they actually create very lush and beautiful instrumental compositions. Also the solo on 'Another Day' is fantastic use of delay.
>>
>>48326682

>>
>>48327683

I should probably add that my favorite "proto-shoegaze" band is probably a tie between Jesus and Mary Chain and Spacemen 3. Both had amazing debut albums
>>
>>48327683
Yeah i would say if you want to get into shoegaze just listen to some popular shoegaze albums.
p4k probably gave it a high score because its influential. If youre not into the more post punk roots of shoegaze you could stick with drone metal and noiserock to get a similar heavy guitar wall feel. also black metal.
>>
>>48327683

Hey, southpacific, cool band.

I (and others I have spoken to) dislike that the focus on the "shoegaze aesthetic" often undermines and removes focus from rewarding songwriting, going so far as to overshadow it completely and make for an unrewarding listen.

It's amazing how much of a power gap there is between Loveless and other shoegazing albums in this regard.

What exactly is shoegaze? Is it a short-lived movement of the late 80s and early 90s characterized by a handful of bands such as Moose, MBV, Slowdive, and Ride, or does it also encompass those that came before like the Chameleons, the Jesus & Mary Chain, and those that come after, such as Seefeel, Bowery Electric, A Place to Bury Strangers?

That is to say, is shoegaze that pre-Britpop British movement of a fusion of dream-pop, noise-pop, and post-punk bands that ends with the ascendancy of Oasis and Grunge, or is shoegaze a musical genre in its own right?

I mean, I know the traditional definition, but it seems the term lacks a precise definition.

shoegaze is a term someone came up with, like any term that is applied to anything. Unless there's some very technical points about the music that you're playing then there's going to be some fuzziness about what is and what isn't a part of the genre. That being said, I consider Bowery Electric to have shoegaze elements, most notably their out of nowhere, bending wall of guitar sound.
>>
>>48330457
>>48330457
I always thought of it as music that uses hazy, droning guitar effects. But that's not the most precise definition either.

It's a scene and a fusion genre. The scene is long gone but the sound they had lives on. Some people talk about nu-gaze. It was influenced by dream pop, noise rock, alternative rock and post-punk just like you mentioned. Bands that could retrospectively be called shoegaze like Cocteau Twins, The Chameleons or The Jesus and Mary Chain don't exactly bring all the components of shoegaze together in the way the scene itself did, but they're important precursors.

To understand what exactly is shoegaze, you should also have a good idea of what dream pop is. Dream pop is not shoegaze's poppier brother, but rather a huge umbrella of different sounds that, in the form they had in the 80s, influenced shoegaze. Shoegaze on the other hand had a huge influence on dream pop so alot of post-shoegaze dream pop has a sound difficult or unnecessary to differentiate from shoegaze. Then again, nowadays there are also alot of dream pop artists (Sleep ? Over to name one), that don't really have the shoegaze elements apart from the dream pop, but get the label because, well, that's how notable shoegaze is. And then there are bands like Beach House which would sound completely different without the shoegaze influence, but people tend to be more comfortable with calling them dream pop as they don't have the apathy of shoegaze.

tl;dr: dream pop and some other genres clashed together as the shoegaze scene which created their own brand of music called shoegaze which in return influenced later dream pop artists alot and has been revivalized throughout the last couple decades

Shoegaze as in guitarists gazing at their shoes. Why? To control the huge amount of pedals they use to create their sound. To me shoegaze is all about highly processed guitar sound made possible by the technological advancement of the 80s - mostly digital reverb and delay units.

No doubt.

I always felt that noise rock/pop and shoegaze go hand in hand.

I think the distinction between shoegaze and noise rock is the droning guitars. Not that it can't be both.

How do you guys feel about Monster Machine- Last Night Something Happened? Finishing the album now, I'd give it a light 6 with the first three tracks being pretty bad, but the rest is p nice
>>
>>48351899
I've never heard of it, downloading now, but what else should I expect?
>>
I feel like a cunt making posts like this (shameless "help me find music" post), but is this not shoegaze?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsFOREd_lmo

I have a hard time finding music quite like this. I feel like it's different than most of what I find when I search shoegaze or follow these threads (like Cocteau Twins or whatever).

Is it more dreampop or something
>>
>>48330457
Why can't it just be both? It began as a scene preceding Brit-Pop, and through developing its own set of genre conventions became something more.
>>
>>48351938

Let's just say it's no Slowdive, even though there are related band members. There are sonically interesting bits here and there, nothing groundbreaking though. The latter half of the album is definitely stronger than the first. It feels like a band that couldn't decide between making dreampop or purer shoegaze on a few tracks.
>>
So aside from /metal/, /hiphop/ and /noise/, we now got /shoegaze/?

I spotted an /emo/ once, too.
>>
>>48351950
Sounds like shoegaze to me. I don't know too many bands like Whirr, but Cocteau Twins lean more towards dream pop than they do towards shoegaze.

Have you heard LSD and the Search for God? They're kind of essential.

First song I looked up is EXACTLY the kind of thing I was looking for. I guess I just need to explore the genre (and subgenres) more, since they're more diverse than I expected. Thanks!
>>
>>48352005
A lot of releases kind of go under /mu/'s radar, so generals are a good place to find obscure/slept on music. It also makes whatever unheard album you're sharing more likely to be heard.
>>
>>48352005
emo generals used to be huge, I think some of the trips that used to start and contribute to them phased out of /mu/
>>
>>48351950
whirr is most definitely shoegaze. There are some decent essentials lists on the /mu/ wiki, and there's this pastebin of links from dream pop december that has a whole lot of shit.

I would suggest listening to The December Sound - Silver Album which is probably one of my favorite shoegaze albums.

>>
>>48352421
I wasn't a fan of Lightfoils. Like Sunny Day in Glasgow's latest album, the vocals were a huge turnoff for me, and the guitars were cranked down to Mazzy Star levels in an album that's supposed to be shoegaze.
>>
>>48356473
Yeah, like
The Goslings
The Angelic Process
Planing for Burial
Cloakroom (maybe)
>>
>>48355617
I heard Wye Oak's latest album (Civilian?) and their work is definitely influenced by shoegaze. I'd say that there are bands that fit the label less than they do and still get it.

Btw the girl is pretty waifu tier. Love the vocals and her guitar work. And the dude can multitask like crazy

>>
>>48325243
I found out about these guys last week and I'm obsessed, I must have listened to every song they got on Youtube and so far I've yet to hear one bad one. WTF is going here? Why aren't these guys selling millions? Why isn't the music industry promoting the f*ck out of them? Everybody i've showed them to so far says the same thing, they're amazing. Yet the music industry continues to promote the f*ck out of retards like Kanye or Disney karaoke frauds like Miley Cyrus or twits like Taylor Swift whose songs belong in commercials for candy or these idiots Imagine Dragons who use every music cliche in the book. Who the hell is running the music industry today? .
>>
>>48357026
I think that album is a little boring by shoegaze standards, not really my fav, it's ok. You're thick if you think that shoegaze is something with mass appeal and has the same audience as a shoegaze artist does. Also, I like Kanye.

Why /mu/? Oshin is a 9/10 shoegaze/dream pop album and Yuck's two LPs are gold
>>

I've seen them talked about a few times, with mixed opinions. What's so good about them? Why should I listen to them?

wrong.

Their second album is complete shit.

Rubber is the best track they put out and one of my favorite shoegaze songs ever.

Speaking of which is there anything else that sounds like that song?

Oshin is just... man, give it a listen
And people say Yuck is not so good, but I personally love them and just looove their second album so much, they have beautiful songs like Rebirth or Out Of Time
But must people stick with Rubber because muh general shoegaze structure even though they have better songs with their music sense
