arturia-keylab-25-813816.jpg

Question for you qts:

I'm an avid guitarist, mediocre at best pianist, and Id like to take the plunge and get babby's firsy synth.
Tactile experience while I'm playing is crazy important to me, but I'm also obsessed with minimizing my gear's footprint (I had my 12 fret parlour modded to have a foldable neck), so I had first decided on a Korg MS2000 rack.
I started entertaining the idea of a VST plugin and midi controller, which led me to aturia's minilab and keylab 25.

My question is: does anyone know if the tactile feel of these units, and their sound quality and sonic diversity is comparable to digital modelling synths like the MS2000?
Because I fuckin love how compact they are, but if they hinder creativity a lot, I'd just rather get the Korg.

Thanks in advance you beauties
>>
>>54520577
VSTs can do anything a hardware synth can do, it isn't the 90s/early 2000s anymore. If space is an issue, don't even bother with the rack.

If you don't know what the hell you're doing with synths, don't get the rack, yet at least.
>>
i'm really trying to grasp how this whole mixing thing works

>>54520577
I kinda agree with the other anon to mess with VSTs + midi before getting a synth. There is not a huge difference since both the MS2000r and any VST are digital. You'll have to record it like you do a guitar and once you record it you're stuck with that sound unless you wanna rerecord the whole thing. It's more option, ease, and benefit with doing your keylab25. The ms2k rack doesn't even have any keys hah so you'll need to get a midi controller for that anyway unless you're getting the keyboard model.

That being said I did the opposite. was a p good guitar player and impulse bought a MS2000 and learned synthesis with it because It was easier to understand than a VST (I had never worked in a daw or software before and at this point didn't even know what a VST was). I still have my MS2000 but am getting kinda bored of it after two years since I use it all the time.

And as far as tactile goes, I'm sure it's fine. it looks like a pretty decent midi controller. always look up reviews on youtube and stuff. hear what these programs/synths can produce

This doesn't sound too bad except for the beepbeepbeebeep that comes in ~:52. I would rethink that, maybe lower it or put it on a reverb bus/give it a reverb. keep goin anon!

Aawesome, thanks for the advice mate. Yeah, looking around it doesn't seem like VSTs are as handicapped as I was being led to believe. The learning curve is just a bit steeper

>>54522832
> the ms2k rack doesn't even have any keys
Yeah, it was my (probably misguided) belief I could get a smaller midi and still save on space, then get a mopho rack to dick around with if I took to synth.

>always look up reviews on youtube and stuff. hear what these programs/synths can produce
This is kind of the sticking point right now, I understand that arturia have been having QC issues with their keys as of late and are shit on the customer service end of it.
But looking at the producer pack, it looks like a good place to start as a noob and may be worth the risk of having to do a controller exchange.

What's the best daw for making your vocals/instruments distorted?
>>
>>54524596
mulab
>>
>>54524596
you can distort vocals/ instruments in any daw, but people reason has a good distortion unit
>>
>>54525394
reason? you mean the Scream 4? love that bitch.

ProTools comes with a bunch of decent stuff including leslie and other amp sims
>>
>>54524207
Bitwig is much like Ableton Live, but the user interface isn't as ugly as Live. Workflow is very good but feature-wise its not up to par with other DAWs (yet) of course.

There is a demo. Try it yourself.
>>
>>54526234
BitWig coulda de-rock'd Shitton but they shat the bed with the pricing. With's daws full featured daws like renoise and reaper, they could'a been the 100$ ableton and been golden but no.

What are my alternatives to getting a mac book? Not gouging on price would be a bonus, but a laptop with enough balls and decent enough build quality is most important.

Most every rec site I've googled seems to be affiliated out the ass or dripping with apple fanboys

Sorry should've been more specific.
Really only wanna run ableton and some plug ins through it.
Do some recording, run some VSTs, etc.

Don't really game or anything, but it'd have to be gig worthy and of good build quality.
Not paying out the ass is always a bonus, but I'd rather go goatsee for steve jobs' ghost than wind up with complete shit.

you need to into computer hardware so you know what is good and what is not

this will always be essential knowledge for the digital producer
>>
>>54530578
I think and i3 and 4gigs of RAM are GOOD ENOUGH

however an i5 and 8gigs of RAM are RECOMMENDED

just a general consensus.
>>
>>54530648
i have i3 and 4gig, i would suggest if he is buying in now to go for at least 8gig ram
>>
>>54530578
I've got a pretty good working knowledge of hardware and by extension, what I would need to run what I need to run.
My real concern are which makers are packaging those essential bits of hardware in fairly priced and well built machines
>>
>>54530959
unless you are willing to spend 2000 dollars on some overpriced alienware or falcon northwest, ignore brand names and focus on what components you are getting for the money.

asus, hp, dell, who cares

What's better for a beginner, making a slow but constant stream of bad songs or dozens of bits and pieces like stems, beats, and melodies?

>>
>>54531626
thinkpads are supposed to be very good. it depends on what model you buy though. check out the /g/ wiki on the /g/ sticky. they have a pretty extent and clear thinkpad buying guide.

/g/ has pretty much become technology consumer general so they should be able to help with that pc to buy. try asking in the stupid questions thread (seriously, there's a thread called that where you can ask questions that dont deserve their own thread)

Whenever I click on a track on Ableton all the VST's that are on that track pop up and I have to click them away to see the screen again. Is there any way that I can stop this? Its annoying to have to close things as soon as I click on something
>>
>>54531145

DEFINITELY option A. Although a better version would be making as many finished songs as possible, doesnt matter if they're bad.

As a beginner it's best to Learn the techical side of it as quickly as possible. Then you can develop a signature sound without technical knowledge or lack thereof to holding you back.

Didn't want to make an entire thread dedicated to this simple inquiry, I hope you folks can answer.

Is there a decent forum strictly dedicated to music production? I'm looking towards the electronic side. The only place I've ever checked out is dubstepforumz and that is a shithole as far as I'm concerned.

Any decent communities out there that take production seriously?

the subreddit for your DAW and probably the other subreddits in the sidebar.

just take a look at it and answer it yourself.
