Realise that cool looking things are cool and there might not really be anything deeper than that, and it's ok. Visual arts also don't have to be super serious, just find something you like and dig deeper into it. The first thing I really got into was eroguro and I still only buy porn related art/"art".

What above poster said about just liking cool looking things is good advice. There's some good art documentaries as well. Notably the series 'This Is Modern Art' even though its 15 years old or so now. I saw another good British series recently which went into detail on 4 artists, Picasso, Dali, Warhol and Matisse and explained their influence on the world at large. Wish I could remember what it was called but its on YouTube

start here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Western_art_movements

RULES
1-check the pic on the articles and the pic of the pages of the artists listed
2-dont care about what is written (on wikipedia) because it may be wrong
3-If you think something is shitty by the samples you see dont forget about the genre, the sample there is just a small one
4-Continue checking more on other places the stuff you liked first, and then check the rest. This is just some seed to make you start from somewhere. Also wikipedia dont have all genres.

Watch him chronologically from Rashomon and out. That should be a great experience.

He adapted masterpieces like The Idiot (with the same name) and Macbeth (to Throne of Blood) successful. I would even say they improved on the original.

A technical genius cinematically as well, and Seven Samurai and Ran are probably the best examples of showcasing this.

Top-tier criteria, mate. No they weren't interesting or enjoyable in any way outside of him being influential to the French New Wave (which already is a ridiculously inferior genre to German Expressionism).

My favorite director (and movie) were more progressive in film-making, and if "progression" and "enjoyability" are the only criteria you can come up with, why did you say that "all of us" had pleb taste when it came to art outside of music.

>>47805710

Sure, you haven't experienced it in the way Rothko intended, but to say that one couldn't be drawn to that type of work without that experience is silly. You're right in some respects, but as far as influences go I get a lot out of Godard's low/no budget productions.
If I'd have included Peter Greenaway, Satoshi Kon, Charlie Kaufman/Spike Jonze, Lars von Trier, Hiroshi Teshigahara, David Lynch, Hirozaku Koreeda, Mamoru Oshii, Guy Maddin and Andrey Tarkovskiy as tied favourites it would have been a big mess of a comment so I chose the Godard alone because I've seen a load more of his stuff than any of the others.
Plus, Vivre Sa Vie is really good and should outweigh the 100s of films he made that are probably terrible.
Plus, you went with Rothko which is a far more embarrassing choice than Godard any day.

>You'll have to read more.
I'm a pretty avid reader, but I really enjoyed the non-linear storytelling, the wry/dark humor, and Heller's POV regarding early 20th century warfare that Catch-22 had to offer. Would you happen to be able to offer any suggestions?

... yes I am.
That's a brilliant piece of music
>>
1. Bob Dylan

2. Highway 61 Revisited

3. Jackson Pollock

4. Lucifer - Pollock or Laocoon group

5. Thomas Pynchon

6. Martin Scorsese or Francis Ford Coppola (stereotypical, I know)

7. Apocalypse Now or Goodfellas

8. Animation? If I absolutely had to choose, probably South Park or the anime series Kaiba.

Because there's almost none of that going on in the animated world due to production costs. The same goes for vidya.

Tough one. The one I spent the most time appreciating the works of is probably Dali, and other favorites include other famous surrealists (Remedios Varo, Ernst, Magritte), Gustave Dore, Pollock.

>favorite visual art piece
Another tough one, I'd say either Dali's "The Metamorphosis of Narcissus" or Ernst's "Pleiades".
