Let's have a Grouper thread. I think she makes the most depressingly beautiful music ever. Any artists similar to her and has anyone tripped on LSD/shrooms while listening to her?
death grips
I haven't done hallucinogens in a long time. Wasn't aware of Grouper at the time, although that would've been cool. I mostly enjoy her in the morning with a coffee these days.
How many of her side projects have you heard?
I've been listening to Raum a lot lately.
>Let's have a Grouper thread.
Yes
She's in my top 5 all-time favourite musicians, maybe even top 3
>I think she makes the most depressingly beautiful music ever.
I don't really find Grouper all that depressing but I agree with her making the most beautiful music ever
>Any artists similar to her
Katie Kim and Marissa Nadler are similar but less drone-y, and Noveller is kinda similar but more drone-y

I think I played some grouper on shrooms a few months ago but it was a chaotic trip and we werent really paying attention to the music. but shes my favourite thing for opis
and I thin kher music is too beautiful to be depressing

>not finding Grouper to be depressing
Woah, are you guys actually serious? Her music is soul-shattering depressing, easily up there with the most depressing artists ever imo. By the way, I don't mean depressing in a negative way at all.
>>53989195
I wouldnt have said it if I didnt mean it
>>53989101
Wow that was cool of you
I already have both of those albums but good share
>>53989195
A major part of depression in music, for me,, is the human element, the personal and honest aspect, which is exactly what Grouper's style avoids
Her dense atmospheres and barely-even-there vocals give her whole aesthetic a sense of distance and ethereality, like you're not as much listening to a human being as some kind of half-realized dream being or spirit from the ether
Obviously the implications of that highlight her own feelings of solitude, which is pretty depressing, but you've got to know about her to know that, it doesn't come directly from the music
What does come directly from the music is a beautifully layered miasma of sounds and textures with no distinct, identifiable emotion being conveyed, least of all sadness
I feel like I've explained this really badly but it's about the best I can do
Obviously I'm excluding Ruins here, because it's such a drastic departure from her usual style. Ruins is depressing.
I really love Grouper. I've been experimenting with Tape Loops recently and just put this out if you'd like to listen to it. It's closer to her Violet Replacement
>>53989849
where do we listen (also what you used for the loop?)
>>53989101
downloading desert fires now, thanks man. You're one of those dudes who contributes towards making /mu/ a productive board.
>>53988934
the only side project by Liz I know is mirroring
thanks for telling us about raum
>>53989010
what opis do you do?
>>53990372
When I found a project between Liz Harris and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, I jumped in my seat.
I think Liz would do wonders with tim hecker and sakamoto
>>53990372
She does a bunch of collabs and stuff
It's worth digging into, some of the splits and collab albums she's done have some of her best tracks on them
>>53989849
how to make tape loops?
>>53990269
yw
>>53990372
theres loads more shes done, as well as mirroring & raum theres
Flash Lights (w/ Jorge Behringer)
Visitor (w/ Ilyas Ahmed)
split w/ Roy Montgomery
split w/ Inca Ore
split w/ Xiu Xiu
and Im probably forgetting something

various, more pod tea than anything else

Thanks for sharing your opinion. This isn't a rebuttal, just my opinion.
>A major part of depression in music, for me,, is the human element, the personal and honest aspect, which is exactly what Grouper's style avoids
I personally think the exact opposite. It's so personal and relatable.
>Obviously I'm excluding Ruins here
Her other works are also really depressing.
Idk, her ambient textures and soundscapes and her method of singing sound very cold, distant and lonely. And some of her lyrics, while cryptic and esoteric at parts, imply or are depressing thoughts.
Check the lyrics out for Disengaged for example. Heck, the one line I could understand in Invisible was "I've become invisible or maybe I always was, just didn't know."

Grouper X Animal Collective when?
Alien Observer, and Man Who Died In His Boat are my favorites. Does anyone know where to find Violet Replacement, Way Their Crept, or s/t in FLAC? I've looked everywhere.
>inb4 what.cd
>>53991623
you're an idiot
>>53991552
>her ambient textures and soundscapes and her method of singing sound very cold, distant and lonely.
That's exactly the point I was trying to make. It's cold and distant, and so it lacks the intimacy that it needs to have a focused emotional impact
I mean it still resonates emotionally but it isn't coherent enough to be labeled as any specific area of emotion. That's what I love about her music
And outside of Ruins, and a few select tracks on other projects, the lyrics don't really factor at all. I mean, Liz has even said in interviews that on most of her projects she doesn't even want the listener to be able to hear what she's saying, I feel like it's supposed to be just an indistinct murmuring, again emotionally resonant but not in a specific direction
>>53991623
I've heard a bunch of stories from /mu/tants about how she opened for AnCo on some tour and everyone just talked over her set like they thought it was soundchecks or whatever
AnCo fans general
>>53991623
she looks so smug in that pic
>>53991645
>inb4 what.cd
thats where I got them. tbh I highly doubt theres any difference between a flac and a v0 it so lofi
>>53991645
I'm finding Violet Replacement FLAC on Soulseek right now
>>53991869
>she opened for AnCo on some tour and everyone just talked over her set
fucking philistines
>>53991924
Are they worth listening to? I've heard Violet Replacement (which I liked a lot), but not her first two albums. Scruffy gave them good ratings.
>>53992312
Right
>>53993892
Way Their Crept is up there with her best imo, Close Cloak is one of my fav Grouper tracks
s/t is easily her worst, still far from being bad though
>>53993892
way their crept is great
s/t is probably the weakest of her pre-Ruins sound its noisy in a harsher way to her later stuff but still worth hearing if youre a fan
here

>>53993958
holy shit, thanks man. i've waited so long to hear this.
what albums by grouper should i listen to after ruins?
>>53994058
dragging a dead deer up a hill
wide
man who died in his boat
cover the windows and the walls
way their crept
>>53994028
np
>>53994058
Ruins is so distant from the rest of her sound that it doesn't really matter, just start as if you've never heard her before
Wide and Dragging a Dead Deer are the best starting albums
>>53994229
>>53994321
Are we not fans of alien observer here?
>>53995432
Easily her best imo
>>53995432
Yeah Alien Observer is a great starting album. Dream Loss is underrated IMO
>>53995478
>>53995484
I was about to say. I think that is her best.
is this OK for the day?
>>53996120
if its sample grouper day listen to either wide or cover the windows and the walls too. or instead of one of dead deer and man die boat
dead deer and the man who died in his boat are very similar, like they could be 2 discs of a double, and they both have slightly more structured songs than wide & ctwatw
>>53996326
OK Currently playing Wide.
