why do people dislike viva la vida?
is it because this album was the equivalent of what AM was in 2013 and American idiot in 2005?
is it just because /mu/ just doesnt like coldplay because the band's name is associated with dads and kids who claim to have alternative taste?
im not a coldplay fan at all but personally i think this is a pretty good album, what are your thoughts /mu/

Friend 1 - Plan B, Eminem, whatever is one TV/Radio - his musical experience is essentially some mainstream rap and whatever is on the radio.

Friend 2 - Area 11, Rise Against, Anime Music... when asking me for recommendations because he's bored of his stuff, I asked him to describe what kinda of music he likes. Response: "I like everything but Gangsta Rap". Ugh.

Friend 3 - Laura Marling, Regina Spektor, general singer-songwriter stuff too. They've recently dabbled in NMH.

Dad: Dunno really, brought up Alan Parsons project to me once
Mom: Van Morrison, Cat Stevens, Willie Nelson, INXS

Brother 2: Drive By Truckers, Trambled by Turtles, Tallest Man on Earth, Bob Dylan, Glenn Branca, the Stooges, old school hip hop, jazz

My mom listens to nothing but Brian McKnight and Mary Mary.
Joy Division is apparently talentless trash, but Mary Mary is god-tier.
>>
>Dad
Tom Petty, The Black Keys, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Eagles...stuff like that. I was actually the one who turned him onto Led Zeppelin when I was younger. He was a Cure fan in his teens and went to a few shows they did. He is trying to get into more modern music and seems open but knows what he likes. I showed him Bon Iver and he wasnt a fan of his voice. He finds UMO trying too hard to be strange

>Mum
Top 40 stuff and 80s stuff like Pat Benatar etc
She likes pop music essentially

>Younger brother
Lots of remixes/chill electronic stuff he finds on Soundcloud, Old high school tier jazz staples, The Black Keys, Ed Sheeran.
As of recent I mostly see him listening to MTV top 40 stuff or going through chill tempo electronic soundcloud playlists etc
He's a great drummer but doesnt listen to much rock music or anything which is fine. I tried showing him Fly Lo's latest album and he liked the jazz elements. Might try show him Clams Casino and stuff.

You need to talk with your dad more.

I bond with my dad over music. Was probably easier as he got back not playing music several years ago so now we talk about playing and bands etc
I think he is having trouble with me going from dad rock fanatic as a young teen to "fuck these old geezers" now

My dad is great to talk music with. He sincerely gives every album/artist I rec him a try. When I told him to listen to NMH, he listened to both ITAOTS and On Avery Island in full. Hasn't loved everything I recommend him, but really likes Boards of Canada.

does she actually listen to them
>>
>Brother
He's adopted my pretentious tendencies without any taste. Usually wants to listen to Run the Jewels while he plays league. Hates anything high-pitched.

>Mom
Sirius radio funk, soul and hip hop stations. Sometimes displays knowledge in prog and/or classical, but mostly from my dad.

>Dad
Prime patrician. Listens to chamber music, opera, classical of all eras (mainly Mahler and Shostakovich). He's also very much into prog, loving artists such as Genesis, King Crimson and Robert Wyatt. Also a fan of art pop such as Bjork and Kate Bush, and occasionally indulges in camp like ABBA or Eurovision. Usually criticizes me for listening to stuff that's too inaccessible for him.

>Best friend
Radio pop (usually Lady Gaga), Joanna Newsom, Janelle Monae, James Blake

>Other good friend
A lot of what I listen to, plus quite a bit of noise and sound collage

>QT friend
Radio indie, LDR, Band of Horses, sometimes really poppy pop punk, and popular Modest Mouse and Weezer songs (Float On, Beverly Hills)

>Other friend
Sufjan, Modest Mouse, alt-J, Son Lux, and recently, of Montreal

New Wave & synth-pop classics. not that big on music. He said Tears for Fears was his favourite band in history, so i got him the Hurting on vinyl for his birthday. He didn't reccognise it, thought it was a new one of theirs, had to tell him that it's their first album. He checked the tracklist on the back and said "oh yeah, Mad World, i know that one"

Singer/songwriter. Just tries to find the least played artists on spotify who play a guitar and sing in a whiny voice. Bit of an "indie-kid". He's open though, he likes a lot of the hip-hop we play when we hang out.

How do you KNOW exactly what your family/friends listen to? I mean if they only ever put on music in the car or something okay, but especially for friends and to a lesser extent siblings who are presumably not with you a lot of the time and often on their computers...have you been through their libraries? Like, if you asked this question to my family about me they'd probably tell you I listen to Linkin Park and Muse and maybe a couple of random prog bands even though I have like 1000 artists in my library because they just remember the stuff I would talk about when I was getting into music way back when.

I dunno, just might be something worth thinking about. Who knows what people would put under your entry if they were writing a list about you, it could come off pretty damning without any context.

Mum - Dusty Springfield, Ron Sexsmith, Leonard Cohen and Bob Marley are the only things I know she really listens to.

Dad - Jazz and Gospel Music (though he's not religious). Also enjoys Tom Waits and blues. We occasionally go to gigs together like Bruce Springsteen, Arcade Fire and Honeyboy Edwards.
