Ray Barretto- Indestructible (1973)

>salsa, son, rumba
>Fania Records is pretty much the “Blue Note” of the salsa world and percussionist Ray Barretto was one of the best-known and most successful of the Fania All-Stars. This is one of his best recordings and all-around one of the best salsa recordings ever. Pure, danceable, fun salsa tunes.

Tonbruket- Nubium Swimtrip (2013)

>progressive rock, fusion
>After the unfortunate death of Esbjorn Svensson and the dissolving of the Esbjorn Svensson Trio, the bassist, Dan Berglund started this group. “Tonbruket” translates to “tone workshop” and the group explores the influences of classic progressive rock with unique instrumentation, influences of world music, and a spirit of improvisation.

David Virelles- Mbókò: Sacred Music for Piano, Two Basses, Drum Set and Biankoméko Abakuá (2014)

>canto Abakuá, sacred Afro-Cuban jazz
>Pianist David Virelles takes influence from his native land of Cuba and translates the traditional music of the Abakuá religion and interprets it with modern jazz sensibilities, producing music that sounds both traditional and sacred, and adventurous and modern. Between the dark harmony of the piano, the two double-basses, and the unique timbre of the Biankoméko drum, this is a very innovative and original record.

Joe Henderson- Multiple (1973)

>fusion, avant-garde, free improvisation
>This album was recorded as Joe Henderson was phasing out of his more free jazz phase, and into his more fusion phase and it captures the best of both worlds. Amazing adventurous solos, over psychedelic, electric grooves, sometimes with almost a spiritual quality to the music.

>Barouque influenced European vocal improvisation
>This Hungarian group does a variety of vocal-led music. This recording takes its inspiration from Baroque and Renaissance compositions and puts a jazz spin on them. The arrangements are great, but it is the unique style of singing that really makes this album interesting.

Holiday: Bob Brookmeyer Plays Piano (2001)

>piano trio jazz
>Brookmeyer was known in the jazz world mostly as a trombonist and arranger, but here he plays piano in a trio setting. Because of his lack of piano “chops” his playing is extremely unique; it’s remarkably colorful and relies very much on simple, but abstract melodies. In some ways it’s reminiscent of Monk.

Opus 5- Progression (2014)

>post-bop
>This is the third release from this makeshift quintet, made up of guys who play together as sidemen on a regular basis. On this record the group plays mostly original material that is very modern, but there is obviously a lot of influence from the tradition of post-bop quintets, especially the classic Miles quintet.

Mauricio Kagel- Exotica (1972)

>avant-garde, experimental, composition
>Argentinean avant-garde composer wrote this highly unique work, for “non-European instruments.” It’s primative, violent, and at times downright creepy. Kagel stated his intention for the piece was to question ‘the dominance of Western music or “culture”’ or ‘go back to the primeval origins of music-making, when singing was still at one with making sound out of simple, everyday objects’. Also included is another of Kagel’s compositions, “Tactil,” one that’s more minimalistic.

Alex Sipiagin- Steppin’ Zone (2001)

>post-bop, hard bop
>This was trumpeter Alex Sipiagin’s first recording on the Criss Cross label and it is very much in the post-bop swing tradition of Miles’ second quintet or Woody Shaw. The tunes are mostly straight-ahead swingers, but the solos are incredibly energetic and aggressive, helped out by the ridiculously hard-swinging drumming of Jeff “Tain” Watts.

It has good days and it has bad days. I still see a few hit 300 posts pretty quickly but when the content is like it is in this thread (almost exclusively jazz), it won't get much attention. Genre variety and the posting of well known albums is essential.

And by well known I mean some of the top albums or artists from the last year or two. Most of what I see in here is the kind of thing I find in OP shops in the 99 cents bin.
